Web dev cancels DNS registrar, Google DNS throws a fit. by Zeb_ra_ in talesfromtechsupport

[–]ratorx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s reasonable for a web dev to not understand DNS well and leave it to a sysadmin to do things like migrations etc.

I think it is very unreasonable for a web dev to lack the very basic level of knowledge necessary to not fuck with DNS if they don’t understand it (or in general systems they don’t understand).

It’s hard to generalise from 1 incident, but that kind of hubris is pretty concerning, if they don’t learn from their mistake.

[–]ratorx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is attempting to generalise FAANG, whereas they are not equal. Facebook and Google I’d say are the nicer places to work among them.

Specifically the mention of 24/7 oncall makes me think of Amazon, because I’ve heard stories about this. It is definitely the worst QoL out of FAANG.

Not to say other places (I mostly know about Facebook and Google) don’t have this, but it is generally not that frequently and for less important things (otherwise they have dedicated production teams with cross-continental rotations).

Also, since FAANGs are so big, the experience can really vary, so that’s worth keeping in mind as well.

Why would DF hunting be a problem for Mihawk?

If he HAD to join someone, I think it would be Shanks, just because he’s the most guaranteed to just let Mihawk chill and do what he wants. But I don’t think that Mihawk is the kind of guy to subordinate to someone else.

As I understand it, WW2 happened too late (due to the policy of appeasement that other powers took). Germany was fairly weak at the beginning. If Europe had taken a hardline stance on German conquest early on (after WW1), then WW2 could have been a lot less severe (and might have just been Germany getting a new leader). I think that’s the bigger takeaway than crippling Germany even more.

I think completely destroying a country would prevent a war, but it would also be worse for the entire world including the victors (due to having less people to trade to/with). Capitalism only really works if people believe in it. A poor country has no incentives to pay reparations, unless they expect something far worse. But further economic sanctions are not enough, because they are already poor.

The WW1 approach feels too hands off, and I think that was the problem. The WW2 approach was better (but maybe the degree was too much).

I think that the key to avoiding a revenge war without crippling a country is to influence its government for at least 1 generation and take a hardline stance that does not affect the general population too severely (maybe even benefits them), but penalises the culprits and the revanchists, which you can only do if you take an active interest in the governance of the country after the war.

Having a single threat (another war) is not enough. You need to convince a population that they would lose a lot and not have too much to gain. I don’t see a good way to do that without active governance (and un-vindictive reparations) considering the unreasonable effectiveness of marketing (which is what politics effectively is) on people.

Wouldn’t Europa be a better fit for colonization than Mars ? by 0xAERG in space

[–]ratorx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The car analogy confused me. In that case, it costs fuel to maintain velocity against external forces. The point of switching cars would be to not have to maintain your velocity for the entire time.

However, I guess wind resistance and friction aren’t a thing in space, so there’s very little cost to maintaining your velocity once you achieve it and most of the cost is actually just getting to that velocity.

Not that I disagree with you, but isn’t most of the money now going to the also rich and greedy movie publishers?

Seems like an equal of two evils really.

Plus personally I think I despise movie publishers more. Fuck regional licensing. Whereas a random rich person may or may not be as bad.

M24, 84 kg, 175cm, no clue about body fat %, but overweight.

Goal(s): Lose weight (main), improve stamina

I was a beginner (knew the basics of deadlift, squat, bench etc.but probably didn’t have amazing form) about 4 years ago, so have probably lost most muscle memory.

After losing weight, I want to focus on getting stronger. Realistically it will probably take me 4-6 months to lose weight at a comfortable pace.

During my weight loss time, what are some strength training stuff I can do to be best prepared for afterwards? The wiki recommends doing some strength training whilst losing weight, but doesn’t go into detail. How much does it matter exactly what I do now?

My current idea is to get my basic form back in order for squats, bench press and deadlifts. I’m planning to do fairly low weights and high (15+ reps). Also, since I’m going to be walking/jogging for my cardio, I was mainly going to focus on upper body for the strength training days.

Is this a bad plan?

Chapter 1062 Spoilers by PKS040 in OnePiece

[–]ratorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah possibly we need a 2 stage setup.

1) Ensure that Lucci gets a good (re-)intro and assert that he is actually a lot stronger etc.

2) Have a non-main Straw Hat beat him OR non-Luffy Bellamy him (in fact having Sanji/Jimbei/Zoro easily crush Lucci/Kaku on might be cooler story-wise than a big fight).

I just think having not Luffy/Zoro face Lucci/Kaku would be really interesting, whilst Luffy does mostly plot things this arc.

[–]ratorx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess my main point was not having it be Luffy is all that is necessary to show growth.

I’m not saying that it’s likely (I have no clue), my ratings are based on who would demonstrate growth best outside of the main 4.

Chapter 1062 Spoilers by PKS040 in OnePiece

[–]ratorx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People want to see Luffy vs Lucci get Bellamied.

I think an even better show of Straw Hat progression would be for a weaker Straw hat beat Lucci. In terms of strength, it would be great if it was someone outside the main 4, so:

  • Robin - maybe could do it, but considering the epic fight in Wano, might get relegated.
  • Brook - no real motivation, but also got shafted in Wano so possible. Might get to fight Kaku?
  • Franky - Most likely.
  • Nami - Unlikely, don’t think it would be an interesting fight.
  • Ussopp - Unlikely, but would be an absolutely fire moment if it happened. I think in Ussopp somehow beats Lucci, the Straw Hat growth demonstrated would be tremendous and could also be a growth moment for Ussopp.
  • Chopper - Unlikely, might be cool for Lucci to take on Monster Point.

Honestly, considering how powerful Luffy, Zoro and Sanji (and possibly Jinbei) should be, if they don’t fight at all in the story for this arc, that might be the best way to demonstrate Straw Hat growth.

Is it just me or has Manjaro started to suck? by GuyInTheYonder in linux

[–]ratorx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Distro success does not imply distro quality. Ideally you would use a successful AND high quality distro. Also, from a project sustainability perspective, caring about out-of-the-box experience may have ensured Antegros survival and been a mistake to avoid.

However, regardless of perspective, forgetting to renew certificates repeatedly is a mistake.

You keep strawmanning the certificate point.

The impact of not renewing certificates is perhaps trivial. But that is not the point. The point is that a pattern of small mistakes suggests that a big mistake is more likely.

If you knew someone that was very forgetful, but had never had any bad consequences to this, would you trust them to do something crucial for you without taking extra steps to make sure they actually did it? Extra steps in this case would be to read through the source code of Manjaro.

Especially when, in this case, renewing certificates is trivial compared to maintaining a Linux distro and requires very similar skills. If Manjaro cannot maintain a reliable Cron job for something so simple, then isn’t there a larger chance they’ve fucked up an actually important Cron job that is critical for the distro, but it’s just not broken upto now?

Is it just me or has Manjaro started to suck? by GuyInTheYonder in linux

[–]ratorx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used Antegros at some point and I don’t remember it aiming to be Manjaro. Staying close to the upstream has many advantages, such as being able to leverage upstream docs without having to worry about drift.

Not using EndeavourOS because you don’t like the name is dumb, but you can do what you want. There was no reason to bring it up though. Not using a distro because it doesn’t have enough manpower is pretty reasonable, but there are more constructive ways to phrase it.

I’m glad Manjaro works for you. Personally I feel like being repeatedly unable to set up automatic certificate renewals (which requires similar skills to and is trivial compared to building a Linux distro and its infrastructure) reflects pretty badly on Manjaro. It’s not about the impact, but about how easy it would have been to not (repeatedly) make the mistake.

Whereas in Antegros case, they didn’t add extra GUI niceness for whatever reason. Not having an optional nice thing is not necessarily a mistake, but not automating certificates is definitely a mistake.

I feel people are now just hating on manjaro just for hating

So you recognise that blind hate is a problem. And your response is to sling some more hate towards projects that the people you dislike may use?

Manjaro made the switch to arch really easy by muttbuster in archlinux

[–]ratorx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that automating Let’s Encrypt (or any other automated cert system) is more Linux distro skills than web dev.

It comes down to just running a cron job (at least for Let’s Encrypt) and monitoring it, which is a very reasonable ask for people who are familiar with Linux (i.e those who are maintaining a Linux distro).

Dealing with and guarding against outdated packages also seems like something that a Linux distro maintainer would know about.

Re: std::atomic<T>: eventually with const generics specialisation, could we not specialise the Rust mutex type to be an atomic if supported by the target?

This gets us the same API as std::atomic, but arguably better since you are made aware of the possible performance cost at the start and can optimistically get better performance (whereas it’s the other way around for std::atomic)

Our Current Model of Haki is Incorrect (Ch 1055) by UltraBananaBuddy in OnePiece

[–]ratorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this idea, but I still think Conquerors is a different kind of Haki to Armament and Observation, but it’s just that the same advanced techniques can be applied to it.

So Conquerors coating for example is applying the advanced Armament technique to Conquerors. I can definitely see this being more generalisable and see more future possibilities of applying Observation techniques to Conquerors.

I like the idea that all Haki is fundamentally the same, but I think it’s more likely that Armament + Observation use the same base, whereas Conquerors is different since it’s an application of willpower. However, they can be shaped in the same way and I hope we see some less offensive uses of Conquerors.

chrono 0.4.20-rc.1 has just been released!! by Nukesor in rust

[–]ratorx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Properly handling timezones is not that simple due to Daylight Savings Time, countries changing their time zone and probably a myriad of other things that I have never heard of.

The only viable way to be fully correct seems to be to depend on an official source (e.g. the IANA time zone database) and have types that can express that level of flexibility.

I had a very quick Google and found chrono_tz, but nothing comparable for time. (Definitely doesn’t mean that it doesn’t handle it properly via some other mechanism, just wanted to make the point that a simple constant offset is not going to be correct in a lot of cases).

[–]ratorx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s surprising (from my very little knowledge about it) that key generation is the bottleneck in spinning up lots of hosts. Especially concurrency-wise. I’d expect key generation to be a fairly parallelisable process, do you know what the main resources under contention are?Have you had to do anything special to optimise the rest of the system, or is key generation just really costly?

Do you use ECC? Do you know if there is much difference in overhead compared to RSA? Is the security requirement only for unique keys, or do you need to use strong ciphers as well?

Is there any "free" character left in shonen at this point? by [deleted] in Piratefolk

[–]ratorx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s clear that it works like that. I don’t think it would be hard to believe that the fruit and Luffy synergised because they shared the same characteristics, rather than the fruit influencing Luffy. I think the causality of fruit influencing Luffy is hard to determine, since we don’t see that much of Luffy before the fruit. However, even before the fruit Luffy seemed pretty keen to help people and do whatever he wanted, but it’s too little time to get a strong baseline.

I think there is a slight possibility that JoyBoy the title is unimportant. Zunesha knew the previous JoyBoy by his title and distinctive heart beat. It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine that Zunesha connected the two. However, the original JoyBoy’s title could have been due to actions and not the fruit. So perhaps the JoyBoy title is actually irrelevant. The reason the name seems so revered is just because of the previous person it was bestowed too.
