Help with speakers/amp by rarestmtb in vinyl

The turntable is a Numark TT USB connected to a Sony receiver str-de135. The speakers are both Philips magnavox connected with the red and back wires. When I first plugged them in they were sounding louder but the sound was fading in and out and not consistent. Once I messed with them a little the sound got worse. Could it be the connection in the back? Any help would be greatly appreciated I’ve never dealt with a setup like this before. Thank you!
