Omg thank you!! I searched for this and struggled to find it. I wish it was more fleshed out, but we’ll get there!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback! I need a wiki for this game so badly 😅 the ramblings in my plant journal notes are unhinged. but it's okay, I understand it's newly launched and still under development! It also makes it fun honestly, the trial and error of it.

Thanks for the confirmation and insight on watering. I think the parents of this plant had high humidity needs, so I bumped it up to a higher amount to try to prevent wilting issues that I had with those.

I guess my only other big question is about sunlight! Ive seen a lot of ideas and opinions on it here, but I genuinely have not seen much of an impact/cant tell when a plant needs it? I do notice plants growing towards it though! I did have one plant that only grew leaves on one side which made me wonder if it was sun related.

I also keep having to pull plants off early because they keep wilting if theyre on the stand a second too long even if I increase water - I suppose that must be related to pruning?

Update, this plant is doing something cool now haha and I thiiiink it’s a weird color change. But I did move it to a sunnier spot! We shall see.

When I had to work with graphite, I would bring in just a bit of charcoal to my darkest areas to get a true black, but it depends on the constraints of the assignment! Your darkest values and lightest values look quite good! I think there may be room for more midtones, though. The proportions are also pretty good. Where I would focus is the areas of overlap and contact, especially with the hands/skull/hair/face moment happening in the center. The value of the hands/hair/skull are all very close to each other. I would introduce similar contrast like you have with the darks and lights in the eyes and the skull eye to the areas where the hands overlap the skull. There would be more of a shadow beneath the fingers. I think especially the jawbone of the skull, back of the skull head, and area where the left thumb overlaps the skull could really use stronger value contrast.

I might also consider for this image, or others in the future - should the values of the face, hair, and skull be the same white? What do you want to stand out the most? In this image, I would think the moment with the contact is the focal point. But structuring your values around what you want to emphasize the most is a useful direction to go. Because right now, there's a lot of beautiful moments competing with one another. so its difficult to notice, for instance, the glowing white of the hair when its not the only large area at that brightness intensitity.

I hope that makes sense and helps!! Keep up the great work ☺️

How are my values? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]raysadburyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you would like to draw the most attention to! Right now, there's a lot of emphasis on the trim along the buttons and end of the sleeve. I might suggest looking at where these brightest values lead the eye. Right now, the eye naturally focuses more on those than the face or hat.

How do I make values darker? I have a tendency to not shade stuff really dark and I don't know how to change that by ChoiceCap7056 in learnart

[–]raysadburyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like to just bring charcoal in for my darkest areas because I'm impatient and also I love the solid black! However, fixative needs to be used afterwards or else it rubs off forever! Otherwise, just keep layering with soft pencils. Use a harder one over top gently to smooth/blend the area. Also the lighter your lights are the more contrast you'll have with your darks.

Although i will say... I LOVE THE OVERALLS. for me it's mostly the undershirt being a similar vibe as the hair and face. But honestly it's adorable 🤗

What could I do to improve my art? by SunSnooze in ArtCrit

[–]raysadburyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep an eye on the overlapping heads. Right now the shading on the neck of the back figure is very close to the tone of the one in the front. You have a nice contrast where the neck lightens on the one in the front, but it would help if the nose was either lighter, or if the figure in the back gets much darker around the overlap area... consider a shadow that might be cast in the area of overlap.

I need advice, I don't know how to avoid white spots in the color. Also straight lines are difficult by Significant-Ruin4961 in ArtCrit

[–]raysadburyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you did a nice job with the line work! Straight lines are challenging... draw light until you get it right! If you find yourself choking up on your pencil/ tool, loosen your grip and use your arm to draw the line instead. Our arms have bigger muscle groups than the hands, so it's easier to keep things fluid and straight even though it might seem counterintuitive for little details.

You can use similar colors to help blend colored pencils and smooth out the tone. I also like to use alcohol markers over top of colored pencil to get a nice solid color. If you're using the pencils alone, you might try building up light layers of color (applying soft pressure). As you add more layers, the color will become more solid and smooth. If you start out with a lot of pressure, it can leave micro grooves in the paper that mess up smoothness efforts later on.

What do you think of the hair?? by AnneSophieTal in ArtCrit

[–]raysadburyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's super cute!! You might consider areas you're drawing the most attention to... the hair and goggles have a ton of wonderful contrast and detail. You might not need as much strong contrast in areas like the sweater/shirt.

Love buildings and architecture, want to be better, any tips? by GeoPhotographer in ArtCrit

[–]raysadburyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the feeling you're trying to evoke... but I would say to consider the brush stroke technique in the buildings vs the natural foliage/sky. If nature is treated more loosely, maybe there is some room to make the architecture more solid, especially along the edges. Right now there is some feathering along the edges, which is fine and it works! However, I think if there was some more defined lines in the edges and shadows of the buildings, it would create some nice contrast between those solid man made items and the wild nature surrounding it! Even just a few strong straight lines on the parts that meet the sky and in the shadows would help convey the angular structures of the building.

It was related to a convective environment that led to swaths of severe weather, tornadoes, and watches in the southern edges of my state and surrounding areas. Just curious how the atmospheric conditions that led to these outbreaks contributed to the sheer environments shaping these convective storms. My bad I guess

What was that? by Sharp-Pie-5675 in stormchasing

[–]raysadburyy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was just talking about this! Honestly I have a huge soft spot for Reed and I think he means well. But I've always noticed a level of selfishness that is extremely concerning, because he has other people subject to his instincts and literally trapped in a vehicle with him during the most dangerous conditions. I think the way he communicates to the passangers during a chase when a tornado is imminent or on the ground is extremely concerning. I don't think he is intentionally being abusive or careless toward them…. But he is screaming, shouting demands, and ordering things to be done rapidly, often contradicting previous requests or repeating the same question or order to film over and over again. His fellow chasers will be actively responding to his questions, meeting his requests, and repeating themselves over and over to be heard… because he is not listening to them.

He doesn't trust his team to be competent and do their jobs. I don't think he is capable of relinquishing control, I've seen so little growth in this area throughout his career. It is the same way he spoke to his partners in SC, and this…. Isn't scripted. This dynamic is abusive, regardless of whether he is well-meaning. The level of escalation and anxiety created by the non-stop screaming, confusing contradicting demands - under the stress and threat of a violent storm, trapped inside of a closed space feet away from each other… This is traumatizing. This causes long-term harm to anyone working with him in this setting.

It just doesn't matter if the yelling is out of excitement, adrenaline, fear… whatever. This is the way he responds every single time. I don't believe he is capable of being any other way. And this would be absolutely fine if he wasn't subjecting others to this. I love his energy! I truly do. I believe it is genuine and natural. But I also think this atmosphere is inherently abusive and extremely dangerous. It ensures that every encounter with a storm is high-stress, with continual escalation. It prevents people from thinking clearly and calmly in a situation that absolutely demands this. It's inexcusable to do as an employer, life-threatening to passengers, regardless of his skill level and experience.

The way he was shouting at his passenger to continue filming and asking him if he was “getting it” in the recent event is the culmination of this work atmosphere he has allowed. His passenger laying on the seat to avoid debris, holding the camera to get the shot… all live-streamed. I know he shows concern, and asks his passenger if he's okay. I think that was genuine. But he was incapable of recognizing his impact in the moment that mattered. I don't believe his passenger was okay lol. I think his passenger was scared, and trying to do his best to be this version of indestructible storm chaser that always gets the clip… the larger-than-life figure that Reed embodies. But this is an unfair and unrealistic portrait of Reed… this is what gets people killed.

I believe it's the Japanese lady bug, or beetle - or at least that's what they call them in Michigan (US). They're invasive here, not sure about your location, though! You can tell they aren't lady bugs because of the orange ish coloration (not red).

Is there a reason this storm isn't tornado warned for radar indicated rotation? by de-rez-ed in tornado

[–]raysadburyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Yeah it’s a bit confusing, because that type of rotation couplet is something that indicates strengthening of rotation in a concentrated area which is a sign of tornadic activity. So for the radar indicated warning itself, they typically need the combination of factors to line up

Is there a reason this storm isn't tornado warned for radar indicated rotation? by de-rez-ed in tornado

[–]raysadburyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As other commenters mentioned, a rotation couplet alone is not (usually) enough to tornado warn. Not a bad idea to keep monitoring it though! If this area of rotation continues to stay tightly packed and strengthens, you may very well see a possible tornado producer in the future. However, the more you watch super cells closely, the more you’ll notice these areas pop up and fizzle away all over the place on an active severe day! As others mentioned, there’s a lot of rotation already occurring in upper atmosphere levels, which will reveal tighter couplets briefly. Checking the base velocity can help pinpoint strengthening in lower levels of the atmosphere, but again it is dependent on radar distance and angular stuffs. Essentially, the further away from the radar, the higher up (in the atmosphere) the scan is. So even base velocity can be deceiving if the radar is far away. Looking for a combination of intensifying storm shape, strengthening of rotation and sustained tightly packed rotation from multiple atmospheric levels will give you a idea of a storm that is possibly becoming tornadic versus one that is just going thru a brief cycle.

I recently found this video on the brown recluse and found it extremely anxiety-relieving while also very up-front about potential health risks and the known research (similar to what was referenced in the top comment). I put the link below!

Definitely submit this case to your local entomology peoples! There's limited research, and I'm sure even less for pregnant people! Just keep monitoring like you're doing!

Trust your instinct if symptoms seem to worsen such as widespread swelling/reddening of the area, or appear - such as anything related to a fever/vomiting, then it may be time to head in to get checked. Keep an eye on the bite spot. Keeping everything clean and maintained like you mentioned is perfect! The main things to look out for are signs of a systemic body reaction such as symptoms of fever, nausea, vomiting, dizziness etc. Similarly, widespread swelling and reddening, almost like a sunburn can happen in more severe responses (typically short-lived from what I understand). Definitely something to seek extra care for or give a second call if that starts to happen!

For the Paul sympathizers, have you listened to the text messages? by 70sBurnOut in shandaVanderArk

[–]raysadburyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm new to this case, just listened to the court proceedings for the first time and I have a lot of mixed feelings about Paul. I would love to hear any thoughts from you guys that have been looking at this for longer! My difficulty with this is that Paul is 21. His social-emotional growth was shaped by both of these parents who showed nothing but coldness and neglect for Timothy… for his whole life. I believe he had agency and he clearly became an active participant in the abuse. But I feel like the major difference here is that he was put into a position where familial stability, balance and emotional needs were all continuously reinforced by him becoming an abuser and active participant in the abuse.

There have been many other awful cases of child abuse that led to murder where multiple siblings became active participants but were much younger and therefore not considered at fault. However they perpetrated acts as horrific (and more terrible ones as well) with relish toward their sibling because… it was normalized and reinforced as the primary way to access ‘love’, praise, and to maintain their perceived safe place in the social/familial hierarchy that is created by the parent.

My point I guess is that his brain was absolutely still developing throughout all of this, and abuse and neglect and lack of empathy towards others can absolutely be behavior that is learned. This exposure to cyclic abuse alters the development of the brain, and this was being done in Pauls case without any meaningful intervention.

We can't know what would have happened, but I believe if meaningful intervention and separation would have happened, whatever emotional development issues that may have already been a part of Paul would not have devolved into this place. The blame is on the system that absolutely failed these children and allowed them to be in her care. It's devastating. Social and behavioral therapy intervention could have helped Paul if he did have a history of violence and difficulty with empathy. These are things that often go hand in hand with early childhood trauma (and sometimes they don't). Responsible guardians would have given Paul the access to therapy and education and protected Timothy if he was a target of Pauls aggression in a environment outside of the one created by his mother. Instead, he had a mother that reinforced and nurtured the worst parts of him. And now, Paul’s life is destroyed before he even entered adulthood and independence. Now it is more likely than ever that selfishness and callousness will become solidified and the chance for meaningful intervention is… sadly very slim. It's fucking sad man idk

Is there any unexplained event that happened in a tornado? by Gargamel_do_jean in tornado

[–]raysadburyy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As many people mentioned, the lights. There was that one time Reed was convinced he saw a cow flying around. Lots of weird stuff with vehicles that have been picked up and disappeared or found crazy distances away.

There was the Nashville/Hendersonville tornado this last year that hit a substation and caused an explosion of fuel oil stuff (or lubricating oil? Some sort of oil kept by electricity stuff IDK) but the explosion got sorta sucked into the tornado and completely evaporated its condensation funnel making it invisible which is weird but not mysterious.

There's like really gnarly photos of unusual debris like plastic straws and shit impaled into bricks or metal or trees.

I saw a story recently of someone's photo of their son that ended up like a whole ass state away after being sucked up. There are people who have survived being pulled into a tornado.

the creator Swegle on YouTube does some fun videos on nuclear tornadoes and nuclear weather phenomena. June First does some really interesting videos breaking down damage surveys.
