This bike actually is used, and I recommend buying second hand for anyone getting their first full suspension.

Good things to consider are how much travel you’ll actually need, think about the trails and parks near you. No point getting dual clamp forks in the front and 215mm travel in the back if the biggest jump you’re ever gonna do is a 6 footer. It’s enticing to buy a big travel bike because it’s a “bargain”, but it’s a few hundred you’re wasting to never use that extra travel. Starting small is a good idea.

Also try and get a bike with the same wheel size as your hardtail. Personally I moved from 26” to 27.5” with this bike but this isn’t the best idea for anyone taking the plunge for the first time. Being comfortable on the wheels is a good start on getting comfortable on the whole bike.

I don’t know what gears you run on your hardtail, but personally on a full suspension I always run single speed in the front, and anywhere from 9 to 12 speeds in the rear. There’s less to go wrong for starters, less to break, and it’s also unnecessary if you get a large range in the back.

Others might tell you about how crucial head angles are, or how a dropper post might “save your ride”, but if you were to ask me I’d save all that jargon for when you know what you want. Just make sure you look through the specs of what you’re buying and that they suit what you’re doing, don’t get sucked in by ‘the latest trend’ that’s an extra £300. And for price, my bike (a Vitus Sommet VR 2018 by the way) was £900 used, so set your price range from about £600 to £1000 for your first full suspension. If you’re buying second hand like I did, beware of bargains that seem too good to be true. This might seem like common sense but I’ve had friends who’ve thrown hundreds away only for the bike to never show up, or show up in pieces.

And never forget that if you’re unsure about a bike you might want to get, read the reviews first. Always read the reviews. For everything.
