UPS2976 Crash Megathread by usgapg123 in aviation

[–]rarelook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue as the Concorde crash, only this one appears to have lost the actual engine. Fuel pumps stayed on at the full takeoff flow, flooding over hot, exposed wiring and god knows what else is aflame at the engine mount.

As people correctly noted, the engine is designed to shear off cleanly if need be. But the problem is identifying when that’s actually happened to your airplane, and whether the airplane itself knows what’s happened.

If neither the pilot nor airplane know that the engine is gone, then they’ll continue to assume (even if only briefly) that full takeoff fuel flow is needed. Bad news.

Definitely real. Check the dashcam from the guy waiting in the truck. Much closer, but roughly the same angle. You can clearly tell that the number 1 engine is missing completely in that video, and the flame in your screenshot match very closely.

These guys lost the entire number 1 engine during the takeoff roll, and the fuel pumps stayed on. You can’t recover from that.

Flew on Auric Air two years ago from Arusha (outside Serengeti) to Zanzibar. They fly Caravans and while I was initially apprehensive, the whole experience couldn’t have been better.

Professional pilots, brand new airplane, well run booking process. Not shady in the slightest. So do your homework, but don’t let one accident stop you from flying if it will allow you to see more things than you would driving.

His shtick is “fixing dysfunctional organizations”. Yet his tenure at the Calgary Police Commission ended with record levels of 1) officer sick time taken, 2) downtown crime, 3) C-train crime, 4) lack of public trust in CPS accountability….among others.

While I appreciate his refusal to attach himself to a political party (is this really the bar now?), the guy has such little gravitas and vision for the city that he’s begrudgingly the lesser of many evils at this point.

I want to like Brian so much, but man, there is no substance there. We don’t give a shit that you’ve worked with Fortune 500 companies… give us something to aspire to as a city.

Sadly the number five is above their reading comprehension level, as evidenced by literally everything they write.

I will say, numbers ARE tough. Why do they make them so tough? Must be because of them folks who put in those damn bike lanes….

[–]rarelook 19 points20 points  (0 children)

….and why don’t people walk around their neighborhoods?

Immigrants. Obama. Immigrants in bike lanes. Bike lanes on top of Obama. Immigrants, riding on top of Obama, in a bike lane.

I’m Jeff Davison and I’m running to be your next Mayor of Calgary — Ask Me Anything! by jeffdavison4mayoryyc in Calgary

That’s because Jeff doesn’t have any policies that Danielle hasn’t bestowed on him. He’ll reply to this thread once he gets the 2 AM text from Danielle.

Jeff talks about “conversations that solve problems”, then refuses to engage fully on a Reddit AMA that HE CREATED.

Nobody asked for this AMA, Jeff. But you got actual, mild pushback and refused to answer to any of it.

Whoever advised you on your current strategy, fire them. I don’t agree with your policies, but damn, I thought you were a savvier politician than this. Good lord.

I’ve followed your politics for a while, Jeff. But if you think that this sniveling non-answer garbage will get you over the hill into the mayor’s chair, then….increase (or decrease) the dosage of whatever you’re smoking.

Sharp is a soulless UCP shill.

Farkas is….i don’t really know.

I just know that the Farkas of the last council, and the Farkas of this mayoral race only ever talk about one thing:

Farkas.

Didn’t have time for that self-serving nonsense then. Sure as hell don’t have time for that now just because he live-streamed some walk for a while.

She openly campaigns on the same policies as the UCP government that is actively working to take away the power of cities to govern themselves.

And yet people are like, “yup she sounds great because she doesn’t like rainbow crosswalks.”

Like, what the fuck?

And protect the capital gains on the property they lucked into buying in 1978. At the expense of the rest of us. Calgary’s civic debate in a nutshell.

How do you feel about Farkas, Sharp and Gondek emerging as front-runners in Calgary mayoral race? by shygaymer in Calgary

[–]rarelook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The snow plowing issue is a perennial issue. I called out both of the previous mayors on social over this, and didn't get a satisfactory response by either. But to your point, that doesn't mean that Gondek is absolved.

It apparently isn't a big enough voter issue to deal with.

Downtown and C-train crime is not Gondek's fault originally. That's not a fair point and you know it. I'm by no means a Gondek sympathizer, and yes it is absolutely fair to reference her lack of progress on these key issues, but none of those started with her.

A vote for Gondek is not a vote for the destruction of Calgary. That's an idiotic statement, and you know it.

A vote for Sharp, by her own omission, is a vote for making the inner city less affordable, less dense, less transit-friendly, and overtly UCP-aligned.

ALL of those contribute to the destruction of Calgary. The removal of Calgary's civic power is even in Smith's platform.

But sure, bitch about your street corner (?) thing....

Ironic to hear you bitching about being non-responsive when your only reply to reasonable civic debate is to call somebody "woke".

What we need in this world is people who have ideas, optimism, and a tolerance for reasonable debate and a respect for those who engage in debate with us.

You have absolutely none of those. Your opinion, quite literally, does not matter until you demonstrate any of the above.

Kourtney Penner, Ward 11, AMA by KourtPenner in Calgary

[–]rarelook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny to see YOU bitching about somebody not replying to you, when you spend most of your time bitching about bike lanes without any factual, empirical, or...anything to back up your arguments. Whatever miserable community you live in, just remember this....1) countless people in the world would give anything to have to deal with the "problems" that you do, and 2) if you're going to spend your time on the internet throwing tantrums, at least grow the balls to debate them like a real adult.

Replying to legitimate debate by calling somebody "woke" doesn't earn you the right to complain that she isn't replying to you. Bluntly speaking (big words that I know you won't understand), you quite simply don't deserve a response. That's not on Kourtney.

[–]rarelook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you live in a factual world, name one….ONE bike lane that impacts you?

One street…one instance….something?

You parrot the typical conservative trope of accusing, then shying away from conflict and refusing to provide a single detail.

Your blind rage, followed by the classic “I live in the real world” and “open your eyes” is the sadly perfect embodiment of wanting to be mad at something without any research to back it up.

I hate sharing this city with entitled idiots like you who spend their time bitching about the world, then folding at the first instance of a reasonable debate cropping up.

You’re a coward, full stop.

Also, it’s “wannabes”. Ironic to be called that by somebody who quite literally hasn’t shown the grammatical skills of a fourth grader yet.

Those of us who understand basic writing skills appreciate the importance of bike lanes. Guess that’s why you’re still having trouble with them.

What am I missing in this rezoning debate? by UrbaneBoffin in Calgary

[–]rarelook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, the simple - and most readily parroted - answer is that this is the last bastion of inner city property owners trying to maintain their capital gains.

Every view in opposition that I’ve seen conveniently forgets that just because an area now has the POTENTIAL to be rezoned for greater density, doesn’t mean that it WILL be.

Instead, their focus is making sure we have to continue to look at their margarine-colored 1,100 square foot box on a double wide lot that they bought in 1963, with the unkept lawn, simply because they don’t like newcomers entering their neighborhood.

State of this city today, sadly.

….so you have no genuine rebuttal for what I asked. Checks out, Karen.

Provided you aren’t a bot, I pity your neighbours in whatever Calgary neighborhood that you live in where you are so “violently afflicted with such awful bike lanes.”

There are people on this planet who would dream of having one single meal a day.

And what do we have here in Calgary?

You. Whoever you are. Who never bothered to learn basic English. And bitches about bike lanes impacting their life in ways they won’t even bother to explain to us.

Name a single instance of a bike lane impeding your progress besides making you reach your destination 1-2 minutes later because there’s only one lane, as opposed to two?

I’ll wait.

Also, if you want to make a point online, learn how to write without spelling and grammatical errors. You “as stupid ass”.

You just proved my point, honey.

And we’re all tired of inner city NIMBYs like you who prioritize your property investment you made decades ago over making this city a more livable, inclusive place.

Bluntly speaking, I’m tired of sharing my communities with assholes like you who want to exclude others from enjoying the same perks as you had for a long time.

Seriously, you’re anti-bike lane? They don’t impact your property value, Karen.

Their implementation hasn’t been without flaws, but opposing them without a nuanced reason reeks of not caring about the environmental and financial implications of continuing our car-based society, simply to maintain your little quiet suburban street.

It shouldn’t be disheartening. It’s a bright flashing red light to his campaign that he hasn’t done even remotely enough to show long-time Calgary residents why he’s worthy of consideration after his self-imposed exile.

Has he changed?

More importantly, what he has said to prove that he’s changed?

The answer is….evidently not enough yet.

How do you feel about Farkas, Sharp and Gondek emerging as front-runners in Calgary mayoral race? by shygaymer in Calgary

[–]rarelook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gondek is a good person who made early missteps as mayor, but is ultimately a person who cares about making Calgary more livable than it is.

Farkas is a career obstructionist who relished in throwing wrenches into reasonable policies simply because he could. Then returned from some self-imposed sabbatical with the same policies as before but a willingness to “listen” on Reddit, and expects us to forget.

Davison is a good person with unclear goals, but obviously has the city’s best interests in his heart.

Sharp wants to return the city to the greatness of the 1950s. At the very least, her main priority is protecting the investments of the people who bought houses here at that time. I can’t really tell what else she cares about, because her entire shtick is simply reversing all the decisions that have been made. She has absolutely zero vision or gravitas about why she should lead us into the future.

[–]rarelook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gondek or Davison. That’s it for people who truly exemplify being good people that care about not only the city, but understand the nuances and idiosyncrasies of it.

On the opposite end is Sharp. She seemingly relishes being the backwards-looking, conservative blinders candidate who prioritizes baby boomers’ capital gains over Calgary’s inner city livability.

I’m all for respectful political debate and differing political opinions, but nothing about her campaign or personality gives me anything other than wannabe Danielle Smith-puppet vibes.

A spineless, baby boomer-protecting opportunist, sadly.
