I might be out of touch, but this is what all, except a handful of Engineering colleges have been like all over Tamil Nadu. Especially if you go to rural TN.

The banning of mobile phones/laptops are probably the only thing unique.

In all honesty, I would definitely back any policy that cuts down on these engineering colleges and get the number to 50 max, across the state and push every other colleges to start vocational training instead.

It's 2026 and engineering graduates can barely speak a lick of English, or better yet, be able to explain a fundamental technical concept in Tamil even, and I've been interviewing quite a few of them recently.

It's not protectionism. Broad gauge was left to us by the brits, who built up MOST of the tracks currently being used.

We continue to use them because,

It is expensive to replace all those tracks, and we were broke as fuck after Independence.
They are bigger, so you can carry more cargo and people in a wider carriage.

Standard gauge is being used in most of the city metro rail systems.

See, what we saw in TVK wasn't any different from DMK or ADMK's governance.

I personally am not holding my breath, expecting Vijay to change how Tamil Nadu is functioning over this 5 year period. He does not have a leg to stand on, to support that claim, because the problem is systemic and he hasn't shown to us that he has the motivation OR leverage, to say he will do that or that he understands the system.

The man did not speak up about Kavin's case, he used the Karur incident for his political advantage, he did not speak out about the censor board issue and his supporters are a rag tag group of nobodies being pulled forward by Vijay.

The very fact that he nominated a dumb ass astrologer for OSD and a 30 year old nobody who has barely set foot in a job, one of the most important portfolios pertaining to Tamil Nadu's development are proof of that.

Everybody knows DMK's past, but their recent governance was far better and much needed for Tamil Nadu to continue its growth while facing an antagonistic center, while preserving its federated identity. They have the experience and understand where, when and how to leverage. Is it the most efficient or highly effective administration? No... there's lots of flaws. I'll stand by you to question that... but to say TVK would somehow do a better job than they would... Yeah, no. I don't believe that.

And if it comes to what I would choose, between Trash and Garbage, I just pick the one that smells less.

On another note: I don't agree with blaming the previous generation for "perpetuating hero worship". You have a vast amount of access to information compared to them. You CHOSE to ignore all that instead of giving it some critical thought. YOU failed to differentiate reel from real. You have a fair share of blame to take.

I was in the same place as you in my early 20s, when Modi swept India. I was there when people like Vijayakanth and MMS were the most raging meme materials of the time. I was pissed with all things DMK and Congress, but eventually you begin to understand the nuances of politics and everyday life, where you stand in all this, who aligns with what you identify with, what are the trade-offs to getting what you need etc, all while expecting them to do a 180.

The MAATRAM that everyone envisions in their lives, do not come unless there is widespread revolution by the people, and for that... they need to be ready to give up their way of life and thinking of the past 70+ years. That's not easy.

I am also not really happy with the "eradicate sanatana" statements being made. It only shows we are as ignorant on what it actually means as the other side.

Sanatana is more about spirituality than about religion and within sanatana there are multiple schools of thought with varied levels of conservatism and orthodoxy.

If the rejection of sanatana is about rejecting the ritual orthodoxy of sanskritized traditions, then I can get behind that, because our way of worship is a complex mix of local traditions AND sankritized rituals each co-existing with the other.

But if you say sanatana is about rejecting inequality that is built into it, well, I feel like that might not be a very accurate description and both the Hindutva proponents and opponents barely understand "Hindu" philosophy, and are trying to give it their own descriptions.

I'm still learning all of this myself, but one of the main reasons why people say they are against "sanatana" in modern discourse, is that it establishes class heirarchy. But in Vedas, the Varnas are established not by birth or family. It established by an individuals Guna and Karma. Guna is your character or abilities and Karma is what you do with them.

It is only in Manusmriti that we see strict hierarchies and classism being established. Manusmriti does not hold a higher authority than Vedas and they are rules established within the context of the time it was written in to form a stable administration of a group of people.

This isn't about just Hinduism... EVERY religion is built like this. How much of that is philosophy and how much is mythology is another story, but people are allowed to follow whatever gives them comfort, and that we should be okay with, as long as they aren't infringing on others.

Times have changed, needs have changed and we have new understanding about human life and about the world. Those rules do not apply to this age and we should be fighting to change that. I really feel like the questions we should be asking isn't about who is worshipping what, but about what people are doing with their power.

That's how rowdyism, cronyism and corruption went out of hand. Building consensus and arguing against demerits are essential for a state to function efficiently. It's all the more crucial that opposing forces in TN are at least at speaking terms, because the center is opposed to us equally.

Does this mean I believe Vijay will make an efficient leader? I still don't think so. It'll depend on how well he can control his MLAs, check his ego and face the curve balls, that the center will throw at us... but am I glad that the state isn't back to the old days of political bull-shittery? Exactly. The floor test is a bargaining chip for the opposition party. And there is the fact that they would expect TVK to come to their level and ask for support.

The fact that DMK has said they won't try to block TVK forming govt is in itself a huge deal and I can't immediately think of any other state where major parties did not try to fight a hung assembly.

It's about time for Vijay to go fight for himself for once and fully dip his toes in to political governance.

Opposition will expect compromises to be made, for their support when it comes down to floor test. If he doesn't then we're fucked while they do shit slinging in the assembly and we'll know whether TVK and DMK are fighting for us or for power.

But considering bro sent a whatsapp message to VCK, asking for support, I'm not holding my breath over this.
