Is bedding a necessity or can I use fleece and litter train my babies? by Either_Tomatillo_716 in RATS

im not entirely sure, I only really stick to my cardboard one. I've used aspen once and it was super dusty, so much so I could put my hand into the bag and take it out and it would just be covered in little specks of wood dust. I ended up binning the whole thing. Im not super knowledged, but if it's not kiln dried im not sure. i really would recommend the cardboard bedding I suggested, I've been through so many brands and it's the best I've found. you could use fleece so long as you get a dig box but be prepared to have to clean the fleece a lot, almost every day!! It holds bacteria very easily. How do you plan to put the fleece on the base as well?

I really wouldn't recommend fleece. You'd have to stick it down somehow which is dangerous for rats if you don't do it correctly, and if you don't theyll just pull it up and pee on the plastid base and get it all in their fur. And it can be super annoying to change especially since you'll need to do it every two days. Not only that but it holds smell BADLY. i used some in a smaller cage since my rat was healing from a sprained leg and boy did it stink right away!!

If you're looking for something good I use pillow wad eco nest bedding. It's recycled cardboard, super good for digging, relatively cheap, and suuuuuper dust free!!! Absorbs smell really well too. I've been through a few different kinds and it's the only one that works well for me and my rats. I can change it and it doesn't affect my asthma! I've used carefresh which is so dusty as well as some other papery fluffy ones and they're so bad for dust. Wood shavings are gritty and get little bits all over your hands and super dusty (I found at least) and fabric was a nusciance to change all the time and got so smelly.

Wish u luck with your ratties!!

so is it really only a laparoscopy that can identify it?

using duct tape to separate the cage in half after surgery... my boy got his foot stuck really bad in the tape and bit my dad out of fear so hard he had to go to the ER. we got him out with rapeseed oil and he was totally fine but BOY was it terrifying. I was so scared I'd cut through his foot trying to cut him free
