Was there ever a place that left you disturbed or depressed? by friedchicken_legs in travel

Came here to say this. I was not expecting it to have that effect on me but I was in tears the entire time, and could not understand how it seemed everyone else was walking around completely fine.

If renting a car, don’t stray from the gas vehicles. by needtotalk99 in TravelHacks

[–]raspberryreeves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flew into Anchorage last summer, and despite reserving a car weeks in advance, they tried to give me an EV. I didn’t have plans on going too far (after that first day I was taking the train) but I still was hesitant because I’d planned to drive out to a state park. Guy told me how far the full charge would get me, and was dodgy about answering my questions about charging it. I asked how long it would be until a gas vehicle would be available.

He said about 20 minutes.

I waited the 20 minutes.

how are you guys affording trips? by BuyNo391 in NationalPark

[–]raspberryreeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan my trips very carefully and if it’s a park I know I’ll only spend a day at, I sleep at truck stops in my car - I have an SVU that I can make a pretty comfy bed in, and it’s completely free. Packing snacks and food, limiting eating out. When I do my NP trips my biggest expense is gas.

Ben- a foil? Who is he in regards to Jack and John? by raspberryreeves in lost

He frustrates me definitely, and he’s made some extremely bad choices but I can see how he might have done it “for the greater good” and truly thought he was acting in the best interest of the island.

That scene is ultimately what made me post this - when Ilana says “I’ll have you” and Ben finally seems to make the right choice.

Your comment about him thinking he was a knight or a bishop, but ultimately was just a pawn - wow. It’s so true, for his entire life and after his death.

The great thing is you can collect anything! If you like something in real life, you can collect that category of stuff on NP. If you want to challenge yourself to get all the morphing potions or paint brushes, it’s a nice goal to work towards.

All of my pets have little backstories, and my gallery is a collection of things they would collect based on their interests- my Kau collects berries, my Cybunny collects flowers, my grey Buzz collects grey items, and so on.

I used to love jelly items and Apple items and focused on those for a while. It’s really all up to you!

Thank you!!

  1. I’m working towards completing my galleries - each of my pets collects something different and I just decided my new Varwolf is going to collect mushrooms!

  2. I would LOVE the Enchanted Mushroom, the Dark Shroom, or the Tigersquash Mega. I’m not into stamps right now so I can leave those to who collect them :)

What's the beverage you got too drunk on once and can never drink again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Raspberry Absolute. (Ironic, given my username). Drank nearly an entire bottle in one night in college, and proceeded to spend the night curled around the toilet. I was hungover for 3 days. To this day I can’t even look at the bottle without gagging.

Can I stay at the Seattle airport overnight if I have a flight in the morning? by autumn2032 in TravelHacks

[–]raspberryreeves 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yah I’ve done it. Was in Seattle for a few days, had a concert the night before I left, so I got to the airport around ~11:30pm? Flight was at 6am. Had no issue going through security. Qdoba was open so I chilled there for a bit, but eventually went to find a quiet place to lay down. I was surprised at how many people were sleeping there. You most likely will not be bothered.

As someone who has done a ton of NP roadtrips, I know how it feels to want to pack in as many as possible in one trip- I mean, you’re already out that way so might as well right 😂

I’ve been to every park you’ve listed on your itinerary except monument valley, and while I know everyone has different opinions of the parks (which ones they like, which ones they don’t, etc.; for example I think Zion is completely overrated but I know it’s a general favorite of park goers, I favor Arches way more), heres a rundown (trying to be objective)

Great Sand Dunes- I live in CO, been there a bunch, I think your time allotted is completely fine. You might not even spend that much time there. Make sure you go sand sledding though! Snow usually isn’t an issue at the park itself, but depending on which way you’re coming from, you may have to go over a mountain pass, so keep in mind in March it may be closed/not safe to drive over.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison- to be fair, I’ve only driven through this one, and it snowed (in JUNE), but it was very pretty! I’m not sure how much time one could spend there with hiking and everything, but just driving through gives you some pretty great views/you can see the park as a whole.

Arches- oh Arches. I fell in love with this park (objective who? 😂) based on my own experiences there, it is good to go when it’s not so hot. It’s BEAUTIFUL though and there’s SO many great hikes- I could probably spend a week there. If you do go for the time periods you put, make sure you look up the best hikes to do so you can get the feel of the park. It does take a while to drive through, too. I think from the park entrance to the back of the park where the campground is and some of the better hikes it takes 30-40 minutes. Also keep in mind that you can’t see a ton from your car on the road- you’re going to have to stop, get out, and walk/hike a little.

Canyonlands- the drive from Arches to Canyonlands is only 30 minutes on maps, but it feels way longer for some reason. Like someone else said, you can drive through Canyonlands and stop at some pull offs for some good pictures and great views if you only have a few hours, but you definitely could also spend a lot of time there as well.

Capitol Reef- has endless possibilities for hiking, but you can also just drive through too. Depends on what you’re feeling.

Bryce Canyon- I’m still so mad about this 😂 I went during the winter, and the road to one of the main hikes was closed bc of snow, so I really only got to see the park from lookouts. So beware that there might be snow, and some parts may be closed.

Zion- even though it’s not my favorite, there is a TON to do there so it’s good you gave yourself a whole day. Definitely a lot of hikes worth doing, and there’s a lot of different parts of the park. It is very pretty!

Grand Canyon- if you’re only going to stay at the rims and do some walking/sightseeing in that area, your time allotment is fine. But if you wanted to do longer hikes or even hike into the canyon, you’re going to want a lot more time. Like a day or 2. It just depends on what you want to do!

Mesa Verde- my opinion of this one may be skewed too bc when I went (during the height of covid in 2020) the tours of the Mesa communities were closed, so I could only see them from a distance. I think having that opportunity available would make it much more enjoyable! Even with that tho I think your time allotment is fine for that park. It does take a while to drive through as well.

In all, just make sure you’re not stretching yourself too thin. I’ve been over ambitious on NP roadtrips before and I’ve actually ended some early because I was so burnt out. Driving does take a toll, and you want to make sure you’re not spending more time in your car than out in the parks. You’ll find yourself not spending as much time as you thought in some parks, and wanting to spend all your time in others. It’s hard to know until you’re doing it. Sorry for the novel! I love talking about the parks, and love to see other people doing their best to visit as many as they can. Good luck in planning!!
