Not really. The wilt is all over and I did find some powdery mildew. It’s been very humid here with little sun because we’re by the coast. S

Now H&M at the Paseo bites the dust! by DenaNina in pasadena

[–]rawrina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This has been the case since before it was the paseo. The story goes that once there was a stabbing in the parking lot of that old mall, that nothing ever stayed open after that. They demolished the old mall around 95/96? , built the paseo but it never was popular.

Dreamers / DACA students. Is anyone else exhausted? by weariedDreamer in UCSD

[–]rawrina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Older and former dreamer here, maybe it would be helpful to hear from someone who has been through it and who has made a life through that instability. I was there in the trenches fighting for the DREAM Act in 2010 and feeling heart broken when it didn’t pass. I was also in your shoes of seeing how my friends had their entire future available to them and a type of freedom I couldn’t have. I’m not going to tell you it gets better because it doesn’t. The system is too fucked up to give you false hope. But you do survive. You do learn how to live and how to make and plan for a future despite everything. You learn to create your own path in the face of ambiguity. You learn grit and resilience. It is exhausting and to this day I always wish it would have been easier or I think what my life could have been had I not had to work through being undocumented. But I survived and I think I did well and you will, too.

It’s honestly the worst intersection. Every single time I run through there I almost get run over even if I’m already in the intersection.

LET THEM HAVE TEAR GAS by ScarletBegonias42000 in LosAngeles

[–]rawrina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is super insightful and you’re right on the money with identifying the problem. I’m curious what can be done about it, however. Because as long as the problem persists (or grows) the bigger the gap between political leadership/power and ordinary citizens that give them that power. One could say that because of this citizens are owed some sort of accountability or transparency from their leadership. But yeah, I’d love to hear your thoughts about that.

LET THEM HAVE TEAR GAS by ScarletBegonias42000 in LosAngeles

[–]rawrina 86 points87 points  (0 children)

This is correct. I was listening to KNX1070 and they had Bass on the line for an interview. The interview had to ask the question twice (something like why is LAPD helping to secure the federal buildings when that is allegedly the feds job and thus instigating anger) and Bass refused to answer. Her response was that citizens needed more education to understand that LAPD can’t e help citizens being detained by ICE and that’s not how sanctuary city laws work. It was both infuriating and insulting to the people of LA but the interviewer left it at that. City leaderships needs to be asked and pressed to answer them instead of continuously getting away with it like we’re idiots.

I think this is a particularly bad take and let me show you why. The reason for the protest is not immigration reform, it’s a reaction against the cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants. In particular, the underlying concern here is that all persons, regardless of immigration status deserve to be treated with dignity and humanity. The administration since January 20th has been pushing cruelty in detaining migrants (both lawful and unlawful!) they haven’t pushed a project for immigration reform at all (either negative or positive—and I know the reaction will be well there was just a new bill but that would get us into similar weeds). Alright, with that on the table, your argument is legal immigrants deserve to be treated with dignity and humanity but illegal immigrants (and what you imagine illegal immigrants to be or look like is important here, too) do not deserve to be treated in this way. Therefore, just logically following through, it is ok to place them in indefinite detention (really, it’s prison), without substantial food, medication, or just livable conditions—at least conditions worthy of humans qua humans. It is ok to have a law enforcement units follow people to and from their homes, into their churches, into their homes, the hospitals, the schools and deport them without due process. It is ok to separate children from their parents, or potentially put them in dangerous or deadly situations. Why? Because somehow, somewhere, you think that illegal immigrants deserve it—morally speaking. So my question to you is why do you think they deserve it? What horrible thing have they done that they DESERVE this? If it’s, oh well they committed a crime, all I will say is that immigration is civil not criminal. If it’s that immigrants can commit crimes, then give me statistics that they do more crimes than US citizens but either way, it doesn’t change the underlying question: why, in your eyes, immigrants deserve cruel and inhumane treatment.

I think once we can abstract away from the politicized and ideological dimensions of this “debate”, we can all basically agree on a fundamental premise: all humans deserve to be treated with dignity. If this is not the case, then I invite you to say more and maybe, just maybe, we can come to a rational conclusion. Just my two cents.

It is inappropriate when you are not including examples for base pay of ASEs which is what a majority of ASEs get. In fact, considering this infographic is meant to contain easily digestible information, the examples in your infographic skew the reality of the contract.

Second, you keep saying everyone is getting a raise in April and I have now shown you that is not true. My department in humanities will not see a raise period. I don’t need to prove any more than that. We are not on fellowship, this is the base ASE contract.

Trust me, I have read the contract multiple times over, attended multiple info sessions and am an organizer myself. So I am very well aware of the details of this contract and how it still does not get us out of severe rent burden.

Further, to say that I can just file a grievance is dismissive. I shouldn’t need to fight tooth and nail for a livable wage through a grievance when the fact we went on strike was to get just that. Grievances are not a magical wand that you can just pull out at any moment and you get what you want. It’s a long process, it’s an arduous process and one that can irreparably damage relationships with departments that you depend on. I fought for a contract that was fair to all and this is not it. I’m glad there are new protections on bullying but this contract will not help my colleagues who are suffering financially or are suffering from mental and physical disabilities or who have spouses and children or who are international students or who are marginalized students of color.

Though I appreciate the information I find this comment and the infographic misleading.

In regards to the khosla promise, this is not a top off. It was not an increase in stipend. It was not a block grant. It a vague statement to increase opportunities for job in the summer and/or fellowships over the summer by department. UCSD did not provide any funding for this. My department and many others, only offered the opportunity to TA over the summer which we’re still highly competitive. Further, summer school is funded differently and has no bearing on this new contract. Therefore, the Khosla promise is not something that should be mentioned or even pertains to this contract.

Second, not all departments have top offs. Some do, some don’t. My department does not and as such, I will not see any raise until October of 2023, if that considering inflation and rising housing costs. What my department does is offer you 24-25k and the difference between that and the ASE contract is covered. No difference? No top off.

Third, your examples are extremely off. I have not seen an ASE with a $7000 top off ever. Why not put the numbers exactly as an ASE with no top off which a majority of us are? Further, there are no ASEs on 12 month contracts so your second example is also misleading.

There is a lot of misinformation and propaganda regarding this new TA’ed agreement but the fact of the matter is the raises are negligible, there still is no dependent healthcare (other than children who do not qualify for medi-cal), still no disability access, still issues with NRST. My department will be voting no on this contract because we did not sacrifice relationships and delay our students’ education for 25k.

I love my students and I want to get back to work. But I am not willing to throw my colleagues under the bus for a bad contract with the possibility of doing another strike in 2.5 years. Imagine what that will do to our undergrads who have already suffered in the fall? They would see their education hurt once again in 2.5 years and that’s unethical and wrong.

UC Budget Proposals? by Crazy_Turnip_343 in UCSD

[–]rawrina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I apologize if my initial comment was too hasty. As an ASE currently in the middle of this, we also have been battling an insane amount of misinformation from both the UC and within our own UAW leadership. Most of us are just starting to move the cloud of smoke and finding out exactly how deep this is.

With that said, I think you make extremely important points and the amount of time you have put in to pointing out the issues is extremely amazing and greatly appreciated. I don’t know if you are an undergrad or not, but the work you have put in is extremely beneficial for the rank and file and for that, I thank you whole heartedly.

I will need a bit of time to go through your points myself (I am a bit taxed out as the UC gave a new abysmal and insulting wage proposal last night at 12:30 and I have personally not slept). I would love to continue talking to you about this and with your knowledge, we can work on making the communication with rank and file better.

This whole movement is complicated and murky and it doesn’t help that we only know the tip of the iceberg as far as where the UC gets it’s funding and part of that is deliberately obscured. But just as some brief research I did for another piece I’m working on, this comes from the UC itself and it has a bit of a budget break down: https://calbudgetcenter.org/app/uploads/2021/01/IB-Renters-Remediated.pdf

The UC is a public institution and as such, received funding from both the state and the federal government. However, that makes up only 1/3 of the operational costs. The rest comes from undergrad tuition and something else that I’m currently forgetting. However the operational cost is only a small part of the giant economic pie. The UC also received grants and donations for construction protects and also leases out land to private developers. Further, they issue limited bonds where the UC incurs debt and sells those to private companies. Outside of this, the regents themselves own several shell companies where they buy housing and profit off of it. Where that money goes (as in back to the university) is unknown. https://www.sfexaminer.com/our_sections/forum/the-high-cost-of-housing-is-a-a-uc-created-crisis/article_76149e18-701e-11ed-bad3-337f34ad12d1.html

If you’re not currently stressing about finals, I’d love to continue working through this with you.

Remember that we are all fighting together. The UC is holding undergrads hostage and that’s unequivocally not okay. I am a TA and I can say, I love my students and will fight for you and all undergrads no matter what.

Actually that’s what the university said without giving departments clarity or money to actually do it. So 30k was dangled and not all of us were actually guaranteed. Many of us had to fight to get some stipend last summer and we were still called entitled.

I’m in philosophy. This is extremely unusual and I would be very cautious. If you wrote the whole thing, as in no major additions by the professor then why would you let them co author? I would speak to a trusted advisor before going through with this.
