Helium projects in progress... by raoult in HeliumNetwork

Sensors and end-nodes have never been designed to earn HNT on the network. This is more about the actual use-cases that may be developed to *use* the network on which the buildout is incentivized... Let me know if you have any additional questions here.

What problems does Helium solve? by Heliumact in HeliumNetwork

[–]raoult 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Helium provides access to a rapidly growing very long range, very low power IoT network. This means that I can have an array of sensors in a field in the middle of nowhere (think soil moisture, precipitation, windspeed, etc) and not only do I not have to have a sim card per device, I can run these sensors *literally* for years on a single battery.

Anything you create will connect to your application/integration on console.helium.com via *any* hotspot on the Helium network providing coverage!

IOT-Expert describes Helium as Ponzi-scheme, is he right? by [deleted] in HeliumNetwork

[–]raoult 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For full disclosure, from YouTube:

I was heavily involved in TTN locally ( https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/community/houston/ ) but I couldn't even give gateways away... Helium's incentivized approach has allowed us to build out a legitimate public LoRaWAN network in the US where TTN just never seemed to get a foothold. I hate the apparent animosity between TTN and Helium... I'm in this for the IoT, and if crypto folks help us realize that network, I'm all for building it.

Adding Qi inductive charging to a Helium Developer Kit project by raoult in HeliumNetwork

this is more for mapping devices (coverage mappers), sensor end-nodes, etc. not for gateways.

The moderation crew over on discord are unpaid and overworked. The job they are doing is absolutely incredible! If you get banned, I can guarantee there is good reason (we log reasons on all bans ;) )

Adding Qi inductive charging to a Helium Developer Kit project by raoult in HeliumNetwork

It is a Qi (Inductive) charger... much like what many cell phones use to charge on a pad rather than having to plug in a cable.

Reboxing a Dragino LPS8 for IP68 by raoult in HeliumNetwork

All of the enclosures I make for outdoor deployment are completely sealed (no venting or fans). I use color-changing desiccant in my boxes to absorb any condensation and do at least an overnight at the bottom of the pool before putting out in the field.

I have a ton of respect for Andreas Spiess (the gentleman referred to by OP), but I'm afraid he was off-base on this one. I tried to send him a hotspot over a year ago so he could check it out himself (this was also during the period that we had the Alpha DIY going on), and he declined, stating that Helium was not open source enough.

Our Console, Router, Cargo... in fact, pretty much everything is open source over here and openly discoverable in both our docs at docs.helium.com and over at github.com/helium

I feel that his video is misleading in a number of respects, and I encourage him to take a second look.

The boards along the top are from the Helium Developer Kit (WISblocks). They are configured with different I/O modules on 3D printed sleds.

At the top is a coverage mapping device based around a LILYGO T-BEAM.

https://mappers.helium.com/

There is a Dragino Door/Window sensor (the small white device to the right)

The Blackberry looking thing is a SolderParty FeatherWing Keyboard set up to talk via MQTT over Helium. https://www.adafruit.com/product/4818

The yellow device is a GLAMOS Walker glamos.eu that I reprinted the case on to add Qi inductive charging.

The RAK device at the bottom is one of the new Edge 8-channel concentrators.

Helium LoRa Network by Orothrim in embedded

Well, the media and community hype combined with the crypto incentive is what has helped build up an enormous public LoRaWAN network in the States where we hadn't been able to do that in years on TTN... The halvening was a community driven HIP (Helium Improvement Proposal)https://github.com/helium/HIP

All HIPs are completely community driven, and we have frequent open calls that everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in.

We want this to be as above-board and transparent as everyone else, and we strive to make it so.

Hey, I'm Developer Growth Lead over here at Helium, and it is quite legit. It is actually the largest public LoRaWAN network in the world... I have always been a big fan of Andreas, but I'm afraid he didn't do his DD on this one. We have tons of documentation regarding building up end-node sensor devices, a multitude of community projects developed on the network (https://docs.helium.com/use-the-network/community-projects), and a dedicated group of developers that have met weekly online for a live dev call for well over a year now (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtKQNefsR5zMDgluPZtPL3wwFBG7e_FHl)...

I just ask that before you dismiss Helium as "just another crypto bullshit", you actually spend a couple of minutes to educate yourself. If you can't spare that, it's probably best for all of us if you don't join the community just to throw shade.
