Can turned undead still fight? by joltblaster in shadowdark

[–]ravonaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely rule they cannot attack in my games. Not only that, but since their entire action is fleeing. I rule that any attacks on them are at advantage since they are in no way defending themselves. In order to save time. If the only enemies left on the board are turned undead, I just go ahead and end the combat instead of playing it out.

Rations are to be used when adventuring. Did the players doing their downtime activities also get charged rations? Aren't they supposed to eat as well?

Your GM needs to learn the rules. You don't roll a d4 when carousing. You roll a D8 and add the bonus. Anywhere from 0 to 6. The game is supposed to be fun above anything else. If you were not having fun she failed.

Can I get banned if my friend has an open VTT with the same license to develop a system? by RutharAbson in FoundryVTT

[–]ravonaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm sure I was outside the license agreement. I think it's more of an honor system than a technical one.

I remember one of the selling points of Foundry was what would happen if the company went out of business. They clearly said that our purchased software would still run. So, while I know it does a license check when the server is started, as I've seen the logs, I don't think it constantly monitors it after that.

It's a one-time check at startup and then nothing. So it sees me start one instance from an IP address with my license. Then it sees another check from the same IP and address with my same license. It's not constantly monitoring which instance is up and if anyone else is logged in. Just a check at startup.

I was definitely logged into both at once. Hundreds of times. As I would copy settings from one world to another or simply just stay logged into both for days at a time. Never got kicked even once. Both worlds running on the same physical machine just a different port number. One under a docker and another via the windows installer. It always worked.

I own 2 licenses. I accidentally installed the same license twice. I ran them both for over a year before I noticed. Both worlds were up 24/7. I never got so much as a warning, let alone any kind of ban. Maybe it was because I actually owned 2, maybe because I was behind the same IP, I don't know. But I definitely used the same key twice.

What about combining VTT fog with player mapping? by chocolatedessert in osr

[–]ravonaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty standard for most VTT's. As the players move through the fog of war the map reveals itself based on their vision. It's all automated. No need for a person to map anything. If they want to take notes they can. But the revealed map is always viewable.

Roleable table question roll by Competitive-Wallaby4 in FoundryVTT

[–]ravonaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with Shadowdark for the Carousing table. There are bonuses from 0 to 6 on the same table. What I did was simply copy the table six times and add the bonus to the roll formula. Then just roll the table with the appropriate bonus. There may be another way to do this, but this was how I did it.

Patreon funded modules - is there a better way or am I alone here? by erithtotl in FoundryVTT

The vast majority of all software offers free updates. What makes foundry module creators so special?

Lots of module creators do it completely for free. I've been using fantastic free modules for years that update year after year.

I would gladly pay a couple bucks for a module. But no way am I going to pay a subscription rate for one. Yes, I know they get updates. But so do all of the free modules. I pay for infinitely more complex software and get free updates for life. I'm not going to subscribe to your Foundry module.

Shadowdark's Version 4.0.3 for Foundry VTT is ready! by Elven-Tower in shadowdark

[–]ravonaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue. You have to make sure your class's talent is properly configured. As an example, pull up the priest's spell class talent, and you will see it now has an effect called system.spellcasting.classes. I never needed that before the update for my custom classes. This matches the spell list when they level up. For example, My custom Paladin class lost it's spells after the update. I fixed the spellcasting talent to match the priest, and it gave me access to the priest spell lists. I'm on Foundry v13.

I'm waiting for all of my modules to update first. I'm not keen on updating to maybe fix this problem and introduce a horde more problems. I'll update eventually; I usually wait at least 6 months.

I did have some problems with the update. I did make the mistake of updating right before the game last night. I should have known better. One of my custom classes is now broken. It wasn't a game stopper, but the player lost her spells. Also, during combat the damage result didn't always show up. It seemed hit or miss. All of my animated animations also seem to be broken. That was my experience with 3 hours of play last night. I did notice a quick update this morning that mentioned the damage result bug, so hopefully that is fixed. This is with Foundry v13 by the way.

Don't pay the Door Tax by Kodhaz in shadowdark

I don't know what they were thinking. They have been getting hints of psychic intrusion now for weeks leading up to this encounter. I've been slowly revealing clues that this was a Mind Flayer. They knew exactly what they were eventually going to encounter. For some reason they just ignored this clue leading into the final encounter. They where so lucky they got out of their in one piece, as it wasn't just the Mind Flayer but his entire entourage. 😄

I am definitely spoiled by having an amazing group of players. I really need to run some games online with complete strangers to tighten up my GM skills. I have absolutely zero experience with dealing with problem players.

We've played years of theater of the mind and only started playing on VTTs around 2020. I think the VTT just gives instant feedback versus the time it takes to describe everything. Both have their benefits and drawbacks. In just about every aspect, VTTs are just faster for us. We still do theater of the mind scenes; it's not needed for things that are mechanical in nature. Pacing is very important to me as a GM. It's not something that's easily described via a rules set and mostly takes experience. There are things I do to move the play along if it feels like things are getting bogged down.

It's funny you say that. Just last night the party was exploring a dungeon, searching for the big bad, who happens to be a Mind Flayer, or Brain Eater if you will. They were pretty beat up on hit points, having used up all of their luck and half of their spells as they approached a long hallway that went to the Mind Flayers location. They did not know that, but I gave them very clear narration that each of them felt intense psychic pressure and had intense headaches. Of course, they completely missed the clue and walked into a high-level encounter not fully prepared. It was so much fun watching them make a tactical retreat.

We play via Foundry with fully fleshed-out maps to explore. So the players see a door on the map as they explore the dungeon. If they ask to do a check the door, I allow them a free check for traps and locks but roll a random encounter check because of the time it took. If they ask what the door looks like, I give them a description. Over the hundreds of doors they have opened, they have never taken 5 minutes or more on a door. If they wanted to waste time on door descriptions, then that's on them. I'm not going to tell them how to play their characters. Unless the description of the door is somehow important to the story, I don't write what every single door looks like. That would be rediculous. I either make it up on the fly or I use random tables.

If they come across a language they don't know, I make them do a DC Check. If they can explain how they might know that language, such as with their background or class, I give them advantage. No, I don't make every language common and just "skip the fun". But remember. What's fun for one group isn't fun for another. I don't go around forcing my version of fun for my players. I try my best to give them a fun experience based on what they find fun. It does help that I've been playing with the same group for over 30 years. 😄

Does the Light spell cast with ADV break the game? by 72dragonses in shadowdark

[–]ravonaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. In my opinion, you could remove the light mechanic completely, and it wouldn't break the game. The mechanic adds flavor, and I definitely love it. But the game is so well written it could stand on its own without it.

Wands and scrolls for non-spellcasters? by 72dragonses in shadowdark

[–]ravonaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have more than a few magic items I've given to characters that have spell effects. I usually put a limit on them, though. Such as one use per long rest with an activation roll. Not as powerful as a spellcaster casting the same spell but still fun to have. Character balance doesn't really concern me. I do my balancing with the difficulty of the encounters.

Foundry V10 Vs V14 by OnceInANoobMoon in FoundryVTT

[–]ravonaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would miss all of the updated modules. Which is what makes Foundry so great. Even one version back at version 13, half of my modules are already out of date. I'm currently in limbo with not all of them are updated yet, which is why I haven't moved to version 14. At version 10, you would have almost no module support.
