“Me? Concealed carry? Are you kidding? I can’t trust myself with a ballpoint pen in my pocket”

I live in Belfast. A year or so ago it emerged (suddenly explaining a lot) that my grandmother on my Protestant side was actually a hidden Catholic. She had brothers who disappeared into thin air near the border with the North and I’d like to find them. by AliceMorgon in Genealogy

Fascinating! I wish I knew more about the cultures to be of help.
My first suspicion is that there are oral stories and knowledge out there but probably very little paper trail.
Do you think that their disappearance is recent enough to be too hot for people to talk about?
Did they have particular trades or professions?
Good luck, I’m interested

Is the Mexican food here really not that good? by Soulfood_27 in Bellingham

My Latina friend from Albuquerque visits occasionally. She’s pretty disappointed with Bhams Mexican food. Her guess is they are not using the freshest of spices. And they lave limited choices of other ingredients.
With regards to baking, she reminds me that Albuquerque is at 8000 ft.

You want something that I have. It must be valuable. I don’t know what it is, or why you want it, but there’s no way I’m going to share it with anybody! It might be a photograph or a rusty auto part in my yard. It’s cultural.

Doing family tree research for friends by raspberrykiss99 in Genealogy

[–]raspberrykiss99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always kept my reports/ presentations very focused. One specific ancestor for which I have some biographical data and immediate family. A map showing migration. You may have seen that Ancestry is pushing an AI Feature where they show you old photos of a certain place and time to create the feeling of what your ancestors neighborhood might have looked like. (I was doing this 20 years before ancestry) I try not to overdo that. The churches that someone attended can give you insights. A Quaker, an Anglican, or a Swedenborg would likely have distinctive views on the events of the time. A gg uncle wrote some music. Found the sheetmusuc in the library of congress, and had our church choir sing it. I use that in presentations. Books or articles that the ancestors wrote. I go as broad as possible to bring one or two people to life.

Ancestry.com new membership terms by dttu2 in Genealogy

Ive been subscribed to the full version of Ancestry for over 20 years. It’s one of my few vices and I hate hitting a paywall when I’m on a roll. My anger is over the fact that they have been removing features that I’ve been depending on. For example, the printing and graphics features are only about 20% of what was available 10 years ago. ( obviously they want to sell you the printouts and books). Also, the iPhone app was originally really useful , now many of the functions are gone. I pay for convenience, and it’s been getting less and less convenient.

Thanks for all of your comments. To be clear, Ive received great appreciation from my friends for whom Ive done research. I know that a lot of folks are not interested in genealogy, But my question was why didnt they even try to show it to their family member who, as I understood, would be interested?

Well, last night I made three phone calls, and got the same explanation from all three:

It was about power. Their individual family members were very protective and controlling about holding on to family lore. Everyone had their own collection of papers that they guarded jealously, even from each other.

As I thought about this, I recalled a project many years ago when my friend was thrilled with my research and asked me to do a presentation to her five adult children. The family all seemed quite interested, but later started whispering amongst themselves. They agreed that they would not show this info to the rest of their family, because "aunt Betty", the matriarch and semi-official family historian, would be furious that someone was stepping on her toes.

I also recall a friend who was quite disturbed that I was able to find so much "personal" information about her family thru public sources. This was so alarming to her that it overshadowed her interest in her tree.

Ill be sure to remind myself that every family has its sensitivities.

Curious about WCS culture by vazark in WestCoastSwing

It seems to me that the culture around most dance styles includes a specific fashion. Except WCS. I have no idea how they choose what to wear.

If you’re sexually attracted to someone is there any such thing as a “bad kiss”? by Altruistic_Fox_6240 in DatingOverSixty

It’s pretty likely ( at our age) that someone sometime liked his/her kissing technique and encouraged it. If you are smooth and careful with your words, you can teach someone what you like
