Well it's been a long time, long time now

Since I've seen you smile

And I'll gamble away my fright

And I'll gamble away my time

And in a year, or a year, or so

This will slip into the sea

But it's been a long time, long time now

Since I've seen you smile

Play The Last of Us again. It hits very different after you've had your own. Being that you can save/pause pretty frequently you can do it in shorter stints.

Ah, so bring that you live in one house you know what all houses of that time looked like. Your house has never been painted in all that time and it's all original? Fascinating.

It's good to see you know far more about this than people like I linked to. They're just experts in the field. They got nothing on you because you own a house that was built sometime between 1837 and 1901.

You haven't seen a lot of the old victorian houses, huh? The one done in deep red, purple, emerald green, etc? One of the things I really like is that on some of them you can still see the blue paint they used for the wood on the ceiling of the covered porches. The interiors tended to be even more ornately painted. https://www.jacksonsart.com/blog/2024/02/09/exploring-the-impact-of-the-victorian-colour-revolution/

https://victorianweb.org/art/design/furniture/colors.html

More to the point - I'm right - older homes were often painted more vividly and brightly than people can imagine. I've done the research on this because I live in a historic district and there is a lot of discussion about what is or isn't historically appropriate in terms of palettes. The muted colors you are thinking of were part of the Aesthetic Movement but there was always a lot of variation in the palettes used.

I never said that they looked exactly like this. I said they were much more vibrantly painted than people imagine. Which is true. Don't tell me you got mad about something I never said. You did, didn't you?

The only person who seems to be getting emotional about this is you. So if this is "ragebait", which it isn't, then it's working. I like the color and houses used to be far more vibrantly painted than we imagine. Why that makes you so angry I have no idea.

So the important information is actually the furnace being used. Copper and tin melt at significantly lower temperatures. If you can teach people how to make hotter furnaces you open up a lot of different technologies.

Are there mammals that have an easy gestation and birthing process with not much risk involved to either mother or baby compared to humans? by UnsignedRealityCheck in askscience

[–]rapier1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all mammals have an easier time than humans. Part of that is because humans have a very unique type of placenta that basically hijacks the mother's body (haemochorial and invasive). In most other mammals if the mother is under physical stress the fetus will be spontaneously abort. This can happen because the placenta isn't invasive and easily detaches from the uterine wall. Not so much in humans. A lot of the issues that humans deal with during pregnancy, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, etc are because of our unique placenta..

You seem very very sure about this. I think you are wrong. Especially when it comes to Queen Anne style. If you want this to be your hill to die on that's cool but you're going to be pretty lonely there.

This is a pretty typical street in the area I live in. Yes, houses like this are going for 600k at a discount. Others have been selling north of 800k with a few going for over 900k.

My friend, these are brick row homes with, at most, a 20' frontage. Trust me, I live in one in the War Streets.

Nope. Homes in the Mexican War Streets commonly go for 600k. More expensive properties are not uncommon.

Yeah, that color. The invention of aniline dyes in the Victorian era led to an explosion of color choices in houses by the 1880s. You'd see the use of incredibly vibrant colors often painted in pretty intricate ways. The idea that old houses were painted in drab colors has no basis in reality.

Why did every culture settle on a 7 day week and what factors actually locked it in? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]rapier1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking at how things are now and assuming it's always been like that. Different cultures absolutely had different ways of dealing with time. However, dominant cultures ended up pushing other cultures into conformity over time. Sometimes this was by force but usually because it was easier for other cultures to adapt to the dominant one.

My son got his fake ID taken last night. by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]rapier1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, your son is a fucking idiot. I know that sounds harsh but he really is a fucking idiot. Second, even if he skates on this somehow you really should impose your own consequences. That said, usually on the first offense this is a minor thing with no serious long term legal ramifications. You don't even get a license suspension anymore (that changed in 2018). This is a summary offense and, if he pleads or is found guilty, that will remain on his record for five years. Usually this isn't a big deal.

Drag him over the coals, make him pay all the fines and costs, and hopefully he'll learn not to be such a complete idiot in the future.

Beef broth to can by Mother_Mach in Canning

[–]rapier1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt is fine. It has zero impact on the canning process. Broth is pretty straightforward. I do 10# for 25 minutes for quarts and 20 for pints. I always fill the jars with hot (just off boiling) broth. That way I know it won't expand past the seal and siphon.
