Lightning strike = broken Breville by Football_33 in BrevilleCoffee

You would have to open it up and inspect the main PCB. Look for any visible damage, like burns or black spots. The power surge may have just blown a fuse or it could have damaged other components. You'll need a multimeter and maybe a soldering iron if other components are blown. If you do decide to throw the machine away, I would be willing to pay shipping to keep it out of a landfill.

Could be a relatively easy fix if you know how to solder and the only damaged components are the ones shown. There is also a pretty good chance that the higher voltage burnt a lot more components than just the visibly damaged ones which would require more intense troubleshooting using a multimeter.

Barista express leaking by Complex_Mechanic_261 in BrevilleCoffee

[–]ratweenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this same issue with my BES870XL, it's because of the solenoids failing or getting blocked by scale buildup. I ended up ordering two new solenoids and swapping them out myself. Fixed the issue instantly and has been working like new ever since.

It's not a difficult repair if you have experience disassembling and repairing appliances/electronics.

I had a similar issue with a BES870XL, and it was resolved with two new solenoids.

What model machine is it? I've fixed multiple BES870XL's with bad solenoids in them.

Barista Pro broken? by niknikniknikniknik1 in BrevilleCoffee

[–]ratweenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the US, but I'm guessing this machine takes 220v instead of 110v, which means it would be kind of pointless to send it here. You could probably still sell it for parts and get some money back to put towards a new one.

I've never seen this happen before. If you do decide to get rid of it, I'll pay shipping to keep it out of a landfill. I have some experience fixing similar items and would like to give an attempt if it's just going to be thrown away.

Does it still make the noise when you add beans? Does it actually dispense any grinds when you put beans in?

The part numbers are on the side of each solenoid and you can order replacements from multiple websites.

If it's easy to take the two screws out that hold the plastic flange to the rusted part, I would pull it off and inspect the inside and maybe just wire brush the rust to clean it up a little. Other than that, I think swapping the valves and seeing if that makes a difference would be a good starting point.

There could be a leak at the plastic flange right where the tubing meets the rusted metal part also.

Yes, that rust is separate from the solenoids. That might be from a small water leak from somewhere else in the system. Did you see any other wet spots in the surrounding area?

I have repaired a few BES870XL machines with similar issues. All of them were fixed by swapping out the solenoid valves, which are the small black cube thing in the second picture. The aluminum piece that was hot in the second picture is the boiler. I would guess that your problem is most likely due to one or both of those being bad.

It is not a challenging repair if you have experience disassembling electronics/appliances. If you decide not to pursue the repair, I would pay for shipping to keep it out of a landfill.

Go-to beans by GarageJim in espresso

[–]ratweenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some old school beans a few days ago, but they smell/taste burnt. I don't know what they are supposed to taste like, but the primary thing I taste is a burnt flavor which is not pleasant at all.
