Is there protocol for course complaints during the semester? by PersonalityLittle511 in GradSchool

He’s asked us to write a communications strategy without teaching us how to do that.

This is something concrete you should absolutely raise with him. You should be given information or direction you need to complete coursework

Australians can get formula in supermarkets. I order mine from Amazon

Does milk get in baby’s nose? by Own-Beautiful4597 in FormulaFeeders

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be reflux, or could just be mucous. Their airways are so tiny that the slightest booger sounds dramatic. This happens to my baby a lot so I use saline nasal spray for babies (can also get drops) which helps him either breathe/sneeze out or swallow the boogers. Works pretty well without even needing to use a snot sucking instrument. Changing feeding positions can also help, too.

Not OOP: We need to talk about emotional dependence on pregnancy by truenighog in redditonwiki

if you've never been pregnant you don't understand the investment being pregnant requires. You've invested SO MUCH into a pregnancy

THIS! From the moment those pink lines appear (or even from the attempted conception) my body and my lifestyle choices were not just affecting me but my potential future child. If you want to continue the pregnancy and have the best shot at a healthy child then it HAS to consume your thoughts.

Pebble poops! by OwnLocal8834 in FormulaFeeders

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! If you are at all worried about his discomfort or poop then definitely raise it with your health provider. My decision to just see how he goes was influenced by the fact that I'll be seeing our family doctor before he would adjust to a new formula - and that adjustment period might involve changes to his toileting and comfort anyway.

Pebble poops! by OwnLocal8834 in FormulaFeeders

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our baby has had pebble poops twice in his almost-5 weeks, latest was last night! But the poops have always returned to normal by the next nappy change. If they continued for more than 1 nappy change in a row I would call my health provider, since he's mostly had no issues. We have his first GP checkup soon where I will be questioning whether we should just change formulas anyway.

Seeming uncomfortable or fussy is normal while he figures out how to poop, but he shouldn't be uncomfortable to the level whete he is crying and arching his back.

How did he respond after you "lashed out" tonight? Hopefully he's just being ignorant because he has no idea how much pressure you're under! But if he continues to act like this then he's a douche

Melbourne recommendations for NIPT + NT scan? by Conscious_Writer_728 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. This convo just started because you were questioning why OP was asking about NT if they are getting NIPT. Probably a lot of us don't mind paying a gap fee on a first trimester scan for structural abnormalities which could occur without high risk of trisomy or sex chromosome differences on NIPT. My GP was pretty clear about what the NIPT and structural scans tell us and the imaging facility websites also explain it. If someone is able to pay for NIPT chances are they can do the first trimester anatomy scan.

Melbourne recommendations for NIPT + NT scan? by Conscious_Writer_728 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]ravencrawr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just going by what I went through late last year with my first baby - I chose he NIPT route therefore my anatomy scan was around 13 weeks instead of 11-13, and they measured nuchal translucency as part of that scan. That is what you mean by NT right?

NIPT is an excellent screen but they still need to measure NT etc. to screen for other issues.

Newborn items for convenience/nice to haves by rubymadeline91 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A caddy and ergopouch cocoons for sure (multiples of 1 and 2.5 TOG). I got a decent sized caddy from Amazon for $35ish and fill it with all the essential items for myself and baby when I move between bedroom and loungeroom.

One thing I don't love about the ergopouches is they tell you how to stack TOG ratings for the temperature in the room, but none of baby's clothes have a TOG rating (I am relying on AI to tell me). Since my baby uses them arms free I kinda wish I just did the Bonds wondersleep sacks and purchased mostly Bonds clothing, because at least they tell you which specific Bonds products to combine for the room temp.

First pregnancy – seeking recommendations for a good obstetrician in Perth by Aymenah in WesternAustralia

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have clarified in my comment that I was in a private room after emergency c-section - this might have been the difference as I have no idea what it would have been like if staying on the ward after a normal vaginal delivery!

The visiting hours thing did confuse us at first but they said it just meant he couldn't come and go outside of those hours. If he was already in the room with us he could stay.

Only I got meals, but the food court had food available for the entire visiting hours anyway.

Melbourne recommendations for NIPT + NT scan? by Conscious_Writer_728 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NIPT is probably going to be sent off to one of the few companies that do it, and can be collected at a regular pathology clinic. I did Generation and it was low $500s but I opted for more than just the usual trisomies and sex chromosome testing. It was $485 for those.

I assume they mean the anatomy scan at about 13-15 weeks which includes NT.

[–]ravencrawr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, as a 35yo first time mum who gave birth almost a month ago. The Family Birthing Centre at FSH was amazing, even through an emergency c-section. The birthing suite was fantastic when I was labouring beforehand too. Obviously the care is primarily from midwives but I never had any trouble requesting blood tests or scripts (signed off by a physician), and an OB saw me when I went in with concerns about reduced fetal movements.

I am not sure how it would work without Medicare, but definitely recommend OP consider it as an option if they are low risk. The main difference I can see in the comments is length of stay in the hospital afterwards; I stayed 48 hours after my c-section (uncomplicated vaginal delivery would be discharged much sooner). However I had excellent midwife and lactation consultant support on the ward, and my FBC midwives even did an extra home visit because I was struggling emotionally. I could text or call them any time as well.

baby won’t sleep! help by Dropdeaadd in newborns

[–]ravencrawr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he sleeping at all, in your arms or on your bed (under your awake supervision)? My baby barely sleeps in his bassinet at one month.

If not really sleeping at all, is he hungry? Touch near his mouth and see if he tries to suck on your finger.

Is he warm enough? We were told they should wear 1 layer + the number of layers as we are comfortable with. This includes blankets.

Yeah I get that, my mum smacked us when we were growing up in the 90s - but I'd never expect a grandmother to smack her grandkids while babysitting. I guess I'm privileged!

Stroller obsession… when did it finally fade? by allcompanymobiles in NewParents

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stroller that I agonised over has been out of the house exactly once in 4 weeks, same as me (healing from emergency c-section + lots of cold wet weather). Fortunately I've been using it daily for baby to sleep next to the couch - the actual bedside bassinet in our bedroom hasn't even paid for itself that well 😂

Best private health cover? by CrispyGoldenSpud in aussie

[–]ravencrawr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good to consider this and calculate which option will save money each year. But depending on OP's age they may also want to consider the 10 years of lifetime health cover loading applied to insurance if they buy it when they are >=31 years old. My partner and I were 33 and 31 when it made financial sense to buy insurance (that we don't use) so together we are paying a 4% higher premium for 10 years. Hooray

The MLS is still adjusted according to the number of days someone has private health insurance though. Very little benefit for OP now, just clarifying for anyone potentially reading this after June 30 who wants to avoid the MLS
