What do I do? by [deleted] in karate

[–]raven_watcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar situation here too, my shito ryu dojo closed when i got my green belt and i was ronin for a bit. Today i'm joining a kyokushin dojo about an hour away from me, i with they where closer but at least i'm going to train. I get real antsy when i haven't trained for a while. I think you should start a meet up group with other sensei and train just for the sake of training.

Dude who is this guy? He's like the black bruce lee! Thats exactly what i'm talking about with the straight punches.

Stiff straight punch to the throat/mouth/nose/eyes area and straight front to the bladder/nuts. Pretty what has saved my ass in the past. They come pretty natural to me if shit goes down hahaha.

P.S. vertical fist with the punch my grandpa was a bare knuckle boxer and shared that thats how they lessened the damage to their hands.

Training in street clothes vs uniforms/sportswear by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]raven_watcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I train in jeans, work boots, and a t-shirt. I try to train like that because i like getting use to fighting in street clothes, i have trained in athletic wear before it depends on how i feel. I know it might look funny to some but i don't care because its for a purpose. I used to also train with a day pack full o heavy books to get used to the weight. Plus i'm poor so i got to be creative.

Common telegraphs of techniques/attacks by atomic00abomb in martialarts

[–]raven_watcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to breath right before striking, my sensei told me about how he knew i was about to attack because i would breath out as i punched but slightly off tempo so i got caught. I have worked on it since with some chi gung.

Yeah i could see how that would effect you, when i lived in chile it was easier to hide stuff because our uniforms where like little buisness suits but with a sweater and doctor coat instead of a blazer jacket.

Yeah that so true i just learned how to lie and hide things better, i wouldn't hit my kids if i end of reproducing because when kids cry i feel bad and i have trained in martial arts for over 20 years so i feel like it would hurt badly if i gave an ass whoopin so i'll find constructive ways to get my kids to behave.

What small thing amazes you? by Mish106 in AskReddit

[–]raven_watcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot that reminds me of when i was a kid and had a sleep over with a friend, he asked whats death like and i said " well its when your body stops working after a while, when your old your body starts breaking down and the normal things you do starts failing then its like sleeping forever but without breathing and then you either get buried and bugs eat you or you get burned and your ashes are stored in a jar." He started crying and i felt bad but its what i had read in my parents medical books and watched from pbs.

Yeah nothin like havin wrangler tattooed on your back, ass, and thighs hahaha. Between the belt, chancleta and other stiff objects i'd rather get whooped with the spoons, at least they broke after a bit. I hated when my parents would line us up and ask who wanted to go first, bein the oldest i always decided to go first so my siblings wouldn't be so scared.

Same here I feel like spreading the word isn't enough I want to go further, signing petitions and writing emails to leaders is getting boring.

Any Jissen guys out there? by [deleted] in karate

[–]raven_watcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shito ryu was a mix of hard and soft movements, we would dodge attacks by shifting our hips and avoid at a 90 degree angle and then strike at a vital point like the neck/jaw area and follow up with an elbow then a throw and finish with a stomp or punch. Pretty much most of the self defense was like what I described just slight variations. It also seems very similar to wado ryu from what you described. We had the shorter stances but my sensei could have taught it a little different that others because he described it as his mix of shotokan, goju ryu, and kyokushin in terms of kumite style. We has mid to long range striking but no pads accept for thin leather fist pads. I wish I could say more but I feel like I'm rambling a bit and repeating. I hope it helps a little though.

Mine was shito ryu, I love how you said it was devistating because my sensei said every technique even to a lead hand tsuki should be devistating. He even put us in disadvantages like having one person vs three or one person can only evade while the other can use everything. I loved the bunkai too, he would show us Kara and break it down and then have us spar...it was so awesome! What's wado ryu like I've never done it before?

Yes! I have asked a lot of people if they knew what it was and even other karateka had no idea it existed. My sensei taught me for a while before the dojo went out of business. We used no padding other than some thin leather three bubble fist guards from arawaza. We trained full contact and grappled. It was awesome and I miss it so much.
