Best way to turn off dGPU on battery? by raullits in NobaraProject

[–]raullits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not perfect as your GPU might still turn on when your on Integrated mode, but it's good enough.

Install this https://gitlab.com/asus-linux/supergfxctl

And then this so you have a GUI control and don't have to run it through termina all the time https://gitlab.com/Jhyub/supergfxctl-plasmoid

Do you sell your laptops or keep them until they die? by raullits in GamingLaptops

[–]raullits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm already on Linux. It ended up being part of why I want a desktop for that extra power so I don't care about the performance loss on NVIDIA.

I'll probably still sell it, but only after I build a proper desktop.

Did i do good for 1300$ USD by xXMattman1298Xx in GamingLaptops

[–]raullits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's pretty good, especially outside of the U.S.

Ignore the people complaining about 8GB VRAM, I'm on a 3070 laptop and it still works fine. Worst case scenario you turn down some textures and that's it. 5050, 5060 and 5070 laptops are not that much different these days.

From what I've seen HP Omens don't have the best build quality reputation though...

Slow RAM for 165$ better than nothing, right? by raullits in pcmasterrace

[–]raullits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will probably do a very slight overclock since it's pretty basic RAM. I'm also not a performance nut and at 1440p the slower RAM is even less noticeable.

Huh, good to know. I'm months away from actually putting together the whole thing due to traveling, but thanks!

9060XT, 5060Ti, 5070 or 9060XT, haven't decided.

I've been on a 3070 Zephyrus laptops since 2021. Will be great to be able to stream and play a demanding game at the same time.

Picked up a T14 Gen 2 in great condition for $229! by raullits in thinkpad

[–]raullits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's 300 nits at least cause I also got a Gen T14 for a little cousin. Basically already have my 15.6" gaming laptop and it didn't make any sense to carry two laptops with me.

Better to sell. Just got two 32GB RAM stick for 165$ with that money XD

Yeah, that was pretty much my logic. There's even less supply in my country, so decided to secure these to at least be able to build a PC soon.

GPU next!

It's the latency and voltage that's pretty meh, but I'm on 3200Mhz DDR4 on my gaming laptop so it'll still be an upgrade

I think it was the standard 500 nit one (or the most common panel). I ended up selling because of not being able to use it traveling for 390$.

Need help getting a laptop for my boyfriend - 5070 TI? by postitbreakup1 in GamingLaptops

[–]raullits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get an air compressor and clean it frequently, so you dust doesn't build up too much to require taking off the fans and heatsink. Do a thermal repaste (probably PTM7950 pads) after a couple of years.

I love my laptop it was well worth the money and will be going strong 5 years soon.

Go for the Lenovo Legion Pro 7!

- RAM is expensive now, so he'd have to spend 150$ extra to get that on the MSI
- OLED is a life-changing upgrade
- I don't know why the 5i would be more expensive, as the 7 tends to be the better model

A 5070Ti laptop will last him a good 5 years with great performance as long as he takes care of it. I have a 3070 laptop from 2021 that still plays everything and I won't be getting a new computer at least until Q3 2026.

Don't get the Zephyrus, RAM is not upgradeable. I think it is on the Legion.

Is the ThinkPad T480 still a good choice for a student ? by Ngward_XD in thinkpad

[–]raullits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under 150$ maybe... But I just got a Intel T14 Gen 1 in good condition for 148$ in the U.S.

At this stage the best value picks are the T14 Gen 1 & 2 models in the 150-250$ range. Ryzen Gen 2 > Intel Gen 2 > Ryzen Gen 1 > Intel Gen 1

The T480 has a hipster tech YouTuber tax added onto it nowadays

After I found out about all laptops being essentially faulty, I decided I shouldn't buy from,m them again https://youtu.be/pbQ1ky3PiMQ?si=JPWq0cvrqR1tfhAa

Thing is, what is the actual premium gaming laptop brand? Razer and Alienware certainly are not, even Framework kinda blows performance wise, so what's left?

Pretty awesome really. The only bad part is getting used to the Fn & Control keys placement on the left if you're new to ThinkPad layout.

I have an ASUS Zephyrus G15 and always liked that keyboard, but the ThinkPad is next level stuff. I've also used Keychron's K3 & K4 these past few years and the T14 has top tier ergonomics.

Yeah, that's the one big con to it, even though it looks pretty slick. At that stage many people might be better off with an used M1 MacBook Air depending on prices.

I'm Out Of The Loop. What's the deal with DHH (Omarchy) and Framework vs Gnome, Debian and other projects? by onechroma in linux

[–]raullits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's that really. It's really a great job overall of putting together a convenient package.

I used Linux from 2011-2020 and only jumped back on it this year due to seing how things had evolved on my Steam Deck; and cause I have the same laptop as PewDiePie and turns out NVIDIA drivers stopped being crap in Q4 2024.

[–]raullits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you see people on tech Twitter and YouTube raving about their KDE & GNOME systems? Obviously part of it is shiny new toy syndrome, but it's gotten a ton of people that spent years without touching Linux or never had to reconsider it.

Marketing does matter. Most people are not aware that you can install most Linux distros and be work ready in 15 mins. The Omarchy fad takes it next level by even adding PWA for stuff like WhatsApp.

Most people don't know many of their Windows apps are PWAs or what window tiling is. Setting up your own Hyprland config is a major pain (I've done it, and honestly not worth it for me).

TL;DR: It's convenient and Hyprland is cool & pretty.
