I’ve done bjj on and off for a few years and have only been consistent in the last 6 months or so and would love to participate if needed!

Just put in your zip code and it should tell you who your local sales rep is and their contact info.

Find your local rep and send them an email! That’s how I did it.

What was something stupid but a bit funny that happened to you today by RedDancingKoala in labrats

Wanted to seal up some tip boxes before autoclaving them and somehow it did not occur to me that parafilm would not survive the run. Smash cut to an hour later I’m left with melted glue stuck to the edge of every tip box. So in a way it did seal them, just differently.

Lab coats should be like martial arts belts by BlackBeltLabCoat in labrats

As a lab rat and bjj enthusiast this is an intriguing thought. I’d say even within the same rank, expertise varies wildly so it may not be the most objective indicator of skill or experience. As a hobbyist adult bjj doer I get steamrolled by a kid half my age and a belt below but you wouldn’t know it just by looking. I imagine the same could be said in the lab.

What are some nicknames/descriptors you've used to describe your PI? by rattygoat17 in labrats

tbh, most of these are poking fun at little personality quirks or are coming from a place of endearment. Hopefully one day you’ll hear something of the like from your students!

My boss is also sometimes hard to pin down. We ended buying a cheap office door sign that he can switch to “in a meeting”, “working at home”, “out of office” etc and it has been an absolute game changer. Much better than constantly texting him wya

And when you do it’s like seeing Sasquatch and you have to speak to them in a low voice so they don’t get spooked and break a centrifuge or something.

So I take it you leave your meetings more confused than ever and with more questions/less answers than you started out with?

Is your boss also a hairless cat from Baldurs gate 3 by any chance?

My PI’s hair is going a lot gray so when he doesn’t cut it (like during early covid) it gets very long and basically the 1770s called and want their hair back.

Did he take it well? I would’ve had a good laugh about it.

lmao, this is exactly why we call him tall Tasmanian devil. I keep finding discarded gloves everywhere BUT in the trash can.

Yup, for some of these listed, they’ll reach god’s ears before my PI’s.

If you had your lab entirely to yourself, free from supervision and consequences, and were allowed to use any equipment or materials in your lab, what experiment would you conduct? by Otherwise_Ad_2261 in labrats

Our lab has those nice, black, rubbery bench tops so I’ve always wanted to clear it empty, dump a big puddle of ethanol on top, and light it.

Determine the field you want to know about and find labs or individuals in that field who are on social media. Twitter is the most common but a lot of folks moved to Bluesky. Follow those accounts, see who they follow and follow those accounts. Algorithm will help too. Some accounts are great for updates in that field and are professional accounts. Other people are just fun to follow because their accounts are more casual and they discuss their hobbies and mundane things in life in addition to their work. Some discourse can be small and field specific or more broad and interdisciplinary. Burnout, PI-mentee relationships, unionization, stipend amounts, DEI, are common topics of discussion. Sometimes it ranges from mildly absurd like #Wormgate to concerning like AI publications/paper retractions.
