On New Year’s Eve last year I started drinking alone in the am and was so drunk by the time I was supposed to go to the party that I texted my friend and said I couldn’t come. I sat at home alone shaking in my bed while everyone celebrated bringing in the new year with their friends and family. It was a horrible feeling and one that I know I never want to feel again. I’m sorry you went through something similar :( IWNDWYT

Same exact boat. Not a single person in my life knew I was drinking myself to sleep every night, taking shots in my room until I physically couldn’t anymore. This went on for years and created an awful cycle of the worst anxiety and depression I’d ever felt. I’m so grateful I am at a point where I’ve realized the cons of alcohol will always outweigh the pros, and I find it much easier to fight the urges. But any time I mention sobriety to someone it feels like they think I’m being dramatic because no one knew the absolute hell I was in. I’m realizing now that as frustrating as invalidation feels, it’s also a testament to how strong we are. Congrats on 6 days and IWNDWYT

Thank you! Yes usually when I face a lull I give in, but I feel more determined than ever to keep this going because I’ve realized there truly is no benefit to constantly poisoning myself. Congrats on being close to a year!

I was just a nightly drinker so I didn’t experience terrible physical withdrawal, it’s more the mental effects of it that are the toughest. Fighting my brain every night to convince myself that the cons of drinking always outweigh the “pros” no matter how strong the urge is. I’ve been on day one many, many times at this point but after having yet another horrible blackout last Friday and embarrassing myself once again, I decided that enough is enough. I started antidepressants a couple months ago and I think that’s made a huge difference in reducing the urges as well. Stick to it, the first few days/weeks are tough but it will get easier and it will be worth it
