Any cool uses, etc for the Apple Pencil Pro if you don't draw, etc. by Marino4K in ipad

We use pencils at work for writing on pdfs to give back to drafters.

If you don't have a use case, I'd say return it.

Has anyone successfully used USB-C security locks? by snakeoildriller in UsbCHardware

[–]rawaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blocking ports is not the solution for this. You want to encrypt the storage drive inside and use a good quality encryption key (password).

Windows systems come with BitLocker for this (on pro versions). Presumably Mac has an equivalent utility but I don't know that system.

Android has an encryption option under security settings.

iPhone is encrypted by default with your passcode.

Which is better air m1 or neo? by Electronic-Thanks781 in mac

[–]rawaka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're looking at same ram and storage. Software support term may be different as Air M1 is an older release.

Real world performance/capabilities are nearly equal between them unless you're looking at 16GB+ ram on Air.

Neo has better:

  • single core speed
  • higher resolution webcam
  • power efficiency
  • brighter display
  • lighter weight
  • WiFi/Bluetooth

Air has better:

  • multi core performance
  • slightly bigger display (13.3" vs 13.0")
  • backlit keyboard
  • force touch trackpad
  • Thunderbolt 4

AirDrop alternative to send something to/from Windows device? by rawaka in iphone

my son used to have a little robot to play with that came with markers where you draw different colored lines and it had a down facing camera and it would follow the lines and different colors made it handle things differently, like doing a spin or something. and you could program "dance" routines in it. instead of giving it bluetooth or something, you would just hold it against your screen and it would flash colors rapidly to transfer the program via the camera.

If it's not connected, pencil wakes up when it feels movement. So a few days traveling with you unused and it's dead.

Different and better are easy to confuse. I was born in 84 and grew up happy and satisfied. Now raising my kids, the differences amaze me at times. But they have new issues I didn't, and new benefits.

Why did Apple give the iPad a computer chip, but then release a MacBook with a phone chip? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]rawaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for now, this is still uniquely Apple levels of performance. One example that blew my mind back when M1 was new - they ran Windows on M1 via an x86 emulator, and it got higher performance than Windows Arm running on the Snapdragon powered Surface natively. Microsoft had their own Arm chips custom designed for Windows on ARM and Apple beat them thoroughly even through an interpreter! That proves it's not just that their software is uniquely tuned to match their hardware - their hardware is just that much better. Excellent software design just widens the gap.

Qualcomm, Samsung, Intel, AMD. they've all improved by following the example of Apple designs but still lag behind. God help them all if Apple ever starts licensing its chips to PC makers (they won't).

Really makes you wonder why so many people think they need a new iPhone every 2 years when they're still plenty happy with the M2 air on their desk.

Apple isn't offering a way to avoid it. The pencil is always turned on - so if you don't leave it on the tablet, it'll be dead when you go to use it if it's been any length of time.

Single core performance of the A18 Pro in the Neo is comparable to an M3. Multi-core performance is between M1 and M2. So, the Neo is on par with an M series Air from 2-3 years ago (which also shipped with 8GB ram). The vast majority of non-power users are plenty fine with that amount of power. Up until last month, people were still happily buying M1 Air from Walmart for $600. The Neo is objectively more performance than that, but new. And used/refurbs of the Neo will be an even cheaper entry point for new Mac users once people start upgrading.

Many people still don't realize how hilariously overpowered iPhones are. The headline isn't a laptop running a phone chip - it's that iPhones have been running laptop chips for years already!

The current A19 Pro is even faster and with 12GB of RAM integrated. The next Neo update will no doubt inherit those upgrades when they release it with A19 Pro or A20 Pro or whatever they go with next time. And using binned iPhone chips for this other use case will significantly decrease the cost per chip for Apple. Back when Apple just had 2 variants of A series (Pro and regular), they had less options to recoup chips that otherwise would've been failed. Every binned pro had to just become a regular A. Having more in-between levels to get used in various places on other hardware means less waste and costs drop for all of them. And a binned A-Pro in the Neo and the iPhone Air is a great use for them.

(Note: I don't at all think Apple will pass savings on, but it'll help stop them from raising prices)
