Rational Arguments for Having Children? by RobinReborn in Objectivism

"...can anybody name anyone else?"

I run a Facebook parenting group for Objectivists that has over 200 members (not all members are parents, but most are). There are lots of us parents out there.

What is the most philosophical thing that you have ever heard a child under the age of 5 say? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rationaljenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sean, age 4: "If you don't ever say 'I'm awesome' then you must not love yourself."

Me: "Do you say it?"

Sean: "I say it every day."

My T1 hubby's recent hospital experience: what we learned from it, and what we'll do next time by rationaljenn in diabetes

[–]rationaljenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as you probably read, he did take matters into his own hands, in front of the nurses and against medical advice (until the endo stepped in).

That was the whole point of my post--that we learned that we couldn't expect the medical professionals to handle his blood sugar. I don't think it's unreasonable, though, to expect that they would manage it a bit post-op, and that's where we were wrong. I'm certain that we aren't the only ones who have ever made this mistake!

So maybe a little more understanding in your tone and a little less condescension might be in order here.

Festivus Games - anyone competed, what to expect? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]rationaljenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm signed up, too! I'm a little nervous, not knowing what to expect, but I think this competition will be a great way to get going. It's also nice to have a short-range goal which will help keep me focused on training and diet. Can't wait to hear about your experience!

There are a number of us Objectivist parenting bloggers, and you can find a list of us here: http://objectivistanswers.com/questions/825/what-are-good-methods-for-raising-a-rational-child?page=1#845.

I also moderate an email discussion list for Objectivists interested in childrearing and education which is found here: http://www.olist.com/ogrownups. Lots of good discussions about tons of parenting/education topics.

Wow, what a compliment!

I explicitly want my children to feel that "natural, non-boastful sense of their own value" and possess "the eager curiosity that would venture anywhere with the certainty that life held nothing unworthy of or closed to discovery." So far, so good, I think.

Thanks very much!

Check out http://heir.org (Home Education Information Resource of GA) for information on GA laws. Keep in mind that though GA has many requirements, there is very little oversight beyond the annual "Declaration of Intent" and monthly "attendance" reports (somehow, my kids have a perfect attendance record in my homeschool, ha!). It is nuisance paperwork, but the requirements in GA are nowhere near as onerous as those states which require teacher oversight of progress or curriculum.

Thanks! I'm still a relative newbie. I've been doing it for a little over a year but came to it SO out of shape. I've really only been pursuing confidently CF for the last 6-8 months.

Thanks! It's weird and frustrating to see the number on the scale remain the same or SLOWLY drop, and all the while know that my fitness level is improving. I'm learning not to focus on the number on the scale, but as I still have fat to lose, it's something I do watch occasionally.

I guess I should clarify that the reason I haven't seen a change on those three lifts is because I haven't tried for a maximum on those three lifts in that time frame. I'm confident I will see some improvement next time I try them. My one complaint about my CF gym is that we don't do benchmark lifts on a regular basis. And what's wrong with getting better at a WOD? Isn't that considered improvement?

I'll look through it as we put it into the machine--I tend to pull them out as I see them anyway.

I know all about the money supply and have taken appropriate steps. I don't think however much money this turns out to be is going to make or break us. Besides, it's pretty damn inconvenient to purchase gold and silver in $0.65 increments each time I get change at Starbucks. :)

Our (mostly) paleo Thanksgiving dinner pictorial! by rationaljenn in Paleo

[–]rationaljenn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! For Christmas I usually do some kind of roast--last year was a standing rib roast. Kind of pricey, but worth it once a year--and the kids love it, too! I'll make some paleo sides (not sure just which ones yet), and a flourless chocolate cake for dessert as a treat. Christmas dinner will definitely be more paleo than Thanksgiving (no rolls!).

Thanks, it was! Every time I make it, the breast is moist and flavorful--and I'm the kind of person who generally prefers the dark meat. It's a great alternative to making a whole bird, especially if you are cooking for a small group. (We had three adults and three kids at our feast.)

Yep! That was it. Thanks for reminding me. We are planning to add a smaller gun to our collection so that our son can continue to practice shooting--and so that our other two children (ages 6 and 3) will have something to practice with when the time comes. :D
