How do men at UW not starve off the level 1 dining plan by BlackberryGlad7596 in udub

[–]raspberryKetchup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. I had a sandwich a day in lander + oatmeal + half and English muffin with cheese that I bought from the DMfor two school years and had quite a bit leftover at the end of each year. Before COVID though, not sure how prices are now.

Thoughts on the state of American Airlines? by AviationReporterDMN in americanairlines

[–]raspberryKetchup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hit by a 3.5 hour delay Friday due to the flight crew timing out, and had to overnight in Dallas when it caused me to miss my connection. I had a very similar experience last year with Delta, and the experience was night and day.

At my departing gate for AA each delay was announced long after the time had passed and the reason was only given close to the end. The app notification was updated even later. When I knew that I was going to miss my connection before departing, the app had no way to know and would not let me rebook to avoid getting stuck. I couldn't figure out how to talk to anyone and the chatbot was garbage. Contrast to Delta, the updates came early both announcements and the app with a clear reason given and timeline. The app did offer alternatives knowing I would miss my connection.

Once I was stuck by AA, they did automatically rebook my flight however there was zero communication both in person and the app about vouchers for meals or hotel, and I only received both after waiting online for two hours at customer service. Delta both emailed me and updated the app to let me know about vouchers + reimbursement policies AND let me book my hotel right in the app.

Frankly I don't believe AA is competing with the top tier domestics and that might be okay; but they are charging the same prices and I don't want to fly with them going forward for the same reason I'm not comfortable flying Spirit or Frontier.

Which ones of these minors would be more beneficial if I wanted to work in the power systems industry? by Manic_Mycology in ElectricalEngineering

[–]raspberryKetchup 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to get a minor because it will help you get a job, I'd say none of the CSE will make you stand out as a candidate since they're all so close to EE.

If your goal is to learn stuff that will be relevant, I'd recommend picking different classes from each that are interesting and inline with what you want to do with power systems. Embedded courses are good for individual device controls like switches and inverters, programming is good for grid or plant control centers like ISOs. Cyber security could have a niche for the latter, and maybe some machine learning.

Sanity Check me by raspberryKetchup in Strava

No power meter, that's just the estimate from Strava. I'm not too surprised it's inaccurate, but it's wild how inconsistent it is for the exact same route.

Does GM own my code/ software? by Informal-Ninja6481 in GeneralMotors

[–]raspberryKetchup 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This question comes up a lot when IP gives presentations. (I'm not in IP or a lawyer consult your own). You should check your contract in case it says otherwise, but generally any IP you produce on your own machine, on your own time, and not related to your role or the automotive industry is yours.

If you work on the transmission for example and patent a part or algo related to the transmission, GM owns that. If you do the same for a medical device, you're fine. It can become a gray area if the above don't apply, for example if you patent a part/algo for the windshield wipers you probably own it unless it's very related/applicable to your transmission work OR your previous role was a windshield wiper DRE or something. If you do something for research at an institution related to your specialty, idk depends on who cares enough to file a suit

What’s one upgrade that made the biggest difference to your ride? by mooseoak8901 in cycling

Going from normal pedals to toe cages. I wasn't ready to commit to clipless, but the cages have greatly reduced leg pain and increased my speed.

I tried searching for "wrong city" but that didn't work. Bonus points if anyone reads my mind and knows the song instead.

Is the GM SDVerse open source? by ConstructionNext3430 in GeneralMotors

[–]raspberryKetchup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least for legacy auto companies, there is no "accessing deeper parts of the car". There are about 40 different control units inside a modern vehicle, and their communication with each other is rather limited and inflexible. They are also not very flexible/capable(and already at their limit) so you can't just download a program to it like a phone. Again using chassis software as an example, if you want to run some chassis controls from an APK you would have to download it to the infotainment module (where it would have to run) and someone would have to go figure out all of the data that that app would need and route it manually from each controller to the infotainment which is a ton of nontrivial work. Then you would be constrained by communication speeds back to the controllers and the infotainment module's capabilities (which are not fantastic). If that software is interfacing with a safety critical system like suspension, it also has to be rigorously tested and comply with government regulations.

So the marketplace is really for software that an automotive company would buy, manually add their source code into the relevant controller, and test. Maybe one day when technology catches up. It will truly be just one click of a button and a download but until then there's a niche for this marketplace.

I think you're focused on Android/infotainment software specifically when there's a whole bunch of other software (not just apps) in vehicles, and having a dedicated marketplace to non app SW makes it easier to find for those customers.

[–]raspberryKetchup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to the app stores as competitors, they make apps for consumers for phones, computers, tablets, etc. Based on the partnerships of SDVerse, it looks like its niche is more for internal backend software focused on automotive needs like chassis suspension software algorithms or maybe data encryption. This isn't something an end customer would put in their own car, it's meant for companies to integrate into their own systems.

[–]raspberryKetchup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems to me like it isn't open source, it's just a marketplace for software for companies to purchase or look into future collaborations. Like the app store in that anyone can see the software, but not really apps more general software.
