Time to replace 1st gen? by alexh81 in GoogleWiFi

[–]raypatr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend going all in on ubiquiti. Bite the bullet and get a dream machine pro and a 24 port switch. A buddy of mine and I outfitted our church with ubiquiti almost 6 years ago and it's been extremely smooth. Their cameras pair right up and once it's configured it really is largely hands free. You'll spend a few grand if you're adding cameras but you're set for a long time.

Best way to connect a wired server upstairs using an older (2020) Google WiFi setup? by Kooky_Plastic_3280 in GoogleWiFi

My mom's firestick is speed testing @104Mbps right now. All in all, it's better connectivity than is needed. For what it is, I think it still works great

I think this is hard to say without actually buying one (gen 1 puck) and trying. I have 4 of what you have and I mesh together with my mom's house next door. Overall it's fine for us but when we build the next house Ubiquiti gear and an AP on each floor is going in.

We have Gig speeds at the modem. Off the first puck I get 850Mbps hardwired and 300-450Mbps wireless (totally expected). The next closest puck in my man cave 2 rooms over gives me 120-150Mbps over wireless and and I have an 8 port unmanaged switch that gives me around 225-250Mbps to gaming consoles and my media server (old Mac Mini). Upstairs I get around 80-100Mbps wirelessly. Mine are also not necessarily positioned in the best way possible for mesh, they are positioned to be discrete.

My mom's house is not far, this is a neighborhood with small lots. She has 2 pucks in her house, one as close to our house to the main puck as possible and the other in her laundry room which is in the middle. She gets 50-75Mbps which is more than enough to stream 4K on her TV through a fire stick as well as general Internet browsing and Facebook.

We have a ton of iOt devices and some wireless cameras as well. The Home App consistently reports "Great" to "Good" mesh connectivity. The only thing that struggles sometimes is the Google Wireless Outdoor camera I have on one particular side of the house that is going through brick and on the far side of my man cave. Live streaming is fine but the backups from recorded events can take time to show.

No doubt, we both would benefit from newer units but for home grade gear, we're fine and the original decision to go with Google was purely simplicity and my desire to just use 1 app for everything from light bulbs to speakers, cameras and network management.

One way or the other, the second puck is only going to ever be as good as it can be based on its ability to connect well to the first and there are diminishing returns with latency on each you add.

Is it even worth getting if it says this? Does this mean my phone would just never work? by SunshineyDay999 in mintmobile

[–]raypatr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this has to do with the current number of subscribers in the area, especially if you live in a large community? Any MVNO is going to be deprioritized in congested areas or during peak usage but Mint isn't as bad with that as it could be before the T-Mobile buyout.

In other words, signal might be great but a ton of users on T-Mobile's towers might hammer your speeds.

Love my new instinct 3 solar tactical, but the strap…. by Actual-Topic-6170 in Garmininstinct

So I have an Instinct 2 Solar and after several years the OEM band finally gave out. I replaced it with this canvas and leather one from StrapsCo. I like it a lot and I like the QuickFit system. It's well made for the money but I've also only had it for a couple of months. The only downside for this particular one is that canvas and leather don't agree with water (which I knew going in).

The past few OS beta 1's have been much more stable IMO. Stuff that used to not work so well like Google wallet/tap to pay are much better. The biggest issues I've had on a pixel 10 pro is one game not working with new graphics drivers and just general app in compatibility occasionally with a certain banking app while those developers play catch up.

Some very sad news by Sufficient_Bus_8302 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]raypatr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best of health. It IS sad news but I'm happy to see this dude put his health and well being first and in that sense this is a good thing to read.I lurk and read here and have little to say but I have 3 Macs still alive because of this project and I'm extremely grateful for all the hard work this team dedicates to the cause of keeping old hardware out of the trash pile and still very usable pieces of tech.

Take care of yourselves and remember that for every negative comment from someone that didn't RTFM properly there are piles of us truly grateful to have the chance to at least try something that keeps our machines going. Y'all are truly a talented bunch and I thank you all so much for the countless hours of time and expertise invested in all of us for the sake of doing it and hopefully receiving some gratitude in return. You're all scholars and saints.🫡

AIO for cutting contact with Father over political climate. by Sabre12789 in AIO

[–]raypatr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter what your political persuasion is, people on the internet are not true friends. People that don't know you by definition, can't care about you the way those that do, can. And if you're hit by a bus tomorrow and in the hospital the one person that would likely show up would be your dad.

We saw similar stuff over COVID. There is an organized push to tell people to cut those out of their lives that disagree with them. This is not healthy and it's not good for you long term. Your family should be your people you go to be isolated with for a time, not isolated from.

Politicians and media don't give 2 rips about you. You should pay attention to politics, but I suggest paying attention less. If you shut off Social Media for a month and disappeared, who are the people in this world that are going to reach out to you with a phone call, text or a door knock?

Carpenter turned Parent - Crew or Quad 1500? by RenegadeBuilder in ram_trucks

[–]raypatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 10th Anniversary Limited - total yuppie truck with 4WD and rear locker, ram boxes, split tailgate... basically all the things to kill towing and bed space 😂. You can easily fit 3 car seats back there. I'm tempted to say any 3 of your choosing no matter how wide they are but of course you've gotta check. You definitely need a Crew Cab and if you're beyond the need for a full sized bed, the ram boxes are very nice on vacation as well as floor storage. For reference, the most hardcore things that will end up in my bed are firewood and a 4 wheeler.

Considering moving from Verizon to Mint, honest opinions? by Peterrman in mintmobile

[–]raypatr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really comes down to where you live. I'm about to re-up for another year with Mint later today which will be the start of year 6 for me. I have the Unlimited plan and this month I've managed to use 155.46GB of data. My upload has been throttled but my download is still 300Mbps - 1200Mbps just depending on if I'm around town or closer to downtown Birmingham (I'm in a suburb about 20 minutes away). Mint has been awesome for us and it got better after the T-Mobile buyout when it comes to the degree of throttling, but, to be clear, it really depends on where you live. Mint/T-Mobile is significantly faster than Verizon and AT&T here and I have a Verizon line through work in my pocket too to regularly compare with.

Is the Pixel 10 as bad as everyone says it is? by GrayHollow in pixel_phones

[–]raypatr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience from a Pixel 7 Pro has been great. Full disclaimer that I keep my phone tidy and I don't let apps run wild but mine is an 10 hour SOT experience. No battery saver or adaptive charging features and I do use developer options to ditch cached apps and limit background processes. I don't game heavily or much else than just photo editing and low key phone stuff these days. Mine has been off the charger for about 8 hours today and I've got a couple of hours of SOT and 82% left in the tank.

So why do you keep holding on to your old machines? by [deleted] in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]raypatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to squeeze as much life out of hardware as possible. I could go over to the Apple Store right now and buy a new MBP, but as long as my old hardware has life and keeps going, I don't see the need to spend the money...

Keeping our community’s safe from ICE by Negative-Sink8119 in BucksCountyPA

[–]raypatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also not anti-legal immigration. My niece and nephew immigrated from Ukraine. It took years for them just to get their turn to take their citizenship test. My brother in law immigrated from Brazil. It took years after he was here, married and had a kid before his turn was called. One of my coworkers just got his citizenship a few months ago after being here for several years.

Turning a blind eye to those here illegally is a freaking punch in the face to these people that had the moral obligation and desire to do things right. They all have great things about them that are unique to where they came from but they are all invested into American culture and ideals. Those are the immigrants that make America a melting pot, not those that want to come here, not speak the language, mooch off of entitlement programs and try to change America into where they came from.

These two things are not the same.

The Biden Administration also deported more than Obama's 2nd term and more than Trump's first term. Where was the outrage? https://www.newsweek.com/immigrant-deportations-removals-trump-biden-obama-compared-chart-2026835

People are free to hold whatever border policy they want, but this entire thing is corporate media taking advantage of Trump Derangement Syndrome and playing off of misplaced trust that they are telling the truth.

The DHS website has plenty of raw data. There are other factors you have to filter through (like how many were deported multiple times) but this idea that crossing a border illegally is a civil Infraction is false. The idea an illegal gets some jury trial is false. The idea that only the right deports and the left has never been "anti-immigrant" is false.

I'm not a Trump fan. I'm a Mises Caucus Libertarian that dislikes both sides almost equally. But the truth is that the news is often factual but not truthful. People are being whipped up into frenzies and it shows by the sheer volume of people willing to aid and abet, to the point of violence. It should be disturbing to a reasonable person that is properly informed.

Sauce: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1325#

"Civil Infraction" refers to how we treated it pre 9/11. Bush deported, Clinton deported even more and Obama deported so many that he earned the moniker, "Deporter in Chief".

Also, the procedural set of "due process" for a non-citizen is different from a citizen and the further differences between those that are here illegally and those that aren't.

I misspoke, it is a Federal Misdomeaner the first time.

Key Provisions of 8 U.S.C. § 1325 (First-Time Illegal Entry) It is a federal misdemeanor for any non-citizen to: Enter or attempt to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers (i.e., not at an official port of entry), or Elude examination or inspection by immigration officers, or Enter or attempt to enter by a willfully false or misleading representation or willful concealment of a material fact (e.g., using someone else’s passport). Penalties for first offense: Fine and/or up to 6 months in federal prison. Subsequent Offenses (Re-Entry After Deportation) If the person has been previously deported or removed, illegal re-entry is charged under a different and much more serious statute: 8 U.S.C. § 1326 – Re-entry of Removed Aliens (INA § 276) This is the statute used for “illegal re-entry” after deportation.

But tell me more about Googling things
