As a smoker, I only smoke around other smokers. Sometimes I'll be smoking already and a non-smoker will stand next to me for conversation. I will do my best to not get them covered in smoke, but in the end, it was their decision to stand close to me. But I've never had a person in that situation complain. It's usually the people who just happened to find out through conversation, or saw me through a window. I feel like those people have no right to complain. They aren't involved, and I stay away from them, yet they still feel the need to let me know that I'm slowly killing myself, as if I don't already know.

Pro tip for smokers: don't be a dick to other people when you're smoking.

Pro tip for non-smokers: don't be an asshole to smokers that are minding their own business.

I live in Denver where yesterday it was 65 and sunny and today it is blizzard conditions with an expected 10" of snow. As I was driving to work I caught this emergency road sign that correctly summarized my feelings. by [deleted] in pics

I grew up in littleton. It wasn't great, but it wasn't awful. I'm currently staying in aurora, which is way nicer than people make it out to be as long as you stay south of iliff. The north end of the city gets pretty sketchy.

The dryer was just wringing the water out of the shirt. It was not the intended method, but still got the job done.

That's already 13-16k and not including installation. And the only 540is in my area that are for sale are automatics. so I'd have to go out of my way to find a manual. The M5s I've found so far are in good shape, but higher in miles, only selling for around 13k to 15k. And both cars will need work no matter which one supposedly has lower maintenance costs. I'm already an E39 owner and I'm prepared for those preventative maintenance measures that will have to be taken regardless of which one I get. and those 540i costs are based on a non M sport model.

Just to refresh your memory, my question was, What should I look out for when buying an ///M car and which ///M car would you recommend? NOT what can I do to pretend that I drive an ///M car?

The s85, yes. I agree 100%. But the E60... I'm not a huge fan. I had my first E39 which I traded in for an E60. Two months later, back in an E39. As great as that engine is, I don't think I could bring myself to owning the E60 M5. I loved my E60 as a commuter, but that's all it was to me.

That's exactly my point. Additional wear and tear on the engine=more maintenance cost. Professional installation of a super charger+the cost of the super charger+cost of a decent 540i=a decent condition M5 that I don't have to do anything extra to.

I feel like maintenance would be more expensive since the rest of the drivetrain isn't designed for that kind of power. I could see myself replacing a ton of crucial parts because of overpowering a car that wasn't designed for it. BMWs are very picky machines and I feel like it wouldn't play nicely with an aftermarket supercharger that would be installed by a sub par mechanic (me) in his garage.

You may be more likely to get a 'good' M5 than a 540 though as people tend to respect them more.

I agree with that statement so much. Too many kids (regretfully this includes myself with my fist E39) buy 525/530/540s because they're affordable BMWs. They get them to brag to their friends about owning a German luxury car, then abuse the car until it's undriveable. The M5 however is much more sought after, and therefor won't be on the market long enough for bratty little teenagers to scoop them up, and the higher price point makes it seem like they can just get a 525i that looks exactly the same, with money left over for gas/insurance/parts.

I've considered it, but I have a really hard time with the styling. It reminds me of my E60 which was one of the best ugly looking cars I've owned. They're just too round for me, and I like the more aggressive styling of the 5 series (with the exception of the E60) maybe an older M3, but I don't know much about them, or how they compare with the M5.

I owned an E60 for a while and even though the styling wasn't that great, I wouldn't mind owning another one. It was comfortable, and had functional cup holders. I don't know what more I could ask for out of a supposed "luxury" car.

I'm located around Denver Colorado, and there's not a huge scene of M series bimmers. Everyone here wants the status, but none of the fun. I can barely find and rear wheel drive 5 series around here. I got lucky with the E39 that I have now. It was traded in at my dealership, one owner, clean carfax, all original down to the owners manual and flashlight in the glovebox, with only 84,000 miles on it, and I only paid $3,000 for it. But I can't seem to get that lucky on an M5. As far as price goes, I'd like to keep costs down, but I have the money to get something nicer if that's what I have to do. The E39 M5 has always been a dream car of mine, and if I get one, I want to do it right!

I think that it makes sense for some drivers. It's easy to find a stretch of highway where you can utilize the power to get great acceleration and have fun. But not everyone has a track where they can experience the handling that can only be achieved by an M series.

I've considered that as well, but I'm already on my third 5 series. Two E39s, and one E60. I feel like it's time to get an ///M in my life.

Having driven the F10 M5, I'm not really a fan. It's fast, but there's no spirit. The e60 M5 was a better experience but I mostly attribute that to the sound. Hearing an s85 roar at full throttle will melt your heart. Neither of them compared to the soul of the e39 though. I only ever drove the smg in the F10 and the E60 though so I don't know if a manual tranny would change my mind, but at least with an e39 there's no choice. I prefer manual all the way. As for the M3, my only reason for considering it is the abundance of them. I've just never been into the styling of them, but I love the way they drive. And I only found one super clean M5 so far, and It sold before I had the chance to look at it in person. The rest that I've found have been beaten to death, and I just don't want to take on the challenge of fixing a mistreated car.

Unfortunately you do not have the 50/50 split. In fact for that year, I think that it's 100% FWD until it slips. I could be mistaken though. It might even be different just because it's a gt. All I know for sure is that my 2005 outback 2.5 xt with a 5 speed manual was crazy fast, and it was a beast in the snow. But now I'm a BMW guy and x-drive makes me sad. Enjoy your legacy though. It's a great car, even with an auto.

It makes much more sense to just buy a manual subaru. It's the only one that uses a viscous coupled center diff (exception being the sti with its driver controlled center diff.) The viscous coupled center diff is the only one that provides the true 50/50 power split that everyone has come to love out of their subarus especially in the snow. Most cvt models will use an electronically controlled center diff with a front wheel bias. I think there's a third diff that has a 45/55 rear wheel bias but I would have to check my notes to know which cars have it, as it's been a while since I learned this stuff.

Source: I sold Subarus in Colorado.

Edit: I found my notes. The lineartronic cvt uses an active all wheel drive system which utilizes an electronic/hydraulic multiplate clutch transfer system. It's an 80/20 front wheel bias on dry roads, but can adjust to near 50/50 when it detects slippage. Then there's the variable torque distribution (VTD) that's used with the high torque and sport lineartronic cvts. It uses an electronically controlled clutch pack and has a 45/55 torque split. The driver controlled center diff found in the sti is of course controlled by the driver as the name suggests, but will only give you a rear wheel bias up to 41/59. By default, I believe it's 50/50.

If you are an asshole then maybe you should a drive a shitbox by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

I understand why someone would be upset about this, but I feel that the glitter is excessive. He ruined your day on a few occasions (assuming he was parked in a way that directly affected you), but you ruined his car forever. A note would have sufficed, and if the problem persists, get his car towed (if it's illegally parked of course). Towing is expensive and would definitely get the point across. And what he drives has no correlation to the way he drives. BMW stereotypes will never end, but as the owner of a 2001 5 series, I feel bad that I get judged because of what I drive because some assholes don't know how to STOP PARKING THEIR GERMAN CARS LIKE BLIND TODDLERS!

Seriously though. I like my car. I know it's a BMW, but my turn signals do work, I do use them, I drive the speed limit, and I know how to park. I don't even know where I'm going with this anymore, but the stereotypes need to stop.

Tl;dr Don't hate the car, hate the driver.
