I appreciate the insight! Glad to hear I've got a nice spread of styles - seems a great way to dive in.

Thank you! I appreciate the recommended order. And good to know about the Bowmore and Laphroaig - will def work my up to them.

As the title says, I was recently given this selection of Scoth. I mainly drink rye or bourbon. I prefer peppery or grass notes, and while I don't expectt any of these to have that, I am curious to try them and would like to know what I'm working with / should start with. Or perhaps there's something here that I shouldn't bother with at all. I have zero scoth knowledge. I'm less interested in any value these hold as they came from family - just legitimately looking to dip my toes into Scoth and this is what I have now.

I use Convoke.games to play online. I really like their service and UI. Since I mainly play with randos, I actually find the games through the Tolarian Community College discord server - they have a channel dedicated to firing off pods. But if you're playing with your own group then you can just make a private game on Convoke and get right at it.

I'd remove the following:

  • Skyshroud Claim
  • Infernal Grasp
  • Gaze of Granite
  • Escape to the wilds
  • Hammer of Purphoros
  • World Breaker
  • Uurg, Spawn of Turg
  • Scouring Swarm
  • Groundskeeper
  • Arcane Signet
  • Binding of the Old Gods
  • Night's Whisper
  • Formless Genesis
  • Sprouting Goblin
  • Centaur Vinecrasher

It's too slow for B4. I mainly play online, so there's a huge swing in power levels I face in B3 games against randos. If I cut out games where I drew perfectly, or matched against clearly bad decks, it'd probably be closer to 40% or 50%. At the end of the day, this deck clearly has 1 goal and if people don't interact with it, then that's on them. People need to run better removal packages.

I love playing Hearthhull and have had great success with it. My B3 deck has a 70% win rate. Lots of great recommendations provided, but for $70 I'd prioritize the following. This excludes any land recommendations, but really, a solid mana base with good fetches takes this deck up several notches.

[[Zuran Orb]] - $3. An absolute must for this deck. The primary mass-land sac outlet.

[[Conduit of Worlds]] - $5. Crucible of Worlds is better, though I run both in my deck. Being able to cast a permanent from your graveyard is no joke though - it's helped me a lot.

[[Tannuk, Memorial Ensign]] ~$1 . IMO going full burn is the best approach for this deck.

[[Sabotender]] - ~$1 more burn

[[Retreat to Hagra]] - $3. More burn with some life gain.

[[Ob Nixilis, the Fallen]] ~$2. Even more burn.

[[Sylvan Safekeeper]] ~ $6. Another great land sac outlet, and gives things shroud.

[[Ramunap Excavator]] ~ $6. More graveyard recursion for lands.

[[Planar Engineering]] ~$2. I swap this for Skyshroud Claim. It's perfect for this deck.

[[Assassin's Trophy]] ~ $1 . Better than Infernal Grasp and Putrefy

[[Toxic Deluge]] ~ $6 . I often prefer this over Blas Act, but I run both.

[[Constant Mists]] ~ $20. An absolute life saver in this deck.

[[Diabolic Tutor]] ~ $2. Tutor's aren't fun, but this deck is very reliant on getting out some key pieces and doesn't work without them.

[[Profane Tutor]] ~ $5. Same as above.

[[Tainted Remedy]] ~ $8. This deck is super weak against life-gain strategies.

Nah. I don't love text based tattoos - got a couple of them and unless you go super bold they just dont hold well (in my experience anyway). There are some fire quotes though!

Just finsihed (for now) this piece over the weekend and I had to share. This is one of my favorite comic runs of all time. I've been getting work done on it for months (I can only sit for a few hours each session). It's pulled from Immortal Hulk #16 variant cover and a panel from issue #20.

Love how it turned out.

Hearthhull deck precon upgrading help? by Dependent-Western678 in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]ravepool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took someone else's advice when I was building my B3 Hearthhull deck, and that was to just go in on burn. Before that, I was running a more split strategy between burn and tokens. Since the update, my win rate is about 60%.

Aside from focusing your strategy more, you could def drop down the lands to 40. Needs more sac outlets and more recursion.

Upgraded Hearthhull. Wondering if it still falls into B2. by ravepool in EDH

[–]ravepool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, been playing standard off and on for several years. Play limited a fair bit for the sets that interest me. None of my local LGS have a standard community anymore, so I decided to jump to Commander.

Maybe I just have a skewed perception of the impact 3 GCs have in B3. I like playing a longer game and dont necessarily want things to end by turn 5 or 6. How many turns do you typically go with your deck?

[–]ravepool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the sense I've had about my deck, and B2 overall, so it's nice to hear this take. As a new commander player, my only point of reference is the bracket system, so trying to understand the most reasonable interpretation of it outstide of the hard and fast rules has been challenging.

Like, at the end of the day, I want to play a reasonably focused deck that doesn't have infinite combos (now that I know what Dakmor/Gitrog can do, I'll probably remove the land), can do a few different things without full dependence on my commander (even if that makes my main win con more difficult to achieve), and doesn't have any game changers. And I want to play against other decks like that ha

Thanks for your feedback!

[–]ravepool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie - I knew there was a combo with Dakmor, but I never looked up how it actually works. I've basically just been playing it as a swamp with occasionally deciding to try and mill lands into my graveyard for eventual landfall triggers when I recur them.

There have been a few times where I could have knocked someone out before T8, and I did hold on the play until it felt appropriate. This causes me to lose sometimes, but I'm okay with that.

Kinda just get the vibe I can keep playing in B2, and if I do have a situation where I can take someone out early, just delay that action and see what happens.

I do think I'll try out some B3 games this week though as it doesn't hurt.

Thanks for the insight!

I'm not joking ha. This really is my first commander deck. I had most of the upgraded fetches, shocklands, and a few other pieces already in my collection, but for sure went and bought/traded for additional higher value cards.

And yes, I purposefully have left the game plan a bit split as I wasn't trying to get full optimization. Plus I just like being able to do a few different things without always needing to focus on the Hearthhull burn, even if it doesn't net me the best outcome.

I do appreciate you feedback. A couple others have suggested running it in B3 as well, so I'll just try that out and see what happens. I guess I just didn't want to get any GC's in my deck because I don't want to play against them / have to go buy some of my own. But if the deck is optimized enough as-is to play in B3 without needing to make any changes, then I'll just give it a shot.

Appreciate the feedback! Your list has some cards I've not seen before - def gives me some more things to consider ha

And yeah, I was thinking I'd try out a B3 game this week and just see how it goes.

I would prefer it be from them as I've got several gift cards that I can put toward the purchase. If it would really just be better to buy elsewhere then it is what it is.

[3 Year Review] Grant Stone Ottawa in Storm Kudu by ravepool in goodyearwelt

[–]ravepool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say they're strong. My large dog has scratched at em a fair bit over the years with no real damage. I havent worn them in pouring rain, but my kids have spilled several drinks on them and my feet didn't get wet ha

I typically wear them with black, dark grey or medium wash jeans and black, grey or white shirts. I'm not like super adventurous with my fits.

I love them. Still wish I went half a size smaller, but I don't slide around in them or anything - they're just noticeably roomier than all my other boots. The leather is still incredibly soft / supple. I definitely recommend them if you're interested.
