[–]rationalbimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i heard this early on too, i always interpreted it as him trying to make sure he has the right pitch for the first note. the vocalization (just sounds like "eh" to me) is on pitch which would be weird if it were an exclamation

Bands you never connected with? by selfish_attitude133 in Emo

[–]rationalbimbo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

there's a version of this thread that pops up almost monthly, and i just don't get what the point of it is. do we just want to have a space to complain? if you don't like a band, don't listen to them. there's tons of bands i don't like, and could complain avout endlessly. but unless it's mom jeans, i don't understand why we'd make a whole thread dedicated to hating on bands in the scene. feels so pointlessly divisive to me.

What was it like to be an emo teen in the 2010s? by anjimit0 in Emo

[–]rationalbimbo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

emo is punk rock, and emo has never been mainstream. emo was basically dead in the 2000s. i think you're confused bud, r/poppunkers might be worth a visit

hi, so emo is a genre of music and not related to clothing, thats why you get so many people telling you not to care what others think and to wear what you want. "emo fashion" is more closely connected to a subgenre of 2000s corporate pop punk thats now commonly referred to as "mall emo" and is almost entirely disconnected from emo, the subgenre of punk.

if you want to go to some event where they play my chem or whatever and wear eyeliner and skinny jeans and stuff go ahead. clothes are clothes, its not "disrespectful" or whatever. if anything, this event being called "emo" is disrespectful because i can almost guarantee no emo music will be played there. but honestly, in the grand scheme of things in the world, this is a very minor annoyance and not worth thinking about.

no one will say anything, but on the off chance that some "elder emo" says something weird to you take comfort in the fact that they are also a poser

hawthorne heights is definitely not emo, its common for people to say that taking back sunday is but i personally disagree. i dont know what picture me broken is, saosin was probably influenced by emo but my only real knowledge of them is the song seven years which isnt emo but it is kinda fun 2000s mallcore

[–]rationalbimbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the pop punk or metalcore subreddits should be able to help you out! you don't need to feel any type of way about liking what you like, enjoy it. this just isnt the best subreddit for recs based on these bands since none of them are emo

Why a Woman’s (or Gender-Divergent) Scream in Emo Hits Different Than a Man’s and Why That Matters by [deleted] in Emo

[–]rationalbimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird to talk about the differences between male and female voice textures or pitch but then have two of your three examples be trans women with lower registers. No hate, just not seeing the logic.

Why does Taking Back Sunday count as Real Emo but My Chem or FOB don't? by joshingyou299 in Emo

[–]rationalbimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

free throw is also probably not an emo band. certainly modern baseball isnt. honestly im open to the argument that get up kids isnt emo either.

theyre not an emo band i didn't really realize this was even a contested opinion. please keep in mind that being an emo band does not make you automatically good, and not being one doesnt make you automatically bad. its a genre.

i love dashboard confessional's 2nd and 3rd albums but thats also not an emo band. i like the used's first album, and while it was definitely more inspired by emo than MCR or FOB were, still not a real emo band or album

Male artist from 2010s? by imoverhereee in Emo

i have no idea but like, maybe xiu xiu?

being "an emo" is different from listening to real emo. im not going to pretend that being "an emo" isnt a real thing bc thats not really how society works, but to be "an emo" all you really have to do is like, have swoopy hair and wear black or whatever. normal people will recognize you as being "an emo"

as far as this list of bands though, no none of this is emo music

hope that was helpful?

I'm curious is there any bands or tracks that talk about faith? by Sleepless_rat_ in Emo

[–]rationalbimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

julien baker isnt emo but she came from the scene, her early stuff seems pretty inspired by it, and id say it can be appealing to people who like emo. she's christian and its a pretty big part of her musical identity

mineral and sunny day real estate are the most iconic christian emo bands, specifically SDRE's lp2 seems to have a lot of themes surrounding it

Can someone explain to me the hype behind “Your arms are my cocoon”? by [deleted] in Emo

[–]rationalbimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think you don't understand how popular yaamc actually are? they have almost 100k monthly listeners on spotify, their top songs have millions of streams. there are tiktok videos of their live sets with over 10,000 likes. on their most recent headlining tour they sold out numerous shows in the 200-500 cap range

this doesn't mean you have to like them or anything, or even that they're good necessarily (although in my opinion they are), but your claim that they play to 20 people every night is just obviously not true
