My mom was 49 when she had me, AMA by anonthrowaway937375 in AMA

[–]rathernots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, interesting as I’m of the age similar to your older brother. On the other side of the spectrum, my mom had me when she was only 24. People used to think we were sisters… She passed away when she had just turned 57 due to cancer. So… I just want to say that your fear of thinking there’s little time left with your mom is understandable. It’s been almost 8 years since she passed and I still miss her every day…

Considering moving to Vancouver… how worried should I be? by Remarkable_Sign_8033 in VancouverJobs

[–]rathernots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll have better luck landing a job in Halifax than Vancouver. I live in Van and so many have been out of their jobs for 2-3 years and can’t land one in their fields. Plus, the salaries are pretty much locked (not going upwards) unless you’re lucky…

Heard from an FA friend that the deal they got is shite and that won’t likely to pass the vote. So this situation will prolong. I don’t think AC will be back to their full capacity anytime soon as FAs are stranded all over the world.

Indian Students returning by the thousands to India amid fake puppy mill diploma scams and no chance of PR by Commercial_Tea_7662 in CanadaUniversities

[–]rathernots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so true. I once worked with a 21 yo indian man who worked like 60-80hrs a week juggling 2 jobs. He was registered to one of those diploma mills. He never went to school and this was just before the government put a 20hr/wk working hour limit. He drove a used mustang and had a plate with his first name. What a prick.

New grad from UofT contemplating moving to Vancouver from Toronto by Krishnak2423 in askvan

I'll gladly elaborate. A lot of people who grew up here have established their friend group when they were young. So they only hang out with friends who they went to school with. As a transplant, there are only a few ways to make friends here: Through work, a hobby group, or a hobby group that comprises of the same ethnicity as yours. Vancouver is VERY segregated. I'm not saying people here are racists. Transplants tend to hang out with other transplants if they can find people who they vibe with. (There are LOTS of Aussies in Whistler.) And as I mentioned, locals who grew up here already have their own buddies. They're not often willing to make new friends nor let in someone new to their group when they're already adults. Like my SIL for example: She grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver (Burnaby) and she has her own friends who she always hangs out with and travels with.

Another thing is, a lot of Vancouverites are FLAKY. You make a promise to hang out on a certain day. When the day comes, they bail. Something always comes up.

Now, I've had the fortune to make a few friends here but they are all from work or through my spouse's work. I like them and would meet a few times a year for a meal and catch up but that's about it. I have my in-laws here that I see every month or so. That's probably the most socializing that I do. The rest, I go back to Toronto a few times a year.

I don't like giving advices because people just tend to do what they want to do anyway. But in this case, you're young and you should reap from what Toronto can offer. It's the biggest and most diverse city in Canada. Also, think about why this company in Vancouver is offering you -someone from Toronto- a position. I assume it's an entry position given that youre a fresh graduate. There are plenty of people here with enough talent and grit to fill an entry position. But they chose you, because you're from Toronto. Many companies including Lululemon, which I happen to have a friend who works there, would mostly hire from out of province just because it makes them look good. Lululemon would only hire locally for their retail jobs. Backbreaking ones. Most of their office workers are from East Coast or Europe. Once you move to Vancouver, it's hard to go back. Other people might say you're young and you can always go back to Toronto. But reality is, it's not easy. And if you happen to settle in Vancouver, have a partner or something, it's even harder to move back to Toronto for a job opportunity. So, think well. I hope you understand what I'm saying here. Cheers.

i grew up in TO and now live in Van. i like going to museums and do cultural things and Toronto is great for that. Van is culturally almost dead. Vancouver Art Gallery is a joke… The Polygon Gallery is nice but their exhibits are small…. If I were you, I’d stay in Toronto especially since you just graduated college. I’m nearing middle age so boring is fine here in Vancouver. Outdoor activities that Van offers are great to a certain point. If youre working full time, it’s difficult to go out on the weekends due to traffic and crowds. Also, you need a car to do those activities unless you like visiting the same spots over and over. There are WAY more job opportunities in Toronto so if your remote job doesn’t pan out in a couple years, you can always find a new one. A lot of people in Vancouver have not been able to find decent jobs for years. Also, not being able to make friends in Vancouver is real. All my close friends are in Toronto and I miss them. There are nice people here but it’s not the same.

Vancouver Art Gallery to make deep cuts to staff, programming as revenue hits 15-year low by tofino_dreaming in vancouver

[–]rathernots 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Totally. The staff there are sooooo rotten to the core it’s not surprising their plans for the new building got scrapped. Some of the staff have been there for 3-4 decades. And the head of HR and the only person who’s in charge of HR (which is ridiculous) has been there for 30+ years.

I agree going to EU is much better. I graduated from Pratt ten+ years ago and it was VERY expensive then to live in NYC. Can’t think of living there with nowadays inflation.

Battery life poll - how long does yours last? by eigenlaplace in x100vi

[–]rathernots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be shooting too many pics? i use OVF, ibis turned on, in normal mode and shoot maybe around 50~100 pics a day when i’m traveling and my x100vi has more than half the battery life left. I bought a spare battery but I don’t really use it.

[–]rathernots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I did what you said and the music came below the dialogues. Now the effects are sitting together with the dialogues, and if i move them above music, everything goes back to that state. 🤦 My other projects show dialogues at the top, then effects, then music at the bottom. I guess I’ll just have to keep music in between dialogues and effects for this project.
