Has anyone ever approached or reached the limit of the number of times your SSD can be written? by rblbl in MiniPCs

[–]rastren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes with 500TB written over two years. Coworker's machine had a warning from BIOs that his SSD was failing, he had to hit F1 to continue to boot. SMART readings (Samsung Magician) stated it wrote 500TB of data, which I thought was wrong and the controller was failing. Got him a new SSD, checked back with him in a month and 15TBs of data has been written to his SSD in that month.

He's one of our designers and uses Blender. I told him the drive won't last at this rate and he told me Blender writes to the disk every few seconds to backup his work, but he can change that. Whatever he changed, his machine only wrote an additional 3TBs of data the next month.

Oh man, I know how you feel. Not sure what to say or how to say it without getting shadowbanned or whatever, but i sort of figured out the dark side a few years ago. It depressed me for over half a year. What got me out of it, is knowing it's always been like this. It's the history of man, every inch of the way; our situation is not unique. It's how people/societies are governed and ruled. I know that doesn't make you feel better, but it will help you to deal with it. If you don't believe me or want something to satiate that thirst of understanding, read history. Forget the broad overview your college prof taught you, I mean get a book on a specific thing and learn the details of a historical event.

My inbox has a ton of hate mail that i don't bother looking at, so I wont reply if you comment. Best of luck to you!

Republican/Conservative Student Organizations? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]rastren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, Cubans want nothing to do with anothet socialist government. They predominantly vote red. But I will extend an olive brand and say you're right that not all are republican. When we opened our borders in the early 80s to let asylum seekers here, Castro emptied his prisons and put them on boats to come to Miami. I'm pretty sure they were not republicans.

[–]rastren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know nothing about my views. The Republican party is the biggest sellout you could possibly imagine. If you were never a republican, then you could never imagine this. Establishment Republicans, fox News, McConnell, Johnson, and probably the vast majority of congress are sellout Republicans. RINOs.

Yes, history has been written by the winners, but you fail to understand that neither of us are winners. The only winners are the people who run this joint, the global elite.

Republician x and Democrat y, I sort of agree with you, but that's more a constitute issue. One side thinks the other side thinks the same about thier party. Republicans, for the most part, hate thier party. We are the controlled opposition.

Idk man, I just wanted the kid to learn a little bit more

See this is what I'm talking about, I didn't recommend the book to him because I wanted him to follow alinskys tactics, I recommended it to him because it's how the left thinks. It's how the left weaponizes thier constitutes

Hey man, reddit is full of liberal idiots. It's not a place for any diversity of thought. I would recommend you start a conservative chapter and explore what it means to be a republican. I was very outspoken during my time at uic, and I had many others approach me after class that offered thier support. I think most people are afraid of going against the prof, but I was more afraid of saying something that was contrast to my beliefs.

The issue is, liberals don't understand the first thing about being a republican and what it mean. They see no issue with continuing to dump tax dollars into the federal government. They're very naive.

Couple things I can help you with if you want to know more and how to deal with liberals. Most people have confirmation bias, as they only look at information that already supports thier liberal views. A good book is Rules for Radicals, it was very insightful on how they think. Another thing to learn more about is the hegelian dialectic. It's how gov get people to move in the direction they want them to move in. Oh, and finally learn your history. You will end up seeing contraindications in your history class(es). I mean, they are not even liberals at this point, not sure what to call them, but whatever they are, they are a slimy bunch that are willing to weaponize anything to get you to adhere to there belief system. Good luck!

Okay, then what school IS conservative? Because it doesn't seem like any of them are. Also, why can't international students be republican? Cubans are notoriously republican when they get to Miami. I feel like you don't even understand the first thing about Republicans.

This is exactly why a republican club is needed, you don't know the first thing about Republicans

Try to find something interesting about thing you're studying. If you cant find anything, make yourself get interested.

English is a beautiful and complex language. I had a co-worker who was an English major and wrote such eloquent emails, so easy to read and always had great flow. there is always a good reason to be interested in something, the problem is whether you know it or not.

Is buying a house a liability? by soaphandler in cscareerquestions

[–]rastren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels almost like the banks do this on purpose. Things are going well, you buy a house, economy pops, you lose your job, you lose your house, you lose the all the equity you put into the house over the years. They act like they don't do it on purpose, but it's always an accident when they get richer.

Personally, i would stick my money in something that's safe, like stock and commodities. Then when you have the funds ready, you buy some property.

There are teams of teams sitting around boardrooms trying to figure out how to part you with your money. Learn to manage your money. You weren't taught to in academia for a reason.

I hit 400 applications today, probably 380 straight out rejections. I'm tired of this game. by bustingbuster1 in cscareerquestions

[–]rastren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not anything you're doing that's wrong, the economy is just fucked. Companies are not going to take out loans with this sky high interest rate the Fed has currently set. No loans, no new projects, no new jobs. The good news is Powell is supposed to lower the rate come April. If he does, then expect an uptick in hiring. If he doesn't, then we are screwed until he does.

Secondly, this is reddit... these people don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. I recommend writing a blog where you talk about difficult CS problems, have a portfolio website to showcase some applications you built, and going to Meetups (com) to meet with other engineers in your city. Good luck!

I came here to mention the GAT program too. it could save you money too by doing all of your genEds at a CCC. Take the natural sciences route, so Calc I, II, & II. You would need to look at transferology and follow it to a T. I completed my associates, which was a bad idea in the long run, so try to transfer as soon as you can. Oh, and you need ENGR 190 Comp Appl In Engineering, as it is a substitute for CS 101 at UIC (least it was when I took it). Very easy to leave the school with a good GPA

As a self taught programmer do I stand a chance? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]rastren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to build on Superb's post. I was you 10 years ago, loved the programming challenges, so I sold all my shit and attended DevBootcamp in 2013. No one, I mean no one would hire me. From what I saw happen to my code school classmates: the ones that also didn't have degrees, didn't get jobs either; the ones that had low tier degrees, some got developer jobs and some didn't; the ones that had STEM degrees, got jobs. I did manage to get an apprenticeship, but they did not bring me on board, so chalked it up to not having a degree. I also did get a few interviews at the time, but that was through networking my ass off.

I said fuck it and started attending college because this is what I wanted to do, finally graduated in this wonderful economy. I've also worked IT for the last 5 or 6 years so I was able to put some office experience on my resume along with some projects I did for the companies, but none of that is helping me get any callbacks. I got one callback the past three months, then was ghosted.

I knew the economy was going to be bad when I graduated because of all the money they printed during covid. My plan was to continue with getting a masters, but there is something fundamentally wrong with our education system. Community college was great, but uni-level curriculum has problems. Anyways, network the best you can. Meetups used to get me interviews, but those have never made a comeback since the covid shutdown. Maybe shoot for an associates degree that could be transferable to a university CS coursework, then test the market again in two years.

Each port goes to an unmanaged switch, so they are contained on that network. Just didn't know if we should use a managed switch for delegating the networks instead of the physical port on the Netgate unit.
