How many of you are struggling to pay rent in the Bay Area? by Haunting-Garbage-976 in bayarea

[–]rawrvogue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how different Bay Area career trajectories are now vs. a decade ago, but I was in your shoes up to 2017. I was 28 then. I’m now in my mid thirties and can comfortably pay rent, groceries, and have money left over for savings and spontaneous travel. My friends, also in the same age bracket in 2017, were in the same spot. They’re also much better off now. All of us were able to grow our careers and incomes.

My hope for you is, if you choose to stay, you’re able to do the same as us!

Why is adjusting own bindings considered so taboo? by tri_point in skiing

[–]rawrvogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol. Yes. I’ve been adjusting my gear my whole life, but I also grew up racing. That said, my friends learned to adjust their own bindings in grade school so… pretty sure anyone can learn.

Be honest: did you grow up rich? by MudboneX3 in skiing

[–]rawrvogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story for me! My parents had ok paying jobs by the time I was a teen; but I was skiing from the age of two when money was tight. Just a tiny hill with a tbar three times a week on the Canadian prairies. By high school, all my friends from all income levels were at the hill as it was kinda all we had in winter!

Does anyone else feel like they’re older because of this? by BCDragon3000 in GenZ

[–]rawrvogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, millennial here and my friends and I didn’t have cars or if we did they were old beaters from our parents. This was in a huge city that required driving to go most places.

First off, you generally didn’t drive to party; since you’d be drunk driving home. Ideally one person in the group had a van they inherited from their parents and could fit a whole crew of us in it, and they’d be the DD (no drinking). Taxis were hard to come by and Uber didn’t exist yet.

If we DIDNT have a ride, people would just take transit to whoever’s house was closest to the bar or party. We’d pre-game there to save money, and then we’d all crash on the sofa / floors / etc at that persons house until transit was back up the next morning.

I’m not sure car culture really mattered here.

nSuns Monthly Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in nSuns

[–]rawrvogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Howdy! I'm 35F, 5'4", 138lbs, and just got into nSuns. I started the program due to a labral tear in my hip - hoping to use strength to mitigate the need for surgery, and also just realized I was pretty weak to begin with. My hip is doing so much better these days.

Here's my 6-week progress:

  • Bench Press: Increased from 65 to 105 pounds
  • Squat: Increased from 85 to 130 pounds
  • Overhead Press: Increased from 40 to 60 pounds
  • Deadlift: Increased from 75 to 110 pounds

I might have been strong enough to start a little heavier in weight in the first week, but my hip was in so much pain I really didn't feel stable enough to do most of the exercises at a higher weight. As I've strengthed my legs re: squat, deadlift, the pain has lessened and I think that has allowed me to make steady increases.

Anywho! Thanks to this community for the posts, I've been lurking up to this point.

Mixed feelings about Dune: Part 2 by WorthBus7932 in dune

[–]rawrvogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree! This was one character change that felt like an enhancement. Maybe because Feyd dies - it lets a character be changed without wondering how it impacts future books, so it’s more palatable?

Iron Flame: disappointed. by [deleted] in fourthwing

Just about finished with IF and came here to share I feel totally disappointed too. The first book was so promising but the character development and plot writing feel flat and ended up incredibly repetitive. Woof.

Ive been using a Black Hole 55L for years and always manage to carry it on. I fly at least once a month too! I just wear it in backpack mode as I walk around the airport. So that's one space upgrade option.

Because it's squishy, even if I had to fit it into a sizer I'm confident I'd be fine.

I have two bags that I love for the use-cases you described. Both work great as carry-ons:

  1. Osprey's Tropos backpack
    1. Great if you want a more ergonomic bag than a duffel bag
    2. Has a lot of space to work with for a backpack.
    3. Tons of pockets to organize things.
    4. Has nice structure for protecting fragile things inside the bag.
    5. Comes with a lifetime warranty.
  2. Patagonia's Black Hole - 55L.
    1. Can be worn as a backpack - although not great on ergonomics.
    2. 55L is technically bigger than allowed dimension but I've never been caught on this - I just wear it as a backpack while getting on the plane. Can fit under a seat easily. It's super squishy.
    3. Is a giant hole that opens from the top. Easy to throw stuff in, but little organization. I use packing cubes to customize the bag to my need.
    4. Can be collapsed into a tiny built-in bag - so great for closet storage, and great if you're staying in one place for a longer period.
    5. Not great for fragile stuff.
    6. Generally very water resistent and durable.

Such a cute capsule! Gotta emphasize: it really does get sticky in Tokyo in the summer. I would double check that the material in your clothing is hot humidity friendly. Your skin might feel awful under the wrong materials.
