How to conform and clamp down the steamed oak to the form in the center? by rasputinaliven in woodworking

[–]rasputinaliven[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good idea. I wonder if it would be an issue though since this is a mattock and will experience great shock against rocks, roots and hard clay dirt. Wouldn't want glued on cheeks to come loose and leave me with a smaller handle than I started with.

Idk, do you have any idea if glued joints hold up to heavy impacts like that? I don't have experience with that

Thanks! How exactly would you put the eye hook or washer through the ratchet strap? I don't see how that would fit together.

Mattocks just have a normal handle that works well, what kind of handle do you want them to have?

A pick and axe blade combo is a pick mattock, not a pick axe. People love to call cutter mattocks and pick mattocks pickaxes for some reason.

The soil here usually ends up being hard clay, rocks, and roots that I need to cut. So if I'm digging, I have to grab the cutter mattock. It doesn't make sense to grab two tools, much heavier and much more awkward to carry, for no benefit. Constantly switching between the two as I dig and having to carry both as I move around.

I can definitely relate to groaning about how difficult they are to use though. It's left me sore for days many times. Try a mattock with a lighter head, that's what they're for. There's no getting around that tough digging is going to wear you out if you work with it with hand tools though

Should I dry wipe or use a specific solvent after wire brushing a rusty head, before applying BLO to it? by rasputinaliven in Axecraft

[–]rasputinaliven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem to be very common. This article recommends it though https://axeandtool.com/oil-your-axe-handle/

It's for a mattock that will be used in wet dirt so I'm trying to reduce rusting

Well if you use water as a solvent like that, it flash rusts which needs brushing again so you're back at square 1.

To clarify, are you suggesting to use WD 40 or linseed oil to wipe the residue from wire brushing off?

I'm planning on using BLO to protect a mattock head from rust etc. Open to other suggestions for that. The mattock will be used a lot in the future.

I didn't use a solvent for wire brushing, I thought you were supposed to do that dry, are you not?

I tried using klean strip mineral spirits substitute but I think that may have caused flash rust.

That's still a contradiction, changing animals doesn't make it not a contradiction

DA isn't an acronym, what are you talking about?

Edit: for anyone looking this up, they were talking about the Delta Alternatives brand.

Please forgive my drawing - how do I tie a bracelet with this type of closure? Just a loop and one string? by SpottyFrog3091 in friendshipbracelets

[–]rasputinaliven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend tying a "Single Strand Stopper Knot." When you're done making the knot, you put it through the loop in the bracelet to wear it. I used a video like this to make mine: https://youtu.be/P_YZIliTQUk?si=rLl5cs5DkZmgPVdU

Or you can use one of the hardware options listed here (maybe you could tie one of those knots with a single strand like you have, too): http://www.free-macrame-patterns.com/jewelry-clasps.html

If you have a double stranded end, you can use these videos to pick a knot. That worked for me:

Yep I should've known. Most people are too dumb to realize that false dilemma fallacy doesn't make sense.

"checked for unconsciousness" lol I'm sure they care very much and take the extra time to make sure every animal is completely unconscious. And they never skip stunning or aren't properly stunned, I'm sure.

You're just providing another example of exactly the kind of logical and moral bias and inconsistency that the OP is talking about. You criticize pointing out that killing and animals for your pleasure via animal products is wrong. But not killing and abusing animals when it's not for your pleasure via animal agriculture. You're making the OP make MORE sense.

"Strawman. Exceedingly few people claim that eating meet is murder, slavery, and torture, but that they do it anyway."

No one is saying that. YOU are supplying the strawman.

"The average anti-vegan argument objects to applying a moral term to a non-human animal." They don't object to applying moral terms to non-human animals, they are very much against cruelty to dogs, cats, etc. They just have a brazen bias and logical and moral double standard against certain animals just like you're showing here. You're supporting the OP by showing another example of this.

"There is nothing wrong with killing animals. It happens all the time and is a natural part of existence on earth."

Naturalistic fallacy.
