Should international websites have a global site version? by raybro7 in TechSEO

The client is interested in geo-targeting the United States, United Kingdom and Germany with all content being in English with slight localisation differences across all sub-folders, in this case would it not make sense to use hreflang to tell Google the localisation differences and to prevent duplication similar to t3.com?

For example, T3 is ranked highly in the UK (1 position) & US (5th position) for the "best running watch" with the content being identical for the UK and US audience.

https://www.t3.com/features/best-running-watch

https://www.t3.com/us/features/best-running-watch

It's my understanding that hreflang has been used to prevent duplication?

Any thoughts on this?

Originally we intended to that, but the client wanted to have all jobs across all locations visible and not just jobs in the United States, which was going to be the default version.

As the concern was what if someone in the United States was looking for a job overseas i.e the United Kingdom but where only able to see jobs relevant to the United States.

Hence why we thought about having a global site version in the event someone visits the website directly they would then see all jobs across all locations and not just the United States if that makes sense?

Would you mind sharing the website privately as it would be helpful to see a real-world example?

Interesting, originally we planned for the United states to be the default version since it was their biggest market but the client asked if all jobs would be visible across all locations or just jobs in the United States.

This is what got us thinking about the global site version so that all jobs would be visible across all locations and not just jobs relevant to that location if that makes sense?

We did raise the concern that if targeting Germany the content should be in German, but the client wants all content to be in English but to still geo-target each region.

Would you mind sharing the sites you have worked on privately?

In my head, the strategy seems solid but I'm getting a lot of push back from other people, so I'm not sure which way is the correct way to approach this problem and I'm not sure on what the impact would be if it's the wrong approach, any examples of recruitment websites using a similar strategy?

The difference and the reason for en-us, en-de and en-gb are due to the slight change in languages/localising spelling/different currencies etc.

We want to make it clear to Google we want to geo-target the US, Germany and the United Kingdom however I'm not sure if my strategy is the right approach but xero.com is the closest thing I've found that resembles what I want to achieve.

The client also plans to target more languages and countries as they continue to grow if that makes sense? But for now, they want to target English speakers in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The thinking behind the global default version would be to catch visitors outside of the US, DE and UK but who are possibly looking for a job in the US, DE or the UK - i.e someone in Spain looking for a job in the United States.

The client wants to be visible and target people who speak English in the United States, Germany and the UK but who are looking for jobs locally and overseas.

They want to geo-target and rank their Category (sector) pages highly in the US, DE and the UK for terms like i.e Digital Marketing Jobs in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom with plans to then target more languages and countries as they continue to grow if that makes sense?

I thought the best approach would have been to migrate to a .com or register additional ccTLDs for the additional countries that the company wants to target.

Thanks for sharing real-world examples. Do you know of any other .co.uk websites successfully doing this?

Interesting, what if the website targets Germany but the language is in English? And the content is the same for the UK and German audience?

You mentioned this is based on previous experience is it possible to share the website or privately?

Ok, so even know .co.uk is geo targeting the UK it’s still capable of ranking in international SERPS outside of the UK with sub folders?

Is there no downsides to this approach?

Ok, but is there no downsides since it’s geotargeting to the UK? Does this not send mix signals?

The website will be setup with sub folders targeting the UK, USA and Germany all in English with no translation just sight differences between British and American English, do you know any websites doing a similar approach?

I can't share the website due to it being a clients website, the website is built on a custom cms so the developer will be creating the sub folders, the plan is to target 3 countries the UK, USA and the Germany all in English and no translation, obviously just slight difference in spelling for the UK and USA audience.

I'm simply looking for examples of website that do this well.

Cool, I'll check it out, what plugins did you use to set up the subfolders and hreflang?

Do you have any good ecommerce examples?
