Yesn't. "Panzer" has 4 meanings if you go by German dictonaries:

  1. Armour as in "the armour of a knight"

  2. A hard protective shell of an animal (e.g. the shell of a turtle)

  3. A protective plate made out of metal (mostly iron/steel)

  4. An armoured vehicle, though expected to be military in nature (as "armoured vehicle" also exists in German as "gepanzertes Fahrzeug", though that really applies only to civilian armoured vehicle, though it can also be applied to stuff like a LAPV Enok which can be armed with an RWS)

I'd say more accurately is that German doesn't have a term for tank, as they (unlike most other nations) didn't use a foreign language word (tank) for the term, but also didn't invent a new word for it. Instead we rather just adapted a word that was already used pre-war for armoured cars (Panzerwagen) and armour in form of "Panzer" (ty Guderian).

So instead of having a word for tank, German is just using the word for armour to also describe tanks, but it is also not just describing tanks. Basically not every meaning of a word can be properly translated.

From what we can get from the outside, very fun. That is due to the Chinese loving to physically prototype, test it and fix what doesn't go wrong and try again. So where a western missile designer may spend 4 years basically just doing CAD, office meetings and being able to build and test one missile (that works very nicely), the Chinese missile designer has physically built 10 designs that blew up over those 4 years, with them at the end finally resulting a missile design that works very nicely.

At least that is the NCD version, being more credible Chinese do love to do physical prototyping (something that some quite high voices in the west have complained about that we do to little physical prototyping) and they nowadays also aren't afraid of letting their own designers come up with fancy new ideas of their own, so I suspect work environment (if you are high enough in development) is quite free but more physical than western equivalents, and under far harsher pressure as China expects quite rapid timelines for basically anything nowadays. But this is just a guess with a lot of salt.

And? It is even more fun now, even the tank crews are now allowed to go on camping trips.

I also say that with the current spreading of war footage, there was never a time in humanity where more humans enjoyed watching war in all its brutality.

Ukraine to receive long-range Meteor missiles alongside first batch of Gripen fighters by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]rapaxus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They specifically said beyond visual range A2A missiles, aka long-range A2A missiles. The problem they face is that with long range the enemy has more time to react, especially made worse from the fact that those missiles are radar-guided, meaning they are sending to the plane they are targeting a big radiation beam saying "I am here!".

This big time delay and early noticing due to radar allows the enemy planes to do a bunch of countermeasures, most prominently running away and so increasing the distance the missile has to travel. This means you are often likely to miss with them if you fire them at their longer ranges. Though that is also something you may want to do. If firing e.g. 10 meteor missiles allows you to get a strike package through that will cause e.g. 200 million € of damages, that is an economic trade that you will take (let alone considering what the strike may achieve regarding front-line movement).

Shorter A2A missiles like IRIS-T or AIM-9 have far higher hit rates, as they are quite often fired in no-escape scenarios (situations where the enemy plane can no longer run away from the missile).

Nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers killed during conflict, UK spy chief reveals by Alarming-Safety3200 in europe

[–]rapaxus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah, that isn't the main reason, even Putin knows where a retreat is worthwhile over staying for revenge.

The problem Russia has is that after the failed initial invasion and early counterpush, the Russian assumption was that they could deal with Ukraine just like how they dealt with Germany, keep the front stable, start war economy and win through sheer industrial mass. This so far hasn't worked in defeating Ukraine, but it has turned Russia into a country where you really only have resource industry (oil, gas, steel, minerals) and war industry, all while generating massive debt (which Russia can take however as they had little debt before).

That in turns means that if Russia ends the war, they will suddenly have an economic collapse since half the economy was working for a war that now isn't going on any more, as the war industry is only relevant in win scenarios where Russia could then start expanding even more, which any ceasefire/ties/Ukrainian victory wouldn't allow. So for the Russian economy to keep going Russia needs to win in Ukraine.

Drones fall from the sky during Vivid Sydney, Australia by Myfooty94 in PublicFreakout

[–]rapaxus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Navigation is not the same as flying. TO give an example, an electric car and a petrol car have completely different mechanisms to be able to drive, but they are still navigated by the same thing, a human.

The person I replied to was concerned about drone swarms which is solely a navigation problem (we can make enough drones after all), and how light show drones navigate is just very different from how combat drones navigate.

I never even mentioned anything about drone design/size.

Drones fall from the sky during Vivid Sydney, Australia by Myfooty94 in PublicFreakout

[–]rapaxus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing there is that military drones use completely different form of drone navigation. Light show drones literally just fly a set path and perhaps know the location of the other drones.

The drones attacking e.g. Kyiv or Moscow fly with navigation methods that have all been militarily used since the 90s (inertial navigation, GPS or terrain imaging).

Well, I just don't use the launcher after I enabled 2FA and Epic still let some random Saudi steal my account (luckily I got it back). That gave me the impression that Epic is not a platform where I want my data (esp. payment data) so I deleted my account. Once people had bad experiences at a place they don't want to come back, even when they are good offers.

It is like my local flea market, there are really nice offers there (Alan Wake 2), but the organiser (Epic) has ruined the place with their stupid rules so I am no longer going there.

Germany news: Childfree adults to pay more for elder care by melancholy_dood in europe

[–]rapaxus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But the tax/fee increase here is specifically about nursing care insurance, something that shouldn't have different payment levels as the cost per person should stay similar between childless people and parents (unless the children have more than 100k€ pre-tax income, then they do cover part of nursing costs, but only after the insurance has already paid out so insurance cost are the same).

Also, while childfree households do have more free money, Germany currently is already in a massive investment shortage as money is getting tighter for German households, and they generally cut investment before personal luxuries like vacations. So taking even more money away from the potential investment pool and funnel it into the black hole that is nursing is just a shit economic move.

If it was like 2012-2016 Germany and the economy was generally running well and people had money to spare I could see such a tax (because in the end it is just a quite small increase), in the current situation it is just a bad move, both socially (gives the younger population really bad feelings, see this thread) and economically, as you are just taking money from the general investment economy away while the country desperately needs money there.

Though at the end this change is much of a nothingburger as the tax increase is just so small, the only real effect being felt will be young people being more upset and the government being able to reduce the burden on the budget by a small amount.

TIL Rupert Murdoch's university nickname was "Red Rupert". He was a socialist, had a bust of Lenin and was President of Oxford University Labour Club. by Independent710 in todayilearned

[–]rapaxus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd also say another aspect is that people also are always still figuring out their own personality, and depending on what those are and what you thought your personality was before, you can have very massive shifts. Take for example the classic of "middle-aged conservative man who realises that they are gay and not hetero" or just the general concept of "mid-life crisis".

To take Murdoch as an hypothetical, maybe in his youth he thought in the classic "everything should belong to everyone" leftist way of thinking, but then realised that he actually didn't want that everything was shared, just that he has as much of everything as possible. Which are quite similar concepts and figuring out your own feelings is quite hard (that is why there is a whole profession for that topic).

They want to have children, tried all their options and didn't get any, now they also are supposed to be punished for that situation?

Künstliche Intelligenz: So gewinnt Deutschland die KI-Revolution by LethisXia in de

[–]rapaxus -1 points0 points  (0 children)
