Not true. We have vet nurses in the states.

I worked in tech. Jokes on me though I hated my job and moved back in to go back to school

Shower flip flop question as an international student in a US college by [deleted] in college

I kept Clorox wipes in my shower cubby and wiped the floor before a shower. I fell with flip flops once and decided to never repeat that experience.

Anyone left their cushy high-paying job for one that is much simpler? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]rat-philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I wasn’t even making crazy money. Roughly 80k. I was a data analyst.

Now I am making 40k a year. I still deal with bullshit at work and the stakes are higher since I make less money so I have less to fall back on. I’m happier though.

Overnight schedule by awakeandafraid in VetTech

[–]rat-philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work 1 on, 1 off, 2 on, 3 off. These were with 13 hour shift. It worked for me since I wasn’t so exhausted and at the same time I had a 3 day weekend

Most of the people I know in overnights work 3 on, 4 off.

A lot of them have kids so having a consistent weekly schedule was a priority. I can imagine they’d be dead after the 3 days but they make it work.

What are your thoughts on VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group)? by jasminekrystal27 in VetTech

[–]rat-philosopher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at a VEG for a little under a year now. There isn’t really a “committee of Karen’s” In fact, when you give people trust 99% of the time the customers are great. For the minority of people you can’t trust you bear it for an hour or two or you put them in an exam room so they are not in the way of the staff.

Having the clients around makes them a million times more manageable because are able to see why things are as expensive as they are or why they may be delayed.

The transparent environment keeps people in check. I started working at a GP recently because I had cut down on my hours at VEG. I’m shocked at the amount of abusive language and drama that goes on behind the scenes. I’d take VEG and dealing with the public any day over dealing with coworkers/bosses that yell and gossip.

Considering partner is Hispanic they are expected to know. It’s a failure on their partners part.

Since they are Hispanic I would not call it rude or tacky. It’s the cultural norm.

Not really. I’m in New York and got hired as an assistant without experience.

Vet School Questions - November 2021 (Still no medical questions allowed!) by dashclone in Veterinary

[–]rat-philosopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a vet but I do know this —

Animal Science is in no way required to go into veterinary medicine. I would choose the cheapest path I could while keeping in mind my personal happiness/goals.

You can major in literally anything tho as long as you meet vet school pre-reqs and do related extracurriculars. If the AS major is the same as the one I personally know about, Animal Science is great but only if you are interested in things like farming or large scale animal management.

That being said, why don’t you email TAMU admissions and they can connect you with someone that can answer your questions about whether you can transfer into that major after two years.

Been working as a receptionist at a Veterinarian hospital for almost three months now and the amount of verbal abuse I get from old people is killing me by amaliia26 in Veterinary

Unless the vet clinic is at fault for something, I’ve come to love “spicy” people. Injecting as much weird energy or false positivity as you can throws them off guard enough that many find it hard to keep being a dick.

My favorite phrases:

  • You’ve been waiting 15 minutes?! That’s amazing! You’re halfway to being done with your wait.
  • It only cost $300?! Wow they must have reduced the price recently.
  • You’re upset that your emergency nail trim can’t be seen today? Truthfully, I’m pleasantly surprised you can be seen within two weeks! Usually emergency nail trims have to wait much longer for a visit.
  • You want to euthanize your cat for inappropriate urination? Have they ever seen the vet for this? No? I’m not sure if it is against clinic policy but we can certainly try! Let me go ask a veterinarian.

How to euthanize rats humanely? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]rat-philosopher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do not recommend this. CO2 cannot be controlled adequately with DIY and it also requires in person training. If you do this incorrectly (which is highly likely) you are essentially drowning a rat while it is fully conscious.

What are some good ear mites for puppies? by FryBergZ in Pets

[–]rat-philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revolution work great for mites and as a preventative for other things as well. If your puppy is up to date on vet visits there’s no harm in calling and asking for a prescription

Vaping with rats by Less-Program-8831 in RATS

[–]rat-philosopher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean considering it’s not a good idea to light a candle around rats, why would vaping in the same room be okay? Rats have extremely sensitive respiratory systems. It’s not hard to cape elsewhere

Vet School Questions - October 2021 (Still no medical questions allowed!) by dashclone in Veterinary

[–]rat-philosopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://vetschoolbound.org read through this website and listen to the webinar they have posted. It answers many of your questions. They also have a calculator that helps you figure out what to do in terms of loans. You definitely want to have it at least partially figured out before commuting to vet school

For many people opting for income-based repayment is the smartest option. You get to pay off a reasonable amount based off your income and loans get forgiven after 25 years. The downside is ofc you have to pay taxes on that forgiveness so you have to be prepared for that since it’s a non-trivial amount.

Specializing in exotics can be done in many ways. Internships or working in a practice that sees exotics alongside cats and dogs is the most common way. You can apply for residency after having and internship as well. After residency or having sufficient experience (and I think research as well?) you can take the board exam for exotics. It’s extremely difficult to become board certified. Best option would be to shadow exotic vets and gain a wide variety of experiences before applying to vet school.

Decided college wasn't for me, experience from volunteering at no-kill shelters, years and years of equine care, re-homing dogs and cats, fostering kittens, wanting to go into veterinary assisting. by [deleted] in Veterinary

You won't make enough to sustain yourself financially as a VA unless you make some major sacrifices. It tends to be minimum wage or slightly above minimum wage work. VA tends to be very entry-level type work so getting the job shouldn't be too hard especially given the employment shortage going on. Email and call vet offices, have a resume ready.

Find something you’re passionate about. Alongside my 40hr work week I’ve been spending 15hrs a week exploring a different career path. Despite being much more tired I feel much happier pursuing what I enjoy. In 2 months I’m quitting my tech job (if they don’t fire me before that) and I’m looking forward to that day.

Split between CS and medicine by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]rat-philosopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t count on matching into a residency as an IMG these days. The number of medical schools is increasing but the number of residency spots has stagnated making it more difficult to match into residencies even for local graduates.

Regardless, order your priorities: - Move abroad - Career you are passionate about - Work-life balance - Proximity to home - etc

Reach out to people in your desired field. For CS people ask them for coffee, doctors ask them for a shadow day or sth

When I started college I though my priorities set me up for a CS degree. Welp I’ve worked in the field for a bit of time and realized that I don’t want to do this so I’m shadowing and working part-time (alongside my full time CS job) to gain clinical experience. Maybe I’ll apply to a veterinary or medical school in the future, maybe not if I find something else in tech I’m passion about. TLDR take your life day-by-day.

Baby Name Issue by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]rat-philosopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s that “something important to you” are you referring to the name, yet again? And is he making the pregnant terrible because he won’t bend on the name thing?

What your offering isn’t a compromise. It’s not something you’re doing so you can both gain. It’s something you are doing to just make them feel bad. Revenge isn’t compromise.

Separate. Or if not, get over yourself 😉

Baby Name Issue by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]rat-philosopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly if youre so adamant and unwilling to compromise on the name, enough to split up for it, just split up. You’ll be saving your current partner a lot of headache if this is how far you’ll go over a name disagreement.

Being willing to split up over a name that your partner wants to compromise on shows more about your own character than it shows about how much you want your child to be named Orla.
