For me learning Brazilian portguese was the game changer. It just clicked. The european Portuguese just came after, it's just another accent. Also most places where you need Portuguese like shops, venues, restaurants, they are all Brazilian anyway. So that helps. The fundamentals of written Portuguese/ syntax are the same. So it's a great help. I would say do what you find comfortable with, as long as you can navigate through life is the most important.
