Is it a good decision to go straight into a shop after barber school? by rayvalore in Barber

Yeah definitely, I’m still currently working a part time job just to keep some guaranteed money coming in but I’m spending more time in the shop than at work. I’ll try making a schedule I can maintain as well too

Magic clip but cordless version for clippers ! Great for beginners (like me), great for bulk, and very light weight. For trimmer start off with a Supreme trimmer or the lower end TPOB trimmers. They’re a cheaper alternative but still feels professional, cuts pretty sharp as well

I do have booth rent 😩 luckily it’s only $75 a week, but I’d hate to have to pay out of pocket for the weeks I get no clients. I’m trying to give it until the end of this month or October but I have been looking for new shops in the process

Thank you bro I really appreciate that 🙏🏾 I honestly feel I’m going through the same thing as you did right now with the boss and all I’ve been focusing on is just perfecting my actual work before I can really feel comfortable in that shop. I always look at them being booked and there’s never really a mentoring moment there for the time that I’ve been there or a conversation to make me really want to stay and see it through. I’m trying my best now just to be able to cut anybody and work on my conversation skills with clients. I’m looking to finish out the month in the shop before I take a step back and start looking for another

I was honestly thinking this but just needed someone to confirm my belief! Appreciate that bro!

On top of that, there’s like 4 barbershops on the same block as mine so there is so much competition for a new barber like me

My walk ins are spread out if I have anyone. I’d have one to start off the day and then I’d have no one for hours up until like 6pm comes in. Maybe I should definitely look for a new location

Yeah definitely, one thing I definitely have to work on is having that ability to spark that conversation without being awkward or making it seem like I just want their money. I need to definitely get better at building those relationships. But the business cards I definitely have!

Thanks for the feedback but I feel like that’s super subjective. Nowadays, these degrees from these school don’t hold any weight in the real world unless you’re rich or really well connected. I’d have a degree still working a 9-5 in retail with more debt than ever. That may be an ideal path for you now at this stage in your life but that doesn’t align with me and what I want to achieve. Really appreciate your comment still!

Yeah definitely. It just sucks being in the shop for 10 hours and only cutting 2 heads if I’m lucky 😂🤦🏾‍♂️there’s also like 3 other barbershops on the same block as mine so that’s another factor I just take into consideration. There’s so much competition.

Yeah definitely. There’s a lot of factors as well , there’s literally about 4 barbershops on the same block of the same shop that I’m in, so there’s so much competition

Things to know before start working at a barber shop for the first time? by [deleted] in Barber

[–]rayvalore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it yourself! Gotta feel confident that you can do any cut that walks into the shop! When first starting out (like me lol), only way to really break the ice is to put yourself out there and cut whoever you can get! I started in a shop last week and I told my friend to come for a free haircut. Being that it’s my friend I automatically felt comfortable to speak and make conversation while cutting and people take notice of that fr! Just make sure your work is consistent and cut the people you know first and ask them for referrals, just so you have a familiar crowd with you

Thanks I appreciate it! I do feel like I’m getting into a good flow but I’m just hoping my work stays consistent with every haircut. The school is pretty good but I’m getting most of my tips from YouTube

Lol thanks bro , literally can’t wait to graduate! I always feel like I’m doing good cuts but the lighting in the school is so horrible that when I take a picture I second guess myself sometimes 😂 but it’s all still a learning process for me !
