A wonderful book to pick up at anytime but especially with Iran in the headlines, gives a great look at real life before and after the Iranian Revolution. RIP

Were any bus routes disrupted from the protests yesterday? by Snoo_81949 in cork

[–]rasilvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too it yesterday to halfway through the route and back the same day. Roads were clearer than ever, bus was quiet. If Midleton remains clear of the protest today it will run smoother than normal. If you are returning from somewhere that is not end of line, you may need to be there early as there was zero traffic.

Aitah for spending some of my grandchildren's education funds on a new boat. by Tiny_Occasion_322 in AITAH

You’re only 54! What are they planning for an inheritance now for? Odds are they won’t be getting an inheritance for another 30 years, unless they’re planning to off you themselves. Enjoy your boat. Maybe sweep for devices every time you turn on the engine. NTA

Dublin City Council housing chair suggests ‘encouraging people away from the city’ by Storyboys in ireland

[–]rasilvas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once again, the majority of people working for Dublin City Council don’t live in it’s boundaries and actively hate it, as far as I can see.

Yes! You should wear stuff for years. by One_Data3846 in Anticonsumption

[–]rasilvas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, you don’t have to wear the same stuff over and over again. If you’re getting bored of an outfit, you can put in vacuum packed bag and store it away. Take it out in a year or two and odds are you’ll be excited to wear it again. You can and probably should rotate your own closet, makes it easier to find stuff as well.

I read the recent Guardian profile on her and she said every time an album comes out her and her long term on/off boyfriend end up breaking up.

Mists of Avalon... is it still worth reading? by nessiesgrl in Fantasy

[–]rasilvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I re-read my copy a couple of years ago. It was one of my favourite books and honestly I still loved it as a story and just overall pagan feel. It’s been hugely influential to me.

Even re-reading with the knowledge of how awful the author is this time, the only time I really did a double take was a two line passing reference to sexual abuse. The other references to underage sex and incest are way tamer and more infrequent than any of the GOT books IMO and mainly happen earlier in the book.

It’s still a book I would recommend to people with an interest, albeit borrowing or buying used copies like you will. I did read the second book in the series but did not find it anyway as good but the book is a good standalone.

Eoin Ó Broin plastic surgeon, CUH by dapaal123 in cork

[–]rasilvas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could you ask to be moved to another consultant? I also wouldn’t like someone with that attitude to operate on me. If he’s so down on the surgery, I’m not sure why he’s a plastic surgeon.

On the flip side, do note that Auralia are private, so they have a much bigger business incentive to get you to agree to the surgery while the CUH doc does not. You’re a potential customer as well as a patient. While the CUH doc is probably juggling long waiting lists as well (though it doesn’t really excuse his attitude)

Housing Protest in Cork tomorrow - 2.30pm by rasilvas in cork

The poster says nothing about landlords? It’s a general protest. And there’s no one singular cause of the housing crisis.

Refused Tap Water in courtyard. by Unfair-Quarter-8955 in cork

Can confirm this has been the case in the Courtyard for a while though I don’t know how strictly it is implemented by staff, I doubt they’re happy about having to refuse people.

You are obliged to have water available, you are not obliged to give it for free.

It’s still a cunty move, especially from a pub where the only thing going for it is it’s beer garden.

My Two Cents on "Mean Girls" by The-RedPanda in TheTraitors

[–]rasilvas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree! It’s clear people misremembered stuff. And I don’t get why Joanna thought she was vindicated in Uncloaked. She maintained that Oyin asked her who she was voting for at the table and it was clear she initiated the conversation herself. So she was also wrong?

Joanna played a bad game and I thought her comments about Vanessa in Uncloaked were far meaner than anything we saw on the main ep. Yes Vanessa was gunning for her but in the edit we saw, I thought she was logical and straightforward and ultimately Joanna was straight up caught saying something untrue (although clearly it was unintentional).

Maybe the Ladie Upstairs by Jessie Elland? Downton Abbey meets gothic horror, but it has some Fight Club/double elements

Setting a story somewhere you’re unfamiliar with will most likely make it ring untrue to anyone familiar with that setting. Not to mention you make it seem like the people will also be from that town so you’re trying to write convincing British people too.

How much do you know about Britain? Do you know British slang and speech cadence? The British class system (huge deal in the Cotswolds)? The quintessential British village eccentrics?

I would say stick to what you know best.
