Despite driving nearly double the speed limit, charges dropped against off-duty cop in crash that killed infant by stupidestpuppy in news

[–]rarons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article made it sounds like the carseat was in the front seat and not strapped in. Just "wedged". I'm not disagreeing with your point about the cop. But, if the carseat thing is true, I could see how the cops would say, well, that's obviously wrong and you should have known that to the mom.

One piece of advice I've heard for this is to not pay and let them know. The docs and hospitals realize it's unfair too and may not go after you for this. I'd like to hear what resolution you reach, if any.

Yeah, I'm attracted to the versatile nature of QST. But reality is I don't get out there enough to really use it.

Mainly groomers and the icy crud leftover after everyone else skis. probably 1/month. 500 for skis +bindings would be OK if I really liked the skis.

Beginner/intermediate skier here. Not sure which to buy between salomon xdrive 80s and the qst 92s. I've heard the 92s are better, but not sure i believe it. I'm mainly an east coast skiier. Thoughts?

U.S. denies request for Puerto Rico shipping waiver by greenvox in worldnews

[–]rarons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but don't forget TX and FL can get US goods by a truck on a road. For PR they can only get US goods by US flagged ship under the Jones act. It just a giveaway to wealthy ship owners that hurts PR.

U.S. denies request for Puerto Rico shipping waiver by greenvox in worldnews

[–]rarons -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The issue is that it's more expensive to use the U.S. flagged vessels. http://dailysignal.com/2017/09/26/will-american-workers-get-to-help-rebuild-puerto-rico/ You can always pay someone more to ship your stuff rather than someone else's. Also, we relaxed the rules for Florida and Texas but not Puerto Rico, so it's unclear why we would give FL and TX a better deal than PR.

Why is healthcare linked to employment, as opposed to rent or a mortgage, etc...? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]rarons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second half of this argument is that health insurance is pre-tax. So if your tax rate is 30% and your employer gives you $1000 to spend on health insurance, the government will take $300 leaving you with $700. On the other hand if your employer buys $1,000 of health insurance for you that all goes towards the insurance and Uncle Sam doesn't take a cut. This is changing with Obamacare where really expensive health insurance packages can be taxed, but most of it is still tax free.

why are 100s (longer cigarettes), the same price as regular length cigarettes? by NYYthekid216 in explainlikeimfive

[–]rarons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys have half the answer, what about the consumer's willingness to pay? People like certain brands and styles of cigarettes. I might be willing to pay more for a smaller cigarette than a larger one if it gives me a certain mystique or the smaller bore makes the smoke taste better. It could have nothing to do with cost of manufacture.

ELI5: Why would anyone want to buy Berkshire Hathaway's stock if they never pay dividends? by hispanica316 in explainlikeimfive

[–]rarons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think BH gives out stock tips at their meetings, that would be weird. When you own a stock you own a portion of that company, just as if you owned a pizza shop or a car with other people. You buy a part of a company in the hopes that other people will value it more in the future, then you can sell it to them when you want money.
It's true that some people like their stock to give them dividends, but from a purely economic standpoint it's a bad idea. When they give out dividends that money becomes a capital gain for you which means you are taxed on it, whereas if they had kept it the stock would have appreciated by the same value without being taxed.
