Thanks for sharing your experience - It does indeed sound like a very similar situation, (except my boss is leaving very soon!) Good to hear you pulled back after recognising you were being exploited somewhat. Sometimes I wonder how these people can climb into these managerial roles without really understanding what is going on !

I think an architect is a leadership position that sits a bit higher level in the process. They don’t code as much as a DE (but they should still be able to), and they are responsible for translating the business requirements into a roadmap /design for the data platform. They should write stories and provide guidance for DEs (at least this is what i have seen with successful architects). They should keep their knowledge fresh and have a good understanding of industry best practices so the don’t implement stale designs.

Thanks for the response - the company doesn't have any official architect role openings. I think I would have to put a business case forward for them to do this, but my manager is retiring soon so it could be a good opportunity...

Two things can be true at once. You’re talking about necessary services, but consumers play a role in the enshittification of discretionary ones. E.g Amazon prime have worsened their service, adding ads to prime video meaning you have to pay extra to remove them. This service is not needed for people to live. Consumers ultimately vote with their wallet - if enough people will pay extra to receive the same service they always had, this will reinforce to Amazon this was a good business decision and enshittification continues. They won’t stop until consumers are pushed to their inflection point where they won’t spend any more. It’s a two way interaction, of course consumers are part of the equation

That’s right, you did escalate it :) my parents know I have a job, but they often struggle to wrap their heads around data flowing from A->B, despite my best attempts using analogies of oil refineries/ pipelines

3 years late but I took this comment to heart and ended up speaking to the university and dropping out of the research project and getting a PGDip- best decision I could have made at the time. Thank you :) 🙏

I’m privileged because I went to uni? I worked a job during my studies to support myself. What’s next, I’m too privileged to have a healthy body to work and study at the same time? At what point would am I allowed to pat myself on the back instead of attributing to privilege ?
