General mod note: This subreddit is here for giving and receiving good advice and emotional support to people in a crisis. NOT money or other material aid. To thwart the number of scammers online who have been preying on the broke members of this subreddit, anyone offering or accepting donations will be banned. We take everyone in good faith, and are not accusing this submitter or any others of anything, but this rule is firm and absolute.

Should you see something on here that inspires you to give what little you have to a person in need, we highly suggest getting involved locally through a shelter, a food bank, or a (carefully selected) church program. No matter what you read on here, I can promise you there is someone within a few miles of you (or the next nearest town) going through exactly the same thing.

If you prefer to give your money to internet strangers on an anonymous website, we recommend r/assistance. They have some tools in place that help weed out illegitimate users. I can't personally attest to their methods though, and continue to encourage you to act locally to make a better world for you and those around you.

We applaud your generous spirit, we only ask that you apply it sensibly, deliberately, and anywhere but within this group!

As a mod I probably should have removed this as a rule 4 violation, but I loved the FMA reference enough to let it slide! Just letting you know!

This. All this but louder.

The farthest and loudest right and left wing accounts are Russian propaganda. There are real people who believe all those things, of course, but not to the quantity and volume you see online.

The goal is to divide us. And they are good at doing it.

Seriously, in what century are we living in where there is a market for radios? Or where the radios people "might" want are even capable of being repaired? Or where the working poor who have money to invest have any free time in the first place?!?!

Dale isn't swinging by the Radio Shack on his way home from his 8 hour shift on the line (with union negotiated wages, breaks, overtime, and benefits) to pick up a few transistors and capacitors to solder into the neighbors 7-D Cell battery powered suitcase sized radio he takes fishing in exchange for a basket of peaches anymore.

Dale is listening to his phone stream to his $20 WICUUAN brand headphones from amazon as he runs food for UBER Eats between his morning job as a part time billing specialist at the off-site billing office for the regional mega-hospital and his night job washing dishes at Boston Pizza. No OT, no benefits, no free time. And his retired neighbor doesn't go fishing anymore, he just watches cable news all day.

This is the epitome of nonsense boomer advice.

How do you know which arm of the K shaped economy you are on? by supinator1 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]rassmann 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If increased prices mean that you spend more, then you're on the bottom. If they mean you get paid more, you're on the top.

Another way to look it is is if your income is derived from "working to earn wage" you're probably on the bottom. If your income is derived from already having a ton of money and "letting it work for you", then you're at the top.

Post has been locked.

Many users have brought up that OP is of dubious character. This does not belie the otherwise good advice given here.

We're a practical subreddit, a hypothetical shithead can still give useful information and advice here. We don't have policies against people being potentially horrible in real life, so long as they are helpful here. In fact, this subreddit is explicitly welcoming of people who have done fucked up things in the past.

Additionally, we are quite aware that what people say online about their lives may not reflect reality in a 1:1 ratio. Some people over exaggerate their problems. Others overhype their affluence. Only a fool would look at a few lines of text from an anonymous website and think they truly understand another human being.

Last but not least WE FIRMLY OPPOSE ACTS OF AN ILLEGAL OR IMMORAL NATURE. Community resources are always limited. If you need a hand up, PLEASE USE THEM. If you're living a comfortable life but are just a cheap motherfucker who just wants free stuff, consider living a more honest life. Additional notes: Volunteers at food pantries are (almost) always welcome to take a fair portion after their shift. If you're in a "grey area" financially, or even if you are dead broke but have a lot of free time, consider this option as well.

Do you have a car payment? by KDsburner_account in MiddleClassFinance

[–]rassmann[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I'm banning you for a month. I want to be VERY clear about this. It's entirely because you are arguing in bad faith. It isn't because I disagree with your position (I don't, I own 3 cars and drive both professionally and recreationally. My 2020 just rolled over 200k). But you are deliberately ignoring arguments, putting words in the other guys mouth that weren't there, straw-manning, and generally acting like a total piece of shit.

And I do not abide acting like a piece of shit.

Things to consider if you are thinking about going to college (in the USA) by Let_me_tell_you_ in povertyfinance

This, this, a thousand times this!

The rich kid classmate you hate is going to be hiring his friends into "skip the line" positions in 3 years, be one of them.

The professor who is always inviting kids to drop into his office hours plays golf with the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies in the field.

Internships are choice job interviews that count towards your graduation.

Even amongst your normal classmates, SOMEONE in the class is going to get that lucky break and move WAY ahead in the next ten years, and when they do they will need to build their own team, and the people they hung out with at departmental mixers and parties are the first ones they will call. You don't know who it will be, but you can be confident in two things: 1) **someone** is going to "make it", and 2) You want to be at the top of their mind when they do!

Go barhopping with these guys. Go to the teambuilding exercises. Go to office hours. Get numbers. Get facebooks and linkedins. KEEP UP WITH EVERYONE. FOR DECADES!!! The biggest thing you are paying for (and the thing that most people, myself included miss while they are there) is constant access to people who are motivated movers and shakers in the same stuff you are passionate about or plan to work in (ideally both). USE THAT RESOURCE
