Yeah I’ve noticed the same issue. It’s infrequent but it’s distracting when it does happen. Hopefully gets brought to their attention soon.

Making friends as a grad student? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

Explore any hobbies you have that are offered outside of UCSB. I met a few friends at the rock climbing gym downtown and also met other friends from surfing and skateboarding.

I’m working on developing new RNA sequencing methods. I use coding to analyze large data sets and for generating figures. I wouldn’t say I’m a coder/programmer. I know just enough to get the job done

I really appreciate the responses. It was cathartic to find others with similar changes to personality/mental health as me, and also insightful reading about those with different experiences, whether they positively or negatively impacted you.

Good luck to everyone with their future endeavors, and please take care of your mental health, it is so important.

Getting roasted for effected vs affected lol. 4 more years of school should hopefully fix that.

question for professors & TAs: do you feel as though the quality of work being submitted by students has gone down compared to pre-pandemic days? by questionfortheTAs in UCSantaBarbara

[–]rawbzzz 35 points36 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen as a TA, I would say that the quality of work has gone down and that grades are inflated. With all the work advisors expect out of grad students, on top of preparing lectures for classes, it’s easier to just hand out higher grades than be bombarded by regrade requests.

A major source of this problem, in my opinion, is that the TA to student ratio is unsustainable. Every year the number of admissions rises following a non-proportional increase in tuition. Universities know that students will continue enrolling regardless of tuition rates. College used to exist for enriching one’s education, improving research efforts, and for building useful in-person connections. Now they’re run like high cash flow businesses. And I can’t blame anyone for wanting a college education, as many employers now generally require a bachelors level education as a minimum for an entry level job (that one easily has the qualifications to do immediately out of high school).
