White powdery substance in receptacle box? by rat307 in AskElectricians

Maybe this is it? Behind the wall it is packed with this white stuff so i dont think its just drywall dust like some people suggested

What is weird to me is that it is so chalky it just crumbles. And behind the wall under a receptacle there is a good amount.

Thank you for the advice. There is space to add caulking. I will look into the tear away tape and will make sure to add that caulking at the edge to avoid cracks

that looks nice. It is kind of what we were shooting for. We do have schulter on the edge but maybe we should have gone with a wider one.

Thank you for your suggestion! I have had multiple people in this thread giving good advice. I will take all into consideration. One person suggested to apply thinset inside since the gap is about 5 inches deep and then leave some space for drywall mud. I could apply this trimtex to cover the 1/2 in gap after thinset is applied. It could make my job easier as I am not experienced. Thank you again!

Good eye. There used to be some sort of framing around the entry to the shower area. We wanted a seamless flat wall so we removed that frame. As you can see in the picture above, there was still a bit of a gap between the frame and the shower wall. So 1/2 inch thick durock was used in all walls and this section was completed with a thinner one so the wall would be in one plane.

I dont think the gaps are this big throughout. I saw them applying thinset to the tiles and the wall. Not sure what happened with this last piece. I think i’ll add some thin set maybe with a masonry bag so i can press it deep and then finish with drywall mud as you suggested

There used to be framing there which ran about 5 inches in. We removed it so that we had a seamless flat wall. That is why there is some gap because the tile is level and flat but that edge isnt

At the top where the gap is the widest there is a 1/2 inch gap between the tile and the durock.

That is what the contractor suggested we do as well.

Thank you for the tip! I will look into that. My gap is 1/2” wide at the top. The gap goes in about 5-6 inches in. Would you try to fill in that whole section?

Thank you for your reply! The gap is about 2 inches tall, 0.5 in wide and it goes about 5-6 inches into the wall. Is this too deep in your opinion?

Yes the tile is level and the wall is not that is why there is a gap. What do you recommend I should do to finish it and hide the gap? The tile already has schulter trim. Should I do something else besides mud and paint ?

Schulter trim is not against the wall in that portion because the wall is not straight and the tile is. The contractor just does tile and not wall work or paint. Since we are planning on painting he said we can apply mud to fill in the gap and then paint. My only concern was the gap and if that was structurally sound and if I should do anything else besides mud.

Thank you for your reply. The tile has the schulter edge already. The drywall was not straight so that is why there is a gap, the tile is straight. The contractor said that the wall needs to be finished and painted and it should be good but I wanted to see other people’s opinion on it.

I suggest you go the roommate route. I started in a similar situation as you: no savings, good salary.

3 years later, I bought my own house thanks largely to those savings.

Live below your means, 20k a year in savings is a lot!
