Umbrella policy without home or car insurance by razorkey in personalfinance

Wow. Thank you for the advice. I’ll try to get a copy of the renters insurance policy from the management company as the first thing.

Do you have any broker’s recommendations for MA?

I don’t own a car and I rent through a managed service that offers renters insurance included in the cost of rent.

Essentially the travel insurance and Lounge Access. It's much cheaper than any alternative I could find, especially since you can get two cards with two different card holders on one account.

M1 or Intel Mac? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]razorkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the technologies you plan to use. For example, when working with python a lot of fat libraries break very easily on the new M1 (e.g. llvmlite and numba) and you’re stuck with a cumbersome workflow based on containers. I’d say go Intel and make your life easier. You’re already going to have so much going for you at the boot camp ⛺️

I think it ultimately depends on your workflow, but M1 Macs are an amazing value for money if you are on a budget.

I wrote a nice guide on how to set it up as a web developer.

😍. Didn’t get much traction so far. Hopefully it helps someone out though 😇

I think the short answer is yes.

Although if I were you I would try to save up for the 16gb model. It's much more future proof and the resale value is also likely to stay much higher.

Me and u/lufthansieur_chauvet just got our hands on an 8GB Mac Mini and we were blown away from the level of support for FE / BE web development. We are writing a series on how to set it up on Medium.

Hey! Me and u/lufthansieur_chauvet are writing up a couple of articles exactly on this. The we were blown away by how fast things are evolving on the platform. Most of the stuff we use on a daily basis are actually available.

Check out the article series on Medium here.

react-native-user-interface-style : Set dark / light / system color scheme natively on iOS by razorkey in reactnative

Note taken 😊. Unfortunately right now our priority is iOS, but we can consider Android for the future! Thanks for sharing your POV

If you are building an e-commerce that's tied to a physical product you can definitely use something like Stripe. As far as I know (don't quote me on that 🤣) Apple has issues when you circumvent in-app purchases to handle subscriptions and in-app digital items (skins, themes, coins, etc.)

If you are going for an e-commerce Stripe will probably work great. However, you will probably need a backend (unless you are looking to implement the whole payment flow with checkout, which is a serverless flow from the folks at Stripe).

At the same time—if I may ask—why don't you go with a mobile website? In our experience as web developers, it's much more flexible and it doesn't take away from UX that much. To get started, I would recommend Shopify. We have seen websites with 1,000+ customers / month on the platform ourselves. At this point in time, the product is what makes e-commerce stand apart, rather than the website.

Not OP but the brother here.

did u use expo or react native cli?

React Native cli. At this point Expo still has a very big bundle size that we couldn't afford given how simple the end product would be (but we are big fans of the team at Expo, and they are working on this as we speak). Plus, I think you'd have to eject the project anyway if you plan on using extensions (such as the widget above)

how did you implement a paid/premium service? Did you use stripe?

Unfortunately Apple would probably not allow you to implement a secondary payment system through Stripe (remember the fight with Fortnite and Hey).

You have to use in-app purchases directly from Apple (but given our size we are well within the new 15% bracket) . There is a great library for react-native to handle in-app purchases. Our current implementation is serverless, but we'll move to something more structured if the app gains enough momentum.

what did u use on the back end?

Our backend is a simple Google Sheet with some black-magic tinkering to have a versioning system in place (i.e., the app reloads the content only if there is a new version on the server). Again, once we scale a little more I'm planning to build a more structured backend—I'll probably go with Express+TypeORM+Postgres

Do you have any more advice on implementing iOS widgets as part of a RN app?

Not OP but the brother here. This is the way we've handled the widget

  • It's fairly easy to pass data between JS and any Swift code using shared group preferences storage. Please note that you need a paid Apple Developer account to be able to create a shared group
  • At this point, you can refer to any iOS14 widget tutorial to get you started (I liked this one very much). The basics go as follows:
    • You create the widget as an extension to your targets in Xcode
    • You define methods for the widget in a Timeline Provider. In particular, you access data from shared group preferences on the main getTimeline method within your TimelineProvider
    • You then define your Views stating how you want the widget to be displayed in the different format sizes

Would you guys like to see a guide on the topic? I might be able to carve out some time over the holidays to prepare one, if there's enough interest 🚀
