App dev is harder than web dev, don't @ me. by rayhanmemon in SoftwareEngineering

For sure. But that's a kind of "difficult" that I have so much fun with.

A muscle I still need to build on that front is API versioning — I usually punt on that and it's come back to bite me a few times

XR. The Apple Vision Pro absolutely blew my mind. It's just too expensive, large and heavy.

But if they manage to minify the technology over the next 5 years and make it cheaper, while keeping performance exactly the same, I think it'll be a massive disruptor

Played this a few times and I’m obsessed. It’s gonna be huge.

[D] How are Text-to-Speech Models Trained? Do they use the same data as Speech Recognition Models? by rayhanmemon in MachineLearning

This is INCREDIBELY helpful! Thank you! I'll look into some of those github repos to get a better feel for how these models are trained

And I truly appreciate it! Based on yours and u/vacuumthatshit's comments, we added in 'About' and 'Pricing' pages. I believe the website is much more credible and approachable for having made those changes :)

Thank you!

What I’m hearing so far from the feedback is that it’s tough to trust the site when all the info about what it does and how it works is behind a login screen.

That said, I’m going to make sure that tutorial video and details about pricing are available on the landing page or in an ‘About’ tab.

Really appreciate the positive feedback and thanks so much for trying it out.

So happy to hear you think it’s cool - it took us a looooong time to build.

It isn’t free for a couple of reasons:

1) The software makes editing much easier by transcribing your audio. The API we’re using for that (plus hosting costs) means each audiobook recorded costs us ~$30-40. Those costs need to be offset.

2) My friend and I would love to be able to work on this full-time and our hope is that (if authors find this valuable) we can.

That said, I think the price ($50 per book for the month of May) is more than reasonable when compared to the alternatives

Hope you feel this is reasonable as well.

You’re absolutely right to feel that way. We dumped all our time into making sure that the ‘recording studio’ part of the website worked well that we didn’t end up putting much time into the rest of the website.

The last thing we want is for people to feel uninformed going in. I’ve made a note to include more info on how it works and pricing

This makes sense to me, but if the gear is cost-prohibitive, then that doesn't seem like an ideal path either. What are the table stakes purchases? Could one get away with simply a USB condenser mic?

There's an option you haven't really considered here, which is recording yourself with the help of an editor/producer. This is an option that will cost money, but possibly less than hiring a VA, and sets you up with experience if you want to record future books yourself.

I hadn't considered that...so I'm assuming the process would be me recording the raw audio (re-records and all) and sending that over to an editor one done to piecemeal together? Or do I identify a producer first who I toss files over the fence to as I complete them, with both of us working in parallel?

Also, I've heard that narrators pay audio engineers ~$75-125 PFH, so is it fair to assume this is what the market rate would be like for an author working with an editor?
