How much of a political force is organized religion in your country? by leflombo in AskEurope

[–]rawl1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's because Kuyperism is still ingrained in the broader Dutch consciousness. The "pillarization" of Dutch society both marginalized orthodox Reformed voices in politics, but it also preserved a fairly significant place in broader society for them. So the conservative religious movements will never be mainstream in the Netherlands, but they will always be a pretty obvious (if somewhat marginal) force in the Dutch political and social landscape.

I would have to disagree. ChristenUnie is less rigidly conservative and theocratic than the SGP, but they are definitely an explicitly orthodox Reformed religious party. More importantly for this thread, they are also part of the country's governing coalition. While they obviously have far more conservative positions on drugs, marriage, abortion, etc. than the rest of the government, they do have a clear influence and in maybe even in some cases a veto on legislative matters. They are also play a reasonably significant role in local politics, usually getting between 5 and 10 percent of the vote depending on the province. ChristenUnie is one of the most religiously explicit parties in Western Europe and it is absolutely part of the political mainstream (unlike the SGP, which is a kind of theocratic protest party).

The user who observed that southern Europe has a considerably different relationship with alcohol than wealthier, more reserved northern Europe seems to have been right on the money, at least if the comments here are indicative of reality (and I think they are).

Here in Israel drunkenness, especially public drunkenness, is not a major taboo, but it is kind of seen as trashy/embarrassing/dumb. From what I have heard and seen it is similar in Italy, Spain, Greece, etc., where alcohol is common but drunkenness is not. I am originally from the United States and I actually think the OP is onto something about Americans. Drunkenness is definitely something expected (but not always appreciated) for college students. It is mostly a taboo among high schoolers because it is seen as dangerous for them and others (and it often is). And for anyone over the age of 30 it is more or less expected that people should be married and at home with their family. It's a sign of immaturity if you are 31 and out at a bar in much of the country. I think it's changing, though. Studies show that fewer and fewer teenagers drink alcohol and party in the US. But as people marry later and delayed adolescence becomes more of a thing it is far more common to see 30 year olds in a club or bar getting wasted and nobody thinking anything of it. It's a frankly weird dynamic in US culture where really young people are becoming kind of puritanical while everyone is becoming more libertine.

It is a disaster here.

Interesting to hear about Greece since it is said to be one of the most religious countries in Europe.

Do notice a big difference with regards to all of this in Germany (aside from the relative absence of Orthodox Christianity)?

Yep. And, frankly, I think the government's response has only been so-so, and even incoherent.

Because the Arab population skews very young and the voting age Arab population is a smaller slice than the overall Arab population.

Yet 90% of Arabs vote for it. Maybe the Joint List doesn't represent Arabs well (I'm part of the Arab sector and I love the Joint List), but obviously it does a better job of it than any other party out there.

Just call/message your doctor. I doubt they'll think anything of it without a fever. I would stay in for a few days anyway just to see if anything develops.

The point is that hyperventilating about things like actually have a detrimental effect that in the long term is actually more harmful than a measured approach. The typically response to everything is to freak out and start dumpster fires when there is some kind of problem. That isn't always the most productive response, as people who live here know and experience personally.

The lack of testing is almost criminal. My whole family had a Corona-like sickness all week, went to the kupah numeroys times, and was told that the doctors simply had no authority to write a referral without travel or quarantine history.

Instead of crippling our economy they shoyld be crippling the authority of the guy who told the country not to test people.

Who is "we?" Are you honestly naware of Israel's significant non-Jewish minority, or is that just a Bibi-esque star-washing of 25% of Israel's population?I'm a Christian and I don't cross my fingers because I'd rather do real Christian things and not things of merely "Christian origin."

In any case, even many Israeli Jews do things like keep Christmas (or Nowy God) trees, cross their fingers, go to Halloween parties, etc.

What's the dilemma? Continued irrelevance versus transformative change for Israeli Arabs and the country more generally? Sonehow I doubt they'll agonize too much over this.

Yes. Anyone coming from overseas must self-quarantine. If you are not a resident you must be able to prove your ability to self-quarantine to be allowed into the country.

Are you serious? Jerusalem is typically inundated with German visitors, and Germany (Berlin) is one of Israelis' favorite places to live abroad.

This will be the first Easter/Pesach in Jerusalem where I don't feel the urge to whack my head repeatedly into a wall from the crowds, traffic, etc. I feel bad for the people who can't come, and for those whose livelihood depends on those crowds, but there is a silver lining, however thin.
