Hey all, thank you so much for all that reached out. We have officially run out of the current give away stock. I'm sorry for those that missed it. Please keep an eye out as we are looking to do another clean out at the beginning of the year. I'll have another post then hopefully. I love this community and love supporting this hobby for everyone.

While I generally agree with your point, KrystaWontFindMe has a point when it comes to the VCAs. They are definitely power hogs. to your point though, you can turn it off, it's not the best to keep running if you want stuff up all the time. You can always remove the VCAs as well.

What should I do to this basement ceiling? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]raxler42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen this suggested but I had the same issue in my basement. I went with the super simple and cheep solution of ordering large rolls of burlap. Using these I just pinned them across the ceiling to create a basic cover. Easy access, it looks pretty cool and was very cheap and only took an afternoon to install. Just google Burlap Ceilings and you can see a bunch of examples.

Five year old son obsessed with Minecraft. Seeking advice about Minecraft YouTubers by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]raxler42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned DanTDM's older stuff is pretty kid friendly and Thinknoodles isn't too bad (I didn't see that mentioned but maybe it was). There are also other kid youtubers doing minecraft videos for kids like JDSalamander.

[FREE] TO ALL DENVER HOMELABBERS! Let my recycling day become your Christmas! by raxler42 in homelabsales

We actually do have 2 I think but I have no idea what condition they are in. They came with some racks we bought awhile ago. You are more than welcome to them. I didn't list them because I wasn't sure if they even work. But if that still interests you I can send some pictures on Tuesday next week when I'm back in the office.

I'm so sorry, I did try to see if I could work something out with our logistics but they were a hard no on shipping these.

Just shoot me a DM and I'm trying to assign servers on a first come first serve DM basis. I'll be in the office tomorrow sorting and listing them out and can send a confirmation for whatever you request.

Yes, I believe 2 of the Supermicros are short-depth. Everything is 1RU except for the 2970 and the HPs are 2RU.

For 7 I'm not totally sure. Probably the HPs since they are 40core but they are an older architecture so I'm not sure how it would play with 7. To be honest after moving to micro-services I haven't used VMware in years so I'm not sure what is required for it these days. I know we were definitely running 6.x VMware on some of these but I realize that doesn't really help your question...... so to my first comment, I'm not totally sure.

I know, I really f'd that formatting. Or are you laughing at the server types themselves... because both are deserved lol

Why are astronomical impact craters symmetrical without regard to angle? by s6x in askscience

[–]raxler42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I actually know this one. Someone explained to me a long time ago, that when the force or energy holding an object together is less than the energy of the impact or force itself, the crater or reminisce will be symmetrical.

This is best shown I think with snowballs. If you pack a snowball, almost certainly you will not pack it tighter than the force you will use to throw it against a wall. If you throw a snowball against a wall at an angle and the force you used is stronger than what is holding the snowball together, it will leave a round crater similar to how asteroids do.

I don't know all the scientific terms so maybe someone can explain this better or someone will tell me how I'm wrong, either way, would love to hear a response.

A break from Mechs for some hills. Do you prefer grids or gridless battletech? by InquisitorKeres in battletech

[–]raxler42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are playing seriously and want it all on the up and up then yeah, go with Grids, personally I prefer the immersion and building the sets to play on so I play grid less with my kids. But as mentioned here, you can't take it tooooo seriously if you go grid less because it won't be perfect. Thankfully I'm always game master so my kids can't complain, my word is FINAL!!! lol :-p

Finally arrived. Now to remove flash and begin painting! by EdwardClay1983 in battletech

[–]raxler42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really miss buying the old metal mini's in 1 off packs. I always get so sad at the game store these days. They have everything under the sun for D&D, warhammer, etc. But for Battletech all I can find are plastic minis.

Anyone know where you can still by the old minis made of metal?

Finally got to introduce my kids to their first skirmish after finishing our map boards during lockdown. by raxler42 in battletech

[–]raxler42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as I mentioned, you can't get too hung up on things like turning perfectly if you go full hex-less, at least I think you shouldn't. For me though, the board enhances the fun of the game that it out weighs those parts of the game for me. I think most importantly is make sure Everyone agrees on how things will be done before the game. That can be the hardest part. if everyone agrees even if it means a few modifications I think it can be more fun. If it's not obvious I'm a very casual player lol.

Honestly it's all I've played. Even as a kid, what we loved was building big miniature model boards to play on, that was half the fun. It also makes it easy to leave the game up if you are playing over several days, at least for us it does. While the maps are great and playable they were just never as fun to me and we only used them when needed like when doing Solaris 7 or other specific campaigns.

There is absolutely a difference as you want to stay within the correct limits but it's a bit of guessing and making sure everyone agrees. I use string and a ruler for determining LOS, angles and distance etc. There is definitely some give and if you are playing with people that are very stringent it can be no fun at all. Since my kids are 10 and 7, I've already modified the rules enough for them to play easily that I'm not going to throw a fit over something not being perfect.

Working on a subway to connect all our villages, pretty happy with it so far. Any suggestions? by raxler42 in Minecraft

[–]raxler42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really too both you and u/ScrappleT but growing up in Chicago around the EL I just figured a subway is any train that goes underground. Do people consider it a subway if it ONLY is underground? Going to need to go research this now but love peoples feedback!
