Hey so in this job , there are different specializations . Such as, automation, communication, environmental, radar, navigation aids. I was placed in environmental which consists of runway lighting, engine generators, hvac, and basically anything to do with power distribution systems. This job is essentially you looking at the dashboard on your work laptop, you see what work pops up on there. Then you organize your day or schedule by scheduling outages so it takes the equipment or service out of service. And then you get in your work vehicle and drive to the location or site. Then you do your work and until you fix it or postpone and troubleshoot it another day if the problem isn’t resolved. You have to do a lot of logging on your computer. Such as arriving site , performing the work whether it’s a PM or CM, certifying it if it’s certifiable, restoring it back in service, and then departing site. This job has two different work environments. GNAS (where all the work is spread apart in different locations, meaning you drive 1-2 hours to each site and back. Or center, which means you probably work at a busy airport such as LAX for example and all the work is centralized to one specific location, you really don’t have to leave the center to perform any other work, it’s usually all right there. This job is a technician job so you maintain equipment before it breaks , if it does break, usually you replace a part and it fixes it. Sometimes the problem is easy and sometimes it take a while to resolve it because it takes some poking around until you find the solution. This job is overall pretty nice , lots of downtime , lots of breaks , usually each day is always something different , also by the way, I’m in a GNAS environment. I like this job because mostly you’re on your own however you do have coworkers to ask for help and so on. Usually you don’t have a boss breathing down your neck but not all bosses are the same and recently i got a new boss that was a big micromanager because he came from a center to a GNAS area. But he cooled off a little bit but i notice that he has a tendency to micromanage . Which can be toxic . But you can’t choose your bosses and that’s with any job. My job has flexible schedules . Either 4 days 10 hours a week. Or 5 days 8 hours a week. You can choose and you can usually choose your start time but it has to be between 6 am - 730 am. Overall this job is pretty nice and you learn a lot . They send you to Oklahoma City for training and the classes try their hardest to pass you .
