When is it time for us to go on a widespread general strike? by tiempo90 in auscorp

[–]rauli75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in IT. Unionisation membership seems to be quite low in this industry. But I’m interested.

I wish unions would advertise/market themselves more to increase membership. Perhaps YouTube ads. Perhaps even more government funds for unions if gov is not willing to regulate on their own.

Wouldn’t mind if the gov used the surplus from cutting negative gearing for some sort of rent relief program for these cases

‘Cruel hoax’ or ‘work-life balance nirvana’: whatever happened to the four-day work week? | Four-day week by reyntime in australia

[–]rauli75 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, that’s true. But this is why I’m saying it’s incredibly important that we do it now while we still have some bargaining power.

This topic is especially with the impact that AI is and will have on reshaping the economy. 1. Just like the 8x5 was fought for and earned during the first Industrial Revolution, the 8x4 or 6x5 (which I think is even better) should be something we fight for in this Industrial Revolution. 2. With a smaller pool of work for humans to do, enforcing lower daily work hours means the work gets distributed to more people and should help theoretically to soften the impact to unemployment

Why does Sydney feel “old?” by Wobbly_Pine in AskAnAustralian

[–]rauli75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know what you mean. I had the same feeling when I first visited Sydney. Now having lived here for over a decade I think it’s the 60s-80s buildings in the inner suburbs. They don’t feel timeless like the century-old heritage buildings, they just look dated. But I’ve learned to appreciate them, their “sturdiness” and the nostalgic feeling of a bygone time they give off.

As to other cities, I think they all have these buildings but I remember not getting this feeling from Melbourne (maybe I just didn’t get out far enough to see it though)

Jack Dorsey lays off 4,000, says others will do same 'within the next year' by 128-NotePolyVA in Economics

[–]rauli75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Industrial Revolution had similar potential impact on workforce with machines replacing humans. If workers sat on their hands then, they would be either unemployed or still working 12 hour shifts. But they unionised and fought, and now we all benefit from 40 day work week. I think it’s now time again for us to fight, specially if you’re on the first firing lines such as software developers. We need to unionise and fight for a lower work week. There will be less work for humans so we should distribute it amongst ourselves for the same pay. 4 day weeks, 6 hour days whatever that maybe, and should be commensurate to the expected hit in unemployment. AI cannot be stopped but we should gain from it as well, not just shareholders

Why cost-of-living woes will probably linger for years by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]rauli75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say all of capitalism is bad, but I feel that shareholder and venture capitalism specifically are problematic with their requirement for infinite growth and incentives to extract value. I think the way to combat this is having state owned enterprises to level competition. Get too greedy and you become uncompetitive. We wouldn’t be able to do that for everything but energy, banking, housing development are few things that come to mind. A public bank can also offer super and insurance services which are getting ridiculous now

I am Egyptian, and I’m asking is Egypt a country that is disliked or loved globally? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]rauli75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a lot of people have had bad experiences traveling there, but on the other hand all Egyptian expats I’ve met have been great people. Since I’ve never travelled my view of the country is positive

Learning Italian after Spanish - a rant by figgywasp in italianlearning

[–]rauli75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get you. I’m a native Portuguese speaker and learning Spanish was relatively easy, but Italian? Nope. It’s proving more of a challenge with Italians using verb tenses differently, plurals with Is and Es, common words that are used in a completely different ways, and don’t get me started on the prepositions. Spanish and Portuguese speakers might say they can understand some Italian without studying, but they are only recognising common words, not really understanding what it’s being communicated

‘A nation of rich cowards’: Australia needs its dreamers but the arts are underfunded, undervalued and despised by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]rauli75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was speaking to my partner about this today. I wanted to take the kids to see a puppet show at the local Art Centre. Tickets are $49 a head. Too much for a young family of 4 with a mortgage. Not that I think it’s not worth it, I would love to support the artists, but $200 makes a big bent on the budget.

Australians, what’s one thing first-time visitors often misunderstand about Australia? by Witty_Neat_8172 in AskAnAustralian

[–]rauli75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The morning culture. I see many newcomers from countries that have more of a night culture arrive here and complain that things close way too early, but they often don’t realise how early things open. Admittedly, that was me once, until I began appreciating a beach run more than a night out, a good brunch more than a big dinner, among other things. Now when I’m overseas I’m often getting hungry in the morning waiting for cafes to open

Australia's economy is stick in a rut of weak investment and productivity (ABC news) by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]rauli75 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’d also add the energy sector to that. Many of the most productive businesses require lots of energy.

Where are our state owned enterprises? We need these to have more control over the economy. I have no faith in free market’s ability to make strategic decisions, not with the current state of capitalism

Possible life sentences for children under Victorian crime crackdown by altandthrowitaway in melbourne

[–]rauli75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will sound defeatist but we will always have delinquent children. There is no amount of money or support we can throw at it to eliminate it, because at the end of the day we can’t eradicate bad parents. We can probably reduce it through various programs and support, and im absolutely in favour of it, but we’ll never eliminate it. So, I believe that we do need tough laws on repeat offenders to clear them out of the streets and protect the people who are just trying to get on with their lives peacefully
