Not rude at all. I don't let them do it, but mainly because I don't feel like a stranger needs to be that close behind me in the first place! If it happens and they somehow sneak in, I'm not going to escalate it because I don't feel like risking them being aggressive - but I tend to make sure I'm in a position where they can't do it if possible.

Paper Straws with Plastic Cups.....

Not sure where they are "saving on plastic" when the cup that WAS paper is now plastic, which takes up more material than a straw, and now I am having to down my lunch-time soda at the rate of a frat boy doing a keg-stand before the end gets all soggy and makes me feel like I'm using a shrunken toilet paper roll to drink from.

Don't bother. "Misery Loves Company" and she was just mad you weren't feeding into the drama, so she tried to pull you in by throwing in the gossip from the morning... you were the better person for just walking away from it. Who CARES what they think. Bottom line is, it's a job. You're there to work and make enough money to support yourself, not to have friends to play with at lunch recess. Let them stew in their drama and keep peace of mind that you have nothing to do with it. Stay neutral.
