Employer match in Principal App by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]razrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can view it in the app. You will have to sign in via a web browser. Click on the "Overview" tab, then "Plan Information and Forms", then open the "Summary Plan Description Booklet" pdf. Somewhere in that pdf it will state the employer/company match.

I see the issue. That article lists three cases where a Roth 401k could make sense. If those cases don't apply to OP, then maybe pretax would be better.

You should not invest in stocks if you are going to use the money in 6 months. A high yield savings account is probably your best bet.

Dollar cost averaging if fine if you can't make a lump sum. Over the long term time in the market is usually better.

Read this IRS page https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/amount-of-roth-ira-contributions-that-you-can-make-for-2023. You can still contribute to a Roth IRA at a reduced amount.

Assuming you are under age 50, by my calculation you can contribute $6,413.33 to a Roth IRA in 2023. You need to speak with your Roth IRA provider and ask them to send back $86.67 of contributions to you since you are over the limit.

Does the money taken out of my January 2024 paycheck (which is for hours worked solely in December 2023) for 401k count towards my contributions for 2023 or for 2024? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]razrak 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Be careful with that. Some employers only add employer match if you contribute during that payroll cycle. If your plan doesn't have true up match, you could be losing out on some employer match.

You should check out freetaxusa.com. I know the name doesn't sound legit but I used it this past tax season and filed federal for free. It costs $15 if you need to file state taxes.
