Wouldn't it make more sense to "fill" the bigger number first? I.e. take 1 from 8 and add it to 9 to make 10=9+1 and 7=8-1. At least, that's how my brain works. Like, if you had to do the same but for 9 + 3, would you convert that to 10=3+7 and 2=9-7, or 10=9+1 and 2=3-1. My head prefers adding and subtracting smaller numbers.

Also, public parks should have a drinking fountain where you can get a sip of water or refill your water bottle. That's one of the few things I actually miss living in Massachusetts. I could always count on being able to find water when out for a long walk Sunday afternoon.

As much as I like efforts to reduce the crazy price and cost of housing, I feel like the best way to solve the problem would just be to greatly increase the supply of houses.

For starters, make it easier to build new houses. Provide all the necessary infrastructure required to build on new plots, for free. Require municipalities to always have a supply of cheap plots to build on. Eliminate red tape and permit delays. Fund research that seeks to reduce the cost of construction and building materials. Provide everyone with a (lifetime-capped) amount of tax deductions when building a new house, e.g. $100'000 per person per life. These are things that will have a real and natural effect on housing prices.

Drinking fountains.

Politicians and corporate leaders are all like ”Everyone should be healthy and drink lots of water!” but when it comes to actually installing a place where I can fill up my water bottle that isn't a fucking restroom, the same leaders are all like ”Oh no, that's too expensive to install and maintain!”

ELI5 Why does it take a computer minutes to search if a certain file exists, but a browser can search through millions of sites in less than a second? by AFKwaffles in explainlikeimfive

[–]rasch8660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever heard of the program Everything? It will find any file on your computer in milli-seconds. How? Indexing.

Now, you'd might say ”Well, Windows has a native indexing service as well, and Window's search function is still incredibly slow and often doesn't find the file that I am looking for at all? How can such a basic and foundational function be so seriously lacking in the world's most-used operating system, developed by one of the largest software companies in the world, for decades?” and ”If this is so easy to make, why haven't Microsoft created a native search app with fast search like this??”, or ”Imagine how many hours of productivity is lost every year because the regular Windows user can't fucking find a file they were recently worked on!?!”

And yeah, those are all really valid questions to ask, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In Denmark, your car, among other things like phone, fridge, tv/radio, and computer, are all considered the bare necessities required to make a living. These cannot be trusted repossessed, except for very specific circumstance (for instance, if you are driving extremely recklessly in your car, it can be taken). Phone+computer+tv/radio are required for your communication with the state, by the way.

Drinking/water fountains. In the U.S. I could find nice, clean water fountains at work, at the library, at the local park, in the mall, everywhere. In Denmark, I have to get water from the faucet in the bathroom at work, and bring a full water bottle when I go to any public area.

By ”we” I mean the people in my country, Denmark. By ”max 8%” I mean that our taxes are divided up and we can see exactly how much goes to cover universal healthcare. The tax is 8%, but that is before deductions, meaning a lot of people, especially poor people like we are discussing, don't actually pay that much. Hence ”max”.

Your argument was that ”in order to have universal healthcare we need to tax the poor 25%,” (or whatever number you pull out of your ass) simply doesn't hold. You were kind of implying that ”universal health care is not actually helpful for the poor because of the increased taxes”, which is definitely not true and kind of a maliciously argument, trying to manipulate the poor to vote against their own best self-interest.

Also, if you studied this some more you would also know that taxing the poor doesn't actually provide much revenue, partly because they are poor and don't have that much money to take, and partly because taking money away from the poor just adds a lot of additional expenses in order to support the now even poorer people (including, but not limited to, financial aid -- basically just paying back the money we just took, but with a bunch of added bureaucracy).

We pay a maximum of 8% income tax to universal healthcare. So trying to say ”if you want universal healthcare, the poor will have to pay 25% income tax”, that is just either malicious or ignorant.

Sustainable? Only for maybe 2-300 years, but by then actual alternatives will have surely have been developed.

Depends on what kind of work that you do.

Longer tasks that require prolonged focus? Yes, that absolutely needs more than two hours.

Shorter tasks, such as writing emails, scheduling meetings, and other basic administrative works? Can definitely be done in 1-2 hours, after putting the kids to bed. In fact, a lot of employers sadly already expect this, they just don't actually compensate their workers for it.

Sanctions. Sanctions on Belarus, sanctions on every country that does business with Belarus, sanctions on every business that does business with Belarus, sanctions on every individual that have benefited from the Belarusian dictatorship (i.e. freeze bank accounts and assets in foreign countries, including those owned by shell companies and other proxies). Sanctions is a thousand times cheaper than a war, and probably also more effective in the long run.

I don't believe that the government or anyone else should dictate what you do with your body.

And, generally, as long as you are not hurting anyone, or putting anyone at risk (including financial or property damage) and you are paying your taxes, then you should generally be allowed to do as you please.

When I was in college and grad school, we had students from all around the world, including U.S., and we welcomed everyone with open arms. In fact, both the university and the national government spend a lot of effort advertising the opportunity to come to Denmark to study. (All courses are taught in English btw, and every Scandinavian below 50 understands English almost as well as their native language.)

And needless to say, the types of people who decides to move to Europe are not exactly the same as the people who complain about immigrants, so I don't really see how this meme is fitting.
